Not sure if this has been brought up b4....

Can anyone advise what mods I would need to have on my SII R33 GTST to equal the power of a stock R32 GTR...

Keeping in mind that I can only boost to 10 pounds as I have SII. Current mods include 3" Turbo back exhaust & Pod Filter...

Remember that the R32 GTR is the fastest out of the bunch !!

I really can't see how you'd do it only running 10psi.

I could be wrong here, but I'd say that you'd need to get upto around the 210-230 rwkw (maybe more) to out do a R32 GTR down the 1/4 mile.

Personally I would take a GTR over a modded GTS-T.... that being said I took a certain person on this forum to get their new toy today (modded GTS-T) and I think it would eat my GTR on a straight.... and possibly around the track :D

I woudln't say a lightly modded GTS-T would come that close to the performance of a GTR....

If its power that your after then yes its possibly. BUT its not EASY to get RELIABLE power. With more power you'll have to consider upping your brakes, clutch, injectors, ECU etc etc....

If its total package performance you're going to need more such as brakes and suspension.

I agree with you meggala, I love RWD and I personally prefer the look of a 33 and I couldn't afford a R33 GTR, although the R32 GTR has crossed my mind a couple of times in the past...

What sort of price would you be looking at to put in a RB26 (with & without labour) ??

gtst's with mods get my attention more.I personally would say mine has more pull than a lot of GTR's I've been in but 4wd gets the 1/4, especially with my suspension (hard as). It comes down to appeal and value and what you have planned for the future.

I disagree with some of the previously mentioned points.

I have found on a stock GTR and stock GTS-T they have similar fuel consumption and insurance costs (YES!).... many people who have recently insured their GTS-T's have paid around $3K or more... I'm 22 and have 20% NCB and have insured my GTR for not a lot more considering the value of the car is double so if i do write it off theres more risk....

Also a lot of people say ... I'd rather have a GTS-T for the RWD.... although this is valid GTR's are in RWD mode probably 90% of the time and the other 10% of the time if i were in a RWD I'd be wishing for an AWD.... basically the ATTESA system proportions power to the rear wheels unless taking a real hard corner or launching....

Panels and parts for a GTR are as expensive as a GTS-T (I am not talking about mods).

The only bad point is the expense of upgrading turbos etc. But MANY of the parts are stil similar.... most of the cheaper bolt ons are twice as much such as air intake, BOV's etc.... but booost controller, ECU, exhaust, all other electronics, intercooler, clutch etc etc etc are the same cost.

I'm not trying to argue with anyone but obviously you must have insured your car for a while now because in NSW suncorp no longer insure imports for a sane price.. GTS-T and GTR under my name were both over $10K... even though I have another car with them and still do.

I didn't say ALL parts.... just most.... as most bolt on's (and i did say CHEAPER kind of bolt ons) are not turbo related.

anyway this is MY opinion and I'm absolutely sure many people wil disagree :D

Anyway in regards to the oriugnal post... matching GTST power to GTR can be done yes.... although the GTR costs a lot more (often double in the beginning). If money ain't an issue then this is easy. However I think it is commonly accepted that after a certain threshold that GTR power building is easier and cheaper than GTS-T.

Look. It all depends on your goals.

It is easy and relatively cheap to modify a GTS-t to match the power of a stock GTR. I think everyone agrees with that.

The REAL question is how much do you have to mod a GTS-t to *KEEP UP WITH* a GTR?... You match the power, and you'll still get your ass beaten down by a stock GTR. You'll need to more than match the power of the GTR to keep up with it through the 1/4 mile. ATTESSA is a wonderful thing. So is traction.

The important question you should be asking in the GTS-t vs. GTR debate is "How far do you want to go with it?"

My answer is if you really want more than 300rwkw, I think you should be looking very seriously at a GTR. More than 300rwkw in a GTS-t will render it quite undriveable due to lag, and the ferocity that boost will hit. Also putting more than 300rwkw through 2 road tyres is a very VERY big ask.

Bascially, I think if you can afford a GTR and the accompanying modifications, buy one. If not, buy a GTS-t. Simple :shake:

GTSt Skylines are wild cars for the price, but once you get to a certain power level it gets terribly expensive to get more.

GTRs are SICK. The amount of extra power available with out even touching the original internals is amazing.My R33 made 345

rwkw on std internals @ ran 11.10 & 127mph! Of course it is a big

investment to buy one in the first place, but when you add up the cost of heavily modifying a GTSt the GTR makes more sense.

RWD is fun I agree, but its only a torque split controller away(or a fuse pull in the R32) and you are enjoying all the sideways action you want. I like driving real hard in the hills.Drifting out of a corner

and being able to keep it nailed as the attessa 4wd system pulls you around and into line is awsome stuff.I thought the R33 was amazing but the R34 is something else.It says in the magazines that the R34 is more chuckable.I didnt realise they were talking about the effect it has on the passengers though!

All Skylines are wicked - if you can afford one buy a GTR.

For a GTS25t (on street rubber) to match a stock GT-R over a standing 1/4 it takes plenty of power, & most importantly.... TRACTION!

To match (or better) a stock or slightly tweaked GT-R on the roll, it just takes lots of power :P

Dunno' about the twisty stuff? My money is on the GT-R, unless the GTS25t driver has power, grip, & ability!

Let me help shed some light on the subject.

I have just recently imported a '32 GTR, it is stock except for:

Full stainless exhaust including tuned-length front pipes

Tein HA Driving master kit

Impul ECU

I recently took her over to a friends place (R34 on these forums) for him to have a drive. R34's car is no slouch with over 300hp at the wheels on one of our low reading Perth dynos. He has:

Bigger Turbo

FMIC

AVC-R running 10psi I think

S-AFC

Whilst driving my car he was amazed at the levels of grip and commented on how impressive my basically stock GTR is. We then jumped in his R34 for a drive. His car definately has the top end power, but where he is sitting at the corner spinning the wheels my GTR is off in the distance.

So to get back to the topic it takes a fair bit of power for a GT-t or GTS25t to overcome the inherit lack of traction off the line when compared to a GTR.

A few of us Perth ppl are off to the drags this Sunday so we'll be able to post some times up for comparisons sake.

When My 32 GTS-T only just beat Andy's Dead Stock GTR I would have been making around 150rwkw.

Reason I'm estimating rwkw is that when it is tuned with the fuel pressure bleed and boost has dropped to 12psi it will make 156rwkw with the AF's Perfect.

BUT it has absolutly no kick or guts until 5000rpm because it leans out until then.

So I richened it up until it would pull below 5000rpm again, that is when I had a run with Andy's GTR.

So I wouldn't say it takes heaps of power to keep up with a stock GTR. Just a little.

I'm sure that I will have no show now that he has his exhaust.

I guess weight plays a big part.

It would be interesting to find out how much more power you actually need to be as quick as a car that is say 200kg's lighter.

I too have had a play vs. Andy's GT-R (sir GT-R on these boards) this was after he had the exhaust done, K&N pods, & extra boost.

Side by side, both in 3rd, he went first. By the time I'd changed into 4th I'd pulled away by a number of lengths. Off the line I'd have stuff all chance of staying with him, but I'd be able to reel him in.

    • Yeah, hard to find and a pain in the ass to change with the transverse engine. I’ve worked on a GTiR before and it’s not a job I’d ever want to do again. theres a company in South Africa that makes RS3 gearbox adaptors for the AWD SR20 including gearbox mounts, so I could modernise it and go a dual clutch with paddles. For now tho, it ticks all the boxes. Super cheap, can throw the kids and their junk in the back, and SR20 that I can turbo cheaply, a CVT that’s not a dog’s breakfast like the V35, and has 80% interchangeable parts with stuff I can source from the wreckers cheaply…. But it’s still unique. I love the wagon back of the Autech version. It’s cheap enough that I can buy another stock manual FWD Primera with SR20VE, swap the gearbox to the N15 pulsar short gear ratio box, swap out the brakes to the R32 ones I pulled off my 32, register it on club plates and take it racing. $1300 shipping from NZ. Heaps of parts and aftermarket builders for transverse SR20’s in NZ.
    • Hard to say, just pop the rocker covers off and have a look if you think it's cammed. You probably need to replace the valve cover gasket/half moons anyways.
    • From my youth: GTi-R clutch change is a massive pain. The gearboxes are fragile? But the car is super cool and I want one 😢 
    • Remember this is 1988 tech.
    • Driveline vibration is resolved. I ended up loosening all my engine mount and trans mount bolts, giving it a good shake then retightening everything and it's gone... Let's just say I was surprised that fixed it.  I've been happily driving it around again but unfortunately put zero time into my direct port/constant pressure WMI setup. I'm on vacation next week, so I'll try and finalize it then.  On a different note, I spent all week fuel/ignition mapping 2x 216L V16 engines. Turbo's were burning glycol and we swapped them out for larger units. We also had planned emissions testing on site, so I figured I'd be there the same week to use their instrumentation and massage any emissions issues out if needed. This was a first for me. Fuel management is similar in certain ways to automotive (i.e air density as load variable) but very different in others. It's all PLC based and AFR's are controlled by air and not fuel. They use a control valve between the turbo and air manifold to control pressure which in turn controls AFR's. Due to this, target AFR tables supplied by the OEM are in pressures and not mass which really through me off. They use air pressure vs fuel pressure tables. I also relied on an O2 concentration sensor the emissions team had in the exhaust. Ignition timing was also all over the place and we were losing a fair bit of power. They're now happily sitting at 16-40BTDC depending on load. We were making about 1600kw at 900rpm at 90% load. Engines were running a lot smoother as well.
