So one of my neighbours i hadn't seen in a while from up the street passed by my garage an hour ago today.

We started talking about my new car. I said, mate hope in, i'll take you for a quick ride around the block.

I'm going down lakeside blvd (Rowville). No sooner than i said to my mate "I'm just waiting to get pulled over and defected one of these days" I spot a marked SS. I started panicking and i pulled over, knowing very well that was the cop's intention.

To cut a long story short it was Pettet. He combed through the car and straight away had a look at the cooler piping. The piping went through a hole in the battery tray. He issued a defect notice.

As far as i know all i need is an engineers certificate. He said it doesn't need to be fixed just engineered.

Pettet has a bit of a reputation on these forums for being hard. I must say he was professional and friendly at all times. I was expecting him to be rude and unpleasant. He continued the search, gave me the defect and waited for me to take off.

I knew it was going to happen, it was a matter of time. At least i can get the problem fixed and not have to worry about it in the future.

So, if you have a cooler piping which goes through your battery tray, becareful!!

So what were the issues besides intercooler piping? only that?

Yer mate, that's it. The conversataion went along the lines of:

Me: "So officer, the only issue is the hole?, Once i have an eng cert it i'll be ok?"

Pettet: "Yes, everything else is ok"

he actually told you what you need to do ? jeez most cops dont do that.

it would be nice to see what commission he gets from this, cause he dont muck around

Yer, he was a pretty decent guy. Straight to the point but informative and factual. Whether my perfect driving record makes a difference, i don't know.

Basically said go to the vic roads website and find an engineer.

It was quite funny. He was combing over my car, me and my mate were looking over his SS. That thing looked friggin low!

Unfortunately he failed to mention (and he knows) that no engineer will touch/certify a car that has an airbag and with a hole through the engine bay for the intercooler pipe.

Do a search, the topic has been covered heaps of times.

Solution sounds simple but is far from.

Good luck; truly hope you prove me wrong.

I'm glad I live on the west side of town  I got pulled over the other night in the car park at the local supermarket (cop did a U bolt and followed me in there) I thought, here we go, I had done nothing wrong but knew I was gonna get pulled over. Parked the car and the t-bone parked next to me. I got out as did the copper and he gave me a bretho (2nd in 30 mins) and then went straight to the back tyres and gave them a feel and a once over, also ran his hand up the inside of the wheel arch. I said "don't worry not rubber up there, and brand new tyres too" he goes "Why new tyres? are you a car freak?" I laughed and said "no, I needed new ones as the old ones were about 5 years old and in need of replacing" he goes ok then tells me I have a tail light out as he is walking to back of the car. I don't know why I though this but I had this vision of him pulling out the maglite and busting my read light, but he just showed me I had water in one of my rears and said to get it fixed.

I went home, drilled a 1mm hole in the bottom of the light water drained out then I replaced the globe. Too easy :ermm: Cops aren't all that bad but some of them are just plain d!cks

Yeah that smashing the rear light thing is from a movie. Cant remember what one though lol. I have had all too many cops do u-turns coming after me. Park quick smart and run into the shops lol. I had one do a u-turn one time and a ducked into maccas and ran inside to order something and sat down. They parked behind my car, waited for 10 mins then reversed a little bit so i couldnt see them (but i still could) and waited there for 10mins. Then they parked and came straight up to me. Licence photo maybe? They said is that ur car, are you andrew blah blah. They cant do anything if your not in the car.

Is the hole going downwards through the top of the battery tray or into the side underneath it? I know they are both defectable but the one in the side is less noticeable..

    • Welcome to Skyline ownership. Yes, it is entirely possible parts websites get things wrong. There's a whole world of inaccuracies out there when it comes to R34 stuff (and probably 33 and 32). Lots of things that are 'just bolt on, entirely interchangable' aren't. Even between S1 and S2 R34's. Yes they have a GTT item supposedly being 296mm. This is incorrect. I would call whoever you got them from and return them and let them know the GTT actually uses 310mm rotors. Depending on where you got them from your experience and success will obviously vary.
    • Hi...a bit a "development" on the brakes. I spoke to the guys where i get brakes from...and they are saying that 296mm EBC are for R34 GT-T. I then went to their site: https://www.ebcbrakes.com/vehicle/uk-row/NISSAN/Skyline (R34)/ and search for my car(R34 GT 1998 - it has GTT brakes) and it show me this USR1229 number and they are rly 296mm rotors... So now iam rly confused... The rotors i have now on the car are 310mm asi shown... So where is the problem? Does the whole EBC got it wrong or my calipers are just...idk know what?
    • Oh What the hell, I used to get a "are you sure you want to reply, this thread is XX months old" message. Maybe a software update remove that. My bad.
    • This is a recipe for disaster* Note: Disaster is relative. The thing that often gets lost in threads like this is what is considered acceptable poke and compromise between what one person considers 'good' looks and what someone else does. The quoted specs would sit absurdly outside the guards with the spacers mentioned and need  REALLY thin tyres and a LOT of camber AND rolling the guards to fit. Some people love this. Some people consider this a ruined car. One thing is for certain though, rolling the guards is pretty much mandatory for any 'good' fitment (of either variety). It is often the difference between any fitment remotely close to the guards. "Not to mention the rears were like a mm from hitting the coilovers." I have a question though - This spec is VERY close to what I was planning to buy relative to the inboard suspension - I have an offset measuring tool on the way to confirm it. When you say "like a mm" do you mean literally 1mm? Or 2mm? Cause that's enough clearance for me in the rear :p I actually found the more limiting factor ISNT the coilover but the actual suspension arms. Did you take a look at how close those were?
    • @GTSBoy yeah sorry i know thery are known for colors bud those DBA are too in colors 🙂 Green will be good enough for me
