hey guys and girls,

next mission, intercooler time!! You may remember i posted a forum on the HDI Boost controller. I've installed it and it runs sweet. Got it running two settings, Low-10psi and High-12psi. With the new controller it holds boost and is so much better in the top end. The boost doesn't drop off much, probably a max of 0.7psi.

Anyways, next project is a front mount intercooler. time to part with the side mount!!

Yeh i've come across those on EBAY, pretty cheap :-) which is good. Did you have any troubles fitting it? and a noticeable difference?

No problems Fitting it Took awhile as i was by myself and 1st time to put it in!

Yer Noticed alot of difference much better flow and pull!

I have recently had a HDi GTspec intercooler fitted to my R34 and i've had no buyers remorse. I wanted a jap cooler kit but the exchange rate convinced me to go for an Aussie (read: china/aussie) brand.

The quality of the kit was superior to any other china cooler i've seen. The core is lightweight and welded up nicely, the piping was nicely made and it all fitted up without much difficulty... So i was told.

I can't comment on it's performance yet because i haven't had my car tuned to suit it's new turbo.

Thats great, thats the feedback i was after! I'm very keen to get the HDI KIT. They look like a great quality product!!

putting one on a stock turbo = waste of money + more police attention

As for the China intercoolers being as good as other brands;

They don't outflow them and one size fits all is not a good tuning philosophy. They also make them in a big hurry so alignment of internal cores is luck of the draw and the end tanks were have no association with the concept of design they are just made to look like they were.

I will take the pepsi challenge to show you how much faster and more responsive a car is with a correctly sized intercooler. It's not an insignificant thing.

I am also happy to tell you how to get the stock unit to work better for you. You can also look at the R34 SMIC which is good for upto 230rwkw or so with excellent efficiency.

However, plenty of people do it , it's cheap , better than stock if you put a big ass turbo on and like most you probably don't care that much about how fast your car 'actually is' as long as it goes ok.

the interesting thins is that over 10psi is fine. I've actually tested the pressure drop myself back in the day at 1bar.

So the over 10psi thing is an old wives tale with no factual basis. People reccomend things often because someone else did, they don't know why.

You can get a high 12 second pass out of the poxy r33 sidemount on the stock turbo running sensible boost. The FMIC won't get you any better times and hence doesn't help in this environment.

If you did some sort of circuit racing then the larger surface area of the FMIC will help with sustained boost loads, however doing this with a stock turbo is going to indicate you aren't serious enough to be serious.

SMIC and stock turbo ,the down side is the bling.

got my fmic installed by Tenagah last week and the brand they supplied was from a company in Malaga called DWRRACING. pretty good quality cooler and the company actually put some attention into making their kit, especially with the pipe which goes over the radiator, has been made to be as low as possible to clear the bonnet, tho you'll still need to cut your fan. actually made a big difference to the cars performance. getting the car on the dyno on friday to see how much power its producing after intercooler fitted.

12 psi is considered the safe limit for the stock turbos but it also varies; sometimes they will last 1BAR, sometimes they wont.

its all the same china stuff made in the same china factory

the monsta ones are really old ones they had for ages , the newer ones have a few minor changes to help fit

generally these kits all vary by quality of fit , ie how well the pipes and brackets are made . I have seen some with pipes easily a inch to short in length which means the cooler sits in a poor spot or not straight and takes more time to fit

also visually check the core if you can , many with bent/not straight top and bottom plates and poor welding of end tanks . wont cause any issues but looks crap

I would not recommend the stock IC at all , this is not an issue about surface are and cooling ability in limited time situations (drag/street) its about how restrictive the the stock one is . Tiny inlet/out let , tiny end tanks and severe bends are all very bad . just the boost in airflow movement by ditching it will give noticable performance increase when fitting a fmic

    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.
    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree.     • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
