Well....

As a few of you are aware on the past 26 months I have been building a stroked rb20 making it 2438cc. On the 10th of january this year it was all set to be put on the dyno and the run in tune done, 45 minutes into the tune 5psi dialed in second full pull to the limit of 6500rpm whole heap of oil smoke poured out of the breathers and a bad tick developed on the down rev.

We stopped the tune straight away and pulled the car off the dyno and took it back home and pulled the engine down to find 2 bearings and literaly destroyed themselfs...The Cause.... Still unknown..

Here I am now... Stuck with the choice... Should I spend $2000 to fix it and try again or should I part it off and cut my losses and just buy a 25 or 26 and be done with it and settle down?

Of course my minds leaning towards selling it all because it has been such a effort tracking down all the parts from Japan and the USA nad I dont know if I could do it again to repair it, I have spent the last 2 + years revolving around this build everything has been about it, and I always told myself if something went wrong that would be it I would stop there!

Tough times ahead with money etc. and having to purchase a house in the next 12 months are just clouding my head and I'm not sure what I should do, So I thought I would come on SAU where I have spent much of my time reading and askign questions to see what you would do if you were in the same boat?

If I did part out the engine I would be selling things like the following:

Ported rb20 Head

Tomei 272 9.25mm IN & EX

Tomei Lifters

Tomei Shims

Tomei Valve Springs

Then just drop in a RB26DETT and be done with it and be able to drive the car again.

But If I chose not to part it off and replace the damaged items and hope it didnt do it again would be able to be hopefully a reliable 350kw unique setup.

So what would you do?

If it were me and i had spent all that coin whats another 2k into the equation, i would chuck some new bearings in and double check all your clearances. I remember when i was building my clevo the block prep alone cost 2K (line hone, balance, bearing clearances etc) Build it then pull it down just to double check everything before winding 25psi into it.

hmm I have been thinking alot of this in the last few weeks... I do want to finish it it just plays on mine mind what caused it... the only thing we know of that was wrong was the timing belt tightened itself up to the point I couldnt twist it by hand I know this cause the camshaft to dig in but could it have caused the crank to twist that little bit to dig into the bearings... I just don't know..

I have been looking for a r33 GTR crank for a few weeks even looked at new items from Nissan who told me they would have to get one from Japan and couldnt give me a price until it got here... which sounded very unusual.

Keep the comments coming they are all helping me decide what path to go down.

The engine builder has been calling me a pussy all night for even considering abandoning the project this far into it...

    • Hi...so a "development" here aswell The swap is "done" and car went "test drive" BUT it seems the clutch(maybe gearbox?) is a little bit sad? I bought this clutch kit https://justjap.com/products/xtreme-heavy-duty-organic-clutch-flywheel-kit-nissan-skyline-r31-r32-r33-push-type "Problem" is that the first gear is hard to put into and it seems that the clutch is not disengaged. It was not the problem with the old clutch...(or like sometime the first gear would not get as easy specialy when the fluid was cold) So? Can it be like...bad "install" or is the clutch wrong ((it should not have been) i done research to get the right one) Or is this "normal" with new clutch and needs to be break in?

    • Hey everyone, Wanted to pick some brains about this issue I'm having with rebuilding my 33 rack (PN is 49001-19U05). All of the tutorials/videos I've seen online are either R34 or S Chassis racks which seem to be pretty straightforward to disassemble but this process doesnt carry over to my rack. Few of the key differences that I've noted The pinion shaft on the other racks bolt on with 3 torx bolts: Whereas my rack bolts on with 2 allen head bolts: These changes are pretty inconsequential but the main difference is how you pull the actual rack out of the housing. The other skyline/s chassis racks can be taken out by tapping the rack out of the body with a socket and it just slides right out. I'm unable to do that with my rack because there's a hard stop at the end that doesn't let the seal/shaft be tapped out. Can also see a difference in the other end of the rack where mine has a notch that looks like you're able to use a big wrench to unthread 2 halves of the rack whereas the other racks are just kinda set in with a punch. My rack: Other racks: TLDR; Wanted to know if anyone has rebuilt this specific model of steering rack for the R33 and if there were any steps to getting it done easier or if I should just give this to a professional to get done. Sorry if this post is a bit messy, first one I've done.
    • I would just put EBC back on the "I would not use their stuff" pile and move on.
