Car clubs banned from displays on grassed areas

BY GRAHAM DOWNIE

Canberra's 56 car clubs have been banned by the National Capital Authority from displays on grassed areas under the authority's control.

Coordinator of the Canberra Chapter of the Vintage Sport Car Club, John Phillips, said the decision, apparently taken in December, would significantly reduce tourism to Canberra.

He questioned why the Aboriginal tent embassy was permitted to occupy national land illegally when car clubs had been banned.

Acting chief executive of the authority Gary Rake said the NCA was placing conditions on approvals for events on national land to prevent damage to already stressed grass. Organisers were being encouraged to hold car shows on hard-surfaced areas such as car parks.

Mr Phillips said a rally in Canberra last year by vintage cars had brought about $550,000 into Canberra.

On March 22, about 1000 club cars would be displayed in Canberra.

''The north, east and west lawns [of Old Parliament House] are the only areas which can accommodate these numbers in Canberra.

''The alternative is to take the display to Queanbeyan or Goulburn, which the Canberra clubs would be loath to do.''

protest on a large grassed area involving as many ACT car clubs as possible?

It would seem wheels expo would already have considered this.

umm.. looks like the wheels event has been removed from the Shannons calender....

Good Idea - You would need a fair few cars to fill that Car Park

National Capital Authority

Treasury Building

King Edward Terrace

PARKES ACT 2600

Treasury Building Map

i reckon we could do it - 56 car clubs in the ACT. some people would bring their cars down on trailers, those trailers take up a lot of room

I'm liking this. I'm in!

Idiots. For all the money that comes into the local econ' from car shows small and large, and they scream "grass!". If it's an environmental thing, then FFS, turn off the bloody big fountain in times of drought, stop watering useless crap, turn lighting off on buildings that haven't been used in year, stop 'fixing' perfectly good roads(and missing the roads that actually need to be repaired...), geez, I could open this up.

Does anyone know how many car parking space there are at the NCA?

I think you'll find people noticed, they just realise they still have a fight on their hands for next year. From what I understand, this battle isn't over.

Nah, it's over. The minute the powers that be get some idea ion their heads, green or not, they'll hammer all of us into submission. Unless it goes to the High Court....(Reaches for DVD of The Castle)

Bet you the greens want to ban idling your car early in the morning on a very cold winters day....cause their bus doesnt have to do it, why should we...

LOL also notice my and CeJay's avi picture are in violation of the new rules ><

    • You very likely need to get it on a dyno and tune it. My assumption is, you've got an RB25DET tune in it, which has a different manifold, different injectors, and different cams as a minimum. What O2 sensor are you running?   When you say it runs extremely rich from idle all the way to redline, is this just free revving it you see that?
    • I seem to the be only person that is using a Haltech 2500 on an NA motor, I've installed a Bosch DBW throttle body to the OEM intake manifold and am having problems maintaining AFR even with the wideband o2.  It will run extremely rich at idle and up to redline, but under load it will go extremely lean in the 20s and i'm essentially having to rev it over 4k and feather the clutch to get it up to speed.  I've read a few other threads of about the butterfly, it seems removing the vacuum to it is supposed to have it remain open, i've noticed no difference under 4k with the vacuum line to it plugged.  I'm hoping someone here has had luck using the NA manifold with Haltech, and if they happen to have a tune for it.
    • I don't know any details, but I really wouldn't be surprised if they do it as a LHD only version, at least initially.
    • Thanks for the replies everyone. Definitely a coolant push. Oil catch can is empty and always has been. As the engine is out now I'll be having a good look over things. I do have some detonation on the piston tops from a trigger issue back about 5 years ago. I felt it and shut off then bought a new ecu and changed the trigger. Never been an issue since. It never hurt the power, its made almost 80hp more since that incident but I will pull the bearing caps to take a look. If the bearings are damaged I will do a bottom end refresh. Head is being re conditioned at the moment and the block will be cleaned and checked to ensure it's flat. I'll go with a kameari gasket and see how it ends up. The other thing I'm not super keen on is the cylinder colours. I suspect this is from the inlet manifold. The plan will be to put it back together, retune and then stick a plazmaman billet inlet on it and retune. I'm happy with the power, if it makes a little more, then great, but I would rather just make everything more efficient at this stage.
    • Maybe they'll look to do a bunch of presales to help inject some cash fast for their financial issues...
