Yea it happened really bad one night when the air was still pretty hot. I found a few FAQ's on how to insulate the coils, So i might give that a go and replace the spark plugs

How did you go with this?

Yeah you can fix the coils when they die, but often is easier to buy new ones

:) That probably depends on how baller you are I think, either way you have to pull everything apart to get at the coils - one way you have to remove all the coils from the bracket and put the new ones in (not to mention spending >NZ$1000 on the Splitfires) or you spent NZ$15 on some silicone and just give it a dowsing on the base of the coils while still in brackets

Is Silicone or araldite better for this application?

Lithium, could you see any crack or tell tale signs of arcing. Mine look ok...

I used silicone. I actually had ~19 old S2 coils lying around and filtered through all of them to find the ones that seemed to be visible in the best condition, no cracks - the epoxy and the boots etc all looked in pretty good condition. Took the car for a test thrash and it had a misfire, so got back and tidied/stretched the springs a bit and did the silicone thing - put them back in and took it for another drive and it was better than the car had been in ages!

The guys who had been observing were both major critics of trying it and were voting I just keep trying different coils, and thought I was taking the piss when I said it fixed the problem - had to actually experience it themselves!

I had this problem with the engine missing under load at higher RPM after increasing the boost on my R33 to 12psi. Everything pointed to coil packs and everyone said to replace them but I thought I'd try a $24 set of plugs instead (gapped to 0.8 instead of the factory 1.2) and that fixed the problem. Don't spend $600AUS on coil packs unless you are very sure you need them

gaping the plugs down does not fix the issue it simply masks it the issue will come back (smaller plug gap = easier spark). your coils should easily be able to run 1.1mm plug gaps at any power level the stock turbo is capable of producing.

im a %100 tight arse so what i did with the loom was make a new one up myself and just solder the wires straight to the coils.

then i just tape the coils up, the only problem i have with the tape is i find it needs to be done again every 15000ks or so, i need to silicone them when i pull them out next time.

    • It is a kunfine Android screen . Does anyone know the wirering diagram of the fuga ??
    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
