I recently returned from 3000 kms in my car. All the tanks were bp ultimate,

and I have the hks knock amp with display. No matter how I hammered

it, right up to 23psi, no knock..

on the way back home today @ goulburn couldn't see BP so went into a caltex and

got vortex. On the hume highway boosting in 5th gear, but only half max boost,

I got a knock reading. It was reproducible, so after that I limped the rest of

the way home being careful..

this is with a nismo ecu, not power-fc, ecu expects japanese 100 octane, and

retards with knock.

bp ultimate, it didn't knock even with intake temps at 45 degrees and 22 psi.

this wasn't a small servo. Could they be selling pulp as vortex 98?

The only time I've been forced to use Vortex 98 instead of V-Power or Ultimate was over Christmas south of Nowra (and my house got burgled whilst away). I was livid!!!!!!!!!

Bad Vortex at only ONE/1/UNO location? NOOOOO! Not on your sweet bippy!

Lower Blue Mtns Vortex 98 has offered bad fuel too!!!

OANA = Once And Never Again!!!!

It took me 3 weeks and 3 fills to get rid of the WRX burble-burble on cold temp.

Running with HKS F-Con Pro-V ECU and mild boost on BLITZ DSBC

On tha way back home from Nowra, I stay away from that Vortex sh/t. And C'tex has had a bad reput'n for bad fuel for some time eh?

I thought the missfiring was the coilpacks/ignition module for a while

Only trust 98 from BP or Shell

Aren't v-power and ultimate 98's anyways?

I prefer v-power, but seem to require petrol when caltex is up ahead.

to be hoenst i have not noticed anything different

ive tried them all....

even the 'V-power 2' offered in selected Shell servos...

which said it was 101 octane...

if I didn't get a tank of shite then it may depend on the tune,

if you were tuned for 98 and have a safety margin then, yeah, probably no diff.

But if you have less margin then it might. I don't know which is the case. I told my tuner

today and they said vortex: just say no.

I used Bp Ultimate exclusively, up until that fuel shortage.

that's when i used vortex for the first time. the car felt fine. pulled hard. no difference at all.

and because its slightly more convenient, and always cheaper, i just kept using it.

its been months, and i havent had an issue with it.

i guess it depends on the servo, in these cases.

but from all the reading ive done (which isnt really that much  ), ive found theres very little difference between the different brands of 98

well i heard otherwise........i heard a tuner say MOBILE SYNERGY is the best.......

anyhow ..i dont see it as a real big deal though....

has anyone here tried "V-power 2"???? or also may have been called "V-power Racing"

its rare as hen's teeths.......... ive only seen ONE ...SHELL station sell it in West Ryde..

although it was 100 or 101ron............i think it got phased out due to its High Cost........so they kept the standard V power...

I only run V-Power tried the V-power Racing and didn't find a difference, probably burns a bit cleaner i spose. Only time I have seen knock is when i had three other people in the car and knocked under load at full boost. :)

oh shit i forget to get petrol :)

yeah V Power Racing was phased out a while ago. The Vic club actually had a meeting with Shell to discuss it and try and keep it going. Turns out the money just wasn't there, even though the only people using it were the ones that would never get stingy about their fuel... kinda sux

I used to run vpower racing, LOVED IT! but it's gone now and it's tuned on 98... pings a little in third on a cold night on v power, so I think I'll try BP :)

Any idea why it would ping on a cold night, but not on a hot day? I'd imagine the opposite..

i have found the very same thing. BP and Mobil fuels were great, as soon as i chuck in vortex 98 the engine would knock its head off.

I just never use vortex anymore, it cannot handle running as hard as mobil and bp.

how does everyone notice/hear "engine knock" when driving ? How would you describe the sound ? I hear an occasional pop when downshifting but I'm pretty sure that's from the exhaust with excess fuel being burnt...

it'll rattle like a diesel and you can't miss the flashing check engine light. All 98s are the same this had been discussed and tested by many a sau punter and magazines galore. Apart from the odd bad batch of fuel they also all come from caltex which supplies it to your beloved bp, which slugs an extra 4c per litre more than others sell it for.

    • I would just put EBC back on the "I would not use their stuff" pile and move on.
    • Can I suggest you try EBC directly again and link them to as many competitor catalogues as you can to show their listing is incorrect, eg https://dba.com.au/product/front-4000-series-hd-brake-rotor-dba42304/ If you have access to an R33 GTST VIN and your VIN, you could also use a Nissan Parts lookup like Amayama to show them the part number is different between 33 GTST and 34 GTT which may get their attention
    • So i got reply from EBC and they just this site where you can clearly see those 296mm fronts on R34 GTT. I send them photos and "quotes" that 296mm are not for 34 GTT and they are too small. But it will be very hard to return them cuz nobody here knows 100% and they just copy those EBC catalogue :-D https://ebcbrakesdirect.com/automotive/nissan/skyline-r34
    • Hi, is the HKS  Tower Bar still available ? negotiable ? 🤔
    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
