Hey people,

Has your window switch stopped doing the double clicky thing? one click is meant to be for go down/up until you release your finger and the other you just push and goes all the way down/up? Then this tutorial may be able to help you! and it only costs $2.30 to FIX!

Tools:

Small flat heads

Possibly a pocket knife or small knife

Phillips head

Beer

Others:

Tarzan super glue

Cost:

$2.30 for the glue

I take no responsibilty if you glue your hands to your private parts/hair or superglue yourself to the table....

or if you damage your own switch.

Righto...

1. Open the car door....

2. In the handle of the door there is a little plastic cover down the bottem in the middle, remove it with a flat head and the screw underneath it.

3. Your ready to pull off the panel from the door. Try to pull the top end out first, be gentle but firm, then run your finger down the edge of it and pull out the back end.... BUT JUST LIFT IT A LITTLE,DONT PULL IT RIGHT OUT AS THE WIRES ARE STILL CONNECTED!

4. Disconnect the wires from the control switch by pushing really firmly in the middle of the plug (where the arrow is pointing) and then pull.

5. Undo the 4 bolts holding the switch unit to the panel.

post-36975-1235458195_thumb.jpg

Now you have your unit.

post-36975-1235458271_thumb.jpg

6. Undo the remaining 3 bolts on the bottom of the window switch unit which hold it together.Simply pull off the button to lock the passenger window, because you have to, to take off the top plastic (note where the button would be in the pic above).

post-36975-1235458372_thumb.jpg

Now you will see the circuit board and the top plastic, we are not interested in the circuit board.

post-36975-1235458581_thumb.jpg

7. To get off the driver's window button, use two tiny flatheads and slide them inbetween the button and the main plastic surrounding it(where the arrows indicate) and then slowly pry up.

post-36975-1235462201_thumb.jpg

8. When it pops off, you will first find there is this little springy item which is needed.... so now go find where it sprung off to... Also, I stretched the spring just a little to make the button extra tight...

post-36975-1235462324_thumb.jpg

9. Now checkout the underside of the button, you will have to remove all the grease under there because superglue does not stick to it, I did it by wrapping a tissue around one of the small flat heads.

post-36975-1235462480_thumb.jpg

10. Once all the grease is gone, you may notice a small crack, that is where the problem is being caused...

post-36975-1235462575_thumb.jpg

11. To fix, simply apply superglue to the cracks and wait to dry. I used a mixture of tissue and tarzan superglue because I wanted to glue the plastic back together and then reienforce it, so i tried to make a sort if mini paper-mache, which did work. But just be aware, dont put glue/tissues in the little partition, as that is for the greasy spring.

12. After it is all dry (I left mine for 10 mins) put the spring thing in the little hole with the white plastic facing out of the bottom of the button and then reassemble and put back into the car!

I hope this solved your problems as it did for mine, the switch is now much firmer and has two proper clicks. Even though it was a very minor thing, its the little things in life that count!

Adam

nice work adam.

will have to do this soon as my switch, when pushed auto down, doesnt like to flick back into neutral position and just keeps making a clicking noise trying to engage the motor.

thanx mate!

Mate, FANTASTIC DIY.

My window switch has been playing up for the last few weeks and has been getting progressively worse. I was thinking about buying a whole new switch, but decided to try your DIY and it worked wonders. Now it works like it just rolled off the factory floor.

Thanks again! Very happy!

Thanks for the tutorial, will be trying this today when I get home from work.

Also can someone please tell me the exactly how the drivers window button should function? eg- do you pull button up to wind down auto and push forward to raise window fully auto? As I have replaced the motor and mine is functioning like this!

Push down, the window should go down. Push even harder down and it should click, and it will go auto down.

Pull back, and the window should go up. Pull even harder up and it should click, and will go auto up.

Push down, the window should go down. Push even harder down and it should click, and it will go auto down.

Pull back, and the window should go up. Pull even harder up and it should click, and will go auto up.

Cheers for that, thats how I thought it should work. As Talbo said in another thread, the polarity must be wrong on my new motor. Which is weird as the plug only goes together one way.

All my window problems are sorted now! Thankyou for the guide and all the helpful people out there!

Hey, i gave this tutorial a shot today. I must have stuffed something up because after i put the switch back on (after gluing etc) and plugged it back in to test it, the window went down, so i pulled the switch to move it up. and its now stuck in the down position lol.

I then pulled the switch off again and got that little white piece and pressed it into that other white thing its sits in (with some force), and still nothing.

Is there a way to hardwire it to make the window go up, just for the timebeing incase it rains?

Fanastic write up mate, my power window switch wen putting down doesnt like to come back up to the position flush with the other button and just stays down i will definetly give this a go this weekend as it annoys the hell out of me, hopefully it will fix the clicky noise i tend to hear inside my door wen the window is down and the switch isnt at the flush position thanx again man great write up

Awesome.

Gives my button a more tight, precise feel and also eliminated the window going up and down by it self. The way this switch works is a slider. The slider literally has no resistance so if your switch is broken to the shit, your window will go up and down to the slightest bumps. Fixed it up and my window now works in accordance with the controls. No more being retarded.

Note on a series 2 skyline, the power amplifier for the window control is built into the switch system. You don't need to undo anything. Just take the switch box off the mounting bracket and grip the driver window switch between your thumb and index finger and yank it off, glue it, pop it back on after 10 mins. Might be a little hard to press the switch the first time but just jam it where its gotta go.

Don't pull out the passenger lock button, it wont go back in my pressing it in. I had to melt a pin in to lock the switch, clip the button in then remove the pin.

ok can someone help me, i did everything right put it back in and it was working sweet, then all of a sudden it goes back to how it was. i pulled it all out again streched the spring a bit and checked the cracks (no cracks) and now its still the same, except pulling up is a lot more stiff.

    • Have a vb in honour of the car comming back
    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.
