Nissan Trying To Discourage Aftermarket Wheels

My car is to be delivered to me in about 4 weeks I am told.

The manager at my dealership tells me that Nissan is instructing all Dealers not to provide the 'complimentary performance servicing' at the specified milage for anyone with aftermarket wheels, suspension or exhaust mods. I am not sure whether he means they will not perform the free service at all or they will perform it at a cost. He was informed of nissan's stance on this at the recent GT-R training/education session held in Melbourne for those dealerships involved in selling the cars .

I was planning on getting a set of 20" HRE comp 90's for the car, a genuine performance wheel which doesn't bust the scales.

Has anyone had this conversation with their dealer? Should I care about their 'performance servicing' schedule?

From the dealer:

I have reviewed the warranty notes that have been provided to me by Nissan Australia with respect to the fitment of aftermarket wheels or tyres. The document states that Nissan will not warrant a vehicle that is fitted with non standard GTR wheels and or tyres. Additionally the performance optimization services to be performed on the vehicle at 2,000 k’s, 12months, 24 months & 36 months which are paid for by Nissan Australia will be at your cost if the wheels are fitted.

Never heard of warranty going on tyres before!

Tell em to replace the tyres with GTR standard ones when they wear out under warranty and you'll be more than happy to keep em on.

Doesn't the GTR ECU record wheel changes? Or is it only launch control?

apparently the tyres are specially made by Bridgestone for the GTR tho Dunlop has made one for the GTR as seen in one of the Best Motoring video on the MCR R35.

Not sure where I read this so I'm unable to provide a link to support this claim...

But I remember reading that Nissan trialed many (hundreds IIRC) different tyres from many different companies to find the tyre best suited to the GTR (& it's aim to beat the Porsche 911 Turbo). For this reason and effects on vehicle performance they are perhaps more anal than ever on specific tyres and their relation to warranty protection.

What is perhaps more interesting though is that on GTR Blog some people achieved quicker lap times running 18" rims & rubber than the 20s. I can't find the exact article but it's from here http://www.gtrblog.com/

yes 18's with the better range of tyres available are well documented to track faster. They do look ridiculous on the street though. See one of the previous threads:

car's fine. nissan australia's just run by overzealous biggots with their heads stuck up their asses which still reeks of 1990. I don't think they fully grasp the concept of a multinational market.

no the car is not fine, if little things like this void warrenty and you have to have it inspected pre and post track days etc, etc, there must be some shortcomings with the engineering side of things.

yes, I am checking on warranty laws with the help of others. it seems silly to stop a set of genuine performace wheels being put on a car with the same dimension and tyres. Although cosmetic and maybe no where near as controversial/important as the other track pre/post dealer inspection concerns posted on the other thread, it will be a common scenario. myself or others involved will keep you all up to date

My dealer has kindly called to inform me that installing quality aftermerket wheels should not be a problem with either the warranty or the POS (unless they are dogs to balance!)

It's great news for everyone with an R35 on order, and for the future of GT-R modification in Australia !
