R32 GTR: Full on build anyway so it being reliable wasnt too much of a concern. That said, it copped a heap of abuse and only needed parts replaced due to the way it was being driven.

Jza80 tt supra: Stockish. Not a single thing to complain about. Just needs fluids, fuel and tyres. Lots of rear tyres to be precise.

2000 Berlina: Ive put about 150k on it, its been T boned, ran over a person (not my fault. lesson to the drunk, dont play dodgem with cars in wet dark conditions, losing hurts your knees), killed a wallaby via the front left on an interstate drive, ran into a larger kangaroo via the front right on a different interstate drive (middle of nowhere south west queensland). I use it to move parts and rims around, also for towing. The ONLY thing it needs is fluids. Its never had any issue even after all that sh!t. 3 days ago one of the brake light bulbs died so that needs replacing.

I think the more important thing to consider is, buying a great condition car (or new) so you know there's nothing wrong to begin with. My cars get treated well (i treat the holden well,the world seems to want to hurt it though) and always serviced correctly. I drive the supra and holden interstate at least once a month, with 100% trust that ill get to where im going and come back without incident. The GTR went to Victoria and back 2 months ago, no dramas either (lots of fuel used. damn 1000cc injectors)

So yeah, dont buy a lemon

Just wanted to check that you are aware of the concept that you're supposed to drive around traffic hazards and not through them...

well put it this way dude.......my opinion...those are most likely Ocker, Bogan, Redneck, inbred, narrowminded hillbilly v8 lovers for you....

ask any mechanic....

they will all tell you Toyotas are one of the most reliable cars ever built... they are renowed for it.

in my opinion...holdens are shit..... so are fords...

not because i dont prefer the cars...its what i hear and see from the quality of the cars.

a mate of mine had the VY Clusport R8.... from brand new...to 3 year period he had it...he went to the dealer 7 times! for numerous faults under warranty.

another friend of mine has a VE V6 UTE... brand spanker... he turned the ignition and couldnt get the key in...

called holden road side assistance... the mechanic bashed a screw driver in and told him to head straight to holden otherwise he wont be able to turn it on again & get the ignition barrel replaced under warranty... like wtf is that for a new car.

i know this can happen to any car manufacturer...but like i said..... jap cars are renowned for reliablility...even more reliable than euro cars... toyotas especially.

I recall knowing someone who bought a 550,00km hilux...that hasnt been serviced for donkeys years...it was petrol ...but the oil came out black like black tar/gunk...the previous owner never rememberd when he changed oil..... it still was running strong.

never had problem with nissan... previously the toyota supra i owned for 4 years... not 1 thing went wrong with it..

Number one car to call out to fix is Holden, things like the key in the ignition will not start, electrical faults with the central locking and alarm system.

To be fair, I would think they would be the cars with the hugest numbers on the roads, so if the biggest call outs werent for Holden and Ford I would be a bit worried. Just for the record I have a Commodore and its central locking plays up all the time :)

More of the same car out on the roads the more chance of those cars playing up I guess.

Mechanically, the most reliable Commodore was the one with the Nissan engine...

I drive a VZ wagon for work, and would not buy one - it seems that for every service there are non-trivial warranty issues to attend to.

Now I know that every car has it's quirks; but a new heater box after 5000km? A gearbox that won't stay in gear (well it does now, but not due to human intervention)? A radio that turns off randomly when the key is removed? Torn/broken trim after 30,000km? Air-conditioner fan switch failing after 30,000km?

I'd shoot someone if my Nissans did that!

(Although my '73Z has been fully rebuilt, and would rival the cost of a new VXR, things like fan switches and gearboxes don't fail - heck, it's only just shat the heater core after 36 years...)

Even modified, a car can be just as reliable as factory stock - and sometimes more so.

However, it can also be an unreliable pig, that is forever breaking parts - I'd consider that to be the point of having 'gone too far' with the modifications!

are they reliable? the short answer is standard = yes. modified = no.

only thing that has broken in my r33 is my gearbox, and thats after i modified it (the car)

I've noticed all my mates with E series Falcons having never ending hassles with the cooling systems, autos and electrics.

My dad had an SLR5000 when we were kids. We spent many hours tinkering with her, they were memorable times. I dont recall them having any major issues, but then again, old classics are easy to work with.

It's ashame he sold it for a Volvo wagon as that car would make him a very rich man these days.

I think these days they do, although 5 or 10 years ago I think it was a different story. I dont see too many older Toyota's compared with the older Falcons and Commodores.

    • Hi guys my 94 r33 gtst fuel pump has gone out. I have a walbro 525 ready to go in but am unsure if I need to upgrade the fuel tank bulk heads? Ive heard that others have issues with the stock wiring melting...     • It’s new. It’s the cd009. I did take the transmission apart to mill down the bellhousing and had both housings come off the gears so wondering is something isn’t in right. I am running redline. I can get it in gear running too but it’s just not easier and it’s almost like 2, 4, 6, and reverse all the back gears aren’t happy going in

    • Got keys and did a walk around the yard planning the landscaping works with the family that I will be doing Main effort: remove all the woodchip in the gardens that are around (attached) to the outside of the house and replace with 10mm blue metal, having woodchip close to the house is a recipe for inviting white ants, currently there are no white ants within the block and I would like to keep it that way I'll be buying some large raised garden beds to grow veggies and stuff, and the woodchip will be mulched with everything else that gets dug up, pulled out, or cut down during works Next will some minor drainage and landscaping maintenance up one side of the house, where the fuse box, AC, and solar stuff will go, about 12 mtrs long by 2 meters wide, I'll break up the soil, add gypsum and then I'll dig in a French drains about 300mm deep x 300mm wide and fill it with agg pipe and blue metal, then level out the whole area with a 50mm layer of blue metal, the soil, whilst currently pretty compacted, will break up well with the gypsum to aid in drainage, I'll then cover the area with a 50mm layer of more blue metal In saying this, the drainage issue is minor, but that little hidden away area down the side is untidy and weedy, and as all of the main elec stuff is there I want it neat and tidy to appease my OCD Again, the material excavated from the French drains with be added to the garden bed mulch, as will some rose bushes and some other crap looking garden plants, and a old apricot tree that is looking worse for wear The apricot tree is currently in a little roundish garden bed that is in the middle of the back yard with few other crappy looking plants around it, that will all be removed, levelled, re-turfed, and is a perfect spot for a hills hoist There is also a area about 3m x 2m between the rear fence and shed that will get some attention, it looks like some stuff was stored there and the grass is dead, that will also get broken up and mulched, and is a prime spot for a pumpkin patch I've guestimated that I'll need: 3 tonnes of blue metal, 12 meters of agg pipe, 5kg of Gypsum, and a hills hoist, so a few bags of concrete as well to set it in place (the house currently has one of those pull out 4 line jobs, whilst it works, I want a retro old school hills hoist), I am also going to run some chickens, there's a great spot for a coop, so a chicken coop to suit 4 of those lovely egg laying bitches will also be on the job card That should keep me busy for a while, and will finish off the back yard ready for a early spring planting of some veggies and berries  Once the main effort is done I'll start out the front, there's a large rock garden that could use some TLC, but that is only minor works Should be fully moved in within 2 weeks, the landscaping works will start then Fun times, retirement is good  
    • It happens, that's what your single stage filler is used for.  If it is still visible after the 3 coats of 2k primer, it will be visible after the paint is laid down.  Its hard to give 100% perfect advice without being there in person, I'm very tempted to say stop where you are, fill your pin holes with a single stage putty first then keep going.
