hey guys first post here,

im just thinking about importing a 350GT 2003-05 model, premium package one. iv been looking around on http://www.tradecarview.com they have FOB price, im just wondering what FOB price is, also does the customs 1 year wait apply for these cars that are allowed (on sevs/raws list - 350GT is allowed) or can i just buy and ship and rego it and drive whenever i want?

say if i do buy one for $15000 AUD FOB how do i calculate the 10% GST and Customs?

has anyone imported a 350GT before that could contact me and give me some help?

does anyone know a broker that would take care of everything (paper work, inspection, importing) and just charge a commision for there time and effort?

Hi,

In brief the FOB price is the price of the car itself, plus the various costs involved in getting the car out of the country, such as transportation to the port, Japan-sode customs costs and actually a whole lot of other stuff. With the FOB price essentially everything in Japan should be taken care of.

The one year wait that you might be referring to is in regards to Personal Imports where you live overseas for a year and then want to bring your car home with you. In the case of a 350GT you don't have to wait to bring one in, you can do so straight away. There are some things you need to do first since it's a RAWS vehicle, but it's all pretty routine and nothing to worry about.

If you buy a car at $15,000 FOB a very rough breakdown of costs would be:

Shipping including customs clearance and a couple of other costs: $2,200

Import duty: $1,500

GST: $1,800

Compliance: $2,000 - $2,800 depending who

Plus new tyres, registration, and an import broker fee if you use one, which I recommend (bias disclaimer: I am one! :D ).

EDIT: actually I just saw your email you sent earlier, so I'll also reply to that with answers to those questions :(

As said by Blipman ....

car at $15,000 FOB,

very rough breakdown of costs would be:

Shipping including customs clearance and a couple of other costs: $2,200

Import duty: $1,500

GST: $1,800

Compliance: $2,000 - $2,800

....found a one at $11,800 AUD FOB, which would be totaling 20k - ready to rego and drive. - that's one day of quick searching around.

Hang on, so you've been given a price of, at very best, $22500 landed and complied, (Blipman didn't actually say that by the way, he used the figures you gave and gave you the extra costs) and you think you can crunch it down to $17-19K because you happen to have seen a cheap V35 on Trade Carview?

Please read here first, and remember to search next time:

For the love of Tsuchiya, please use a broker to get you a car from Japan, or the next thread you make will probably go into detail about your money disappearing in Japan, or the car you got sent wasn't the car in the pics, or the car got rejected in compliance.

hmm thanks, if not that site which site should i use? - i will be planing on using a broker, iv been contacting some just for help (waiting for replies) - i did find a v35 which i quite like though due to your info i don't know anymore about it

its this one here....http://www.tradecarview.com/used_car/japan_car/nissan/skyline+coupe/1499366/

any thoughts? -

is it possible for a broker to find me one like that for the same FOB price and a good grade? - with the sunroof/reverse camera/guessing it its a premium pack with the half half leather suede and nav/tv.

I'll bet my left testicle that the car doesn't exist, if it did it sure as hell wouldn't be sold at that price. I'll send them an email, just for a laugh, and see what they say. Given the auction photos are the only pics on there, it was probably coming up at auction a few weeks ago, and the company "selling" it was trying to get a bid for it from someone before it went through...in other words, using cars at auction as their "stock", rather than spending the money to buy their own cars.

That car wouldn't go for any less than 1 million car cost, probably closer to 1.2 mil. Then add 100,000 for your FOB on top of that.

I'll let you know if and when I get a reply to my enquiry :)

yeah k thanks mate ill be waiting, i sent them an email asking for more pics and info on the car as well, i guess ill just wait for them to reply. What site should i use to find the similar car if that site there isn't a trustworthy one?

just a quick question, who does the compliance bit? an actual mechanic or the RTA ?

also does the gas for a/c in the car get put out before it gets shipped and need to be refilled when in gets back in Australia, if so then anyone have an idea how much it would cost for refill - would import broker ad that into the cost of compliance or is it a whole new cost like new tyres?

You have to organise compliance. It can only be done by a RAW. Search for one here:

http://raws.dotars.gov.au/rawswebpublic/RAWPubSearch.asp

I believe your aircon gas can stay in the car. If its empty, your local aircon bloke can refill it for $70 - $100.

As suggested, sign up with a broker (e.g., iron chef) and let them help you find a car. They have paid for access to the systems showing all cars coming up at auction. By the sounds of things you are new to the game and would be crazy to import without one.

p.s. The FOB price of V35s has been dropping. Seen a couple manual examples getting very very close to a flat 1 million.

I'm gonna go look up some private sales tomorrow for the 350gt just to see if i can get one without the hassle of importing, but if there no good then ill just go around and calling/visiting some brokers for help and what not.

BTW still waiting for a reply for that car. apparently the company selling it isn't open on sat and sun so ill have to wait till Monday for a reply.

Just want to ask, what does the compliance actually consist of on a V35 350gt coupe any1 have a run down on it? - say grade 4-4.5 ( does it make a diff on the grade at all or what) - just a through run down in compliance would be awesome if possible?

thanks guys.

compliance on a V35

full service, child restraints, immobiliser, revert to standard if modified (buy a stock one its a LOT easier to work with) . then its my turn if you sned it to a shop I do work for: fix radio, sort out navi, add Ipod and various accessories.

from there its yours to drive to the local rego authorities.

kristian can probably add to this, this is what I see done to them with the compliance shops I service.

in short DON'T buy a SHITBOX! it will come back and bite you.

I'm impressed you even tried. You did notice that it was listed on Trade Carview 7 months ago, right? Trade Carview is a joke, the ONE thing it's good at it seems is being known by everyone. It's useless for buying cars and every dealer I know who lists cars on their says it's not worth it. However you have to have a minimum one year contract... the only people who actually seem to do well out of it are Trade Carview themselves, certainly not the users.

    • Hope you aren't too sore after that one, might take a day or 2 to notice yet and I guess it is a loooooong drive home. On the bright side, tube frame front end is a thing at superlap, right?

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same. There are plenty of discussions on here about this issue from al the many years of people wanting a cheap/accessible option. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/ https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/
