hey guys,

got (read: stole) this idea from another forum.

fess up to any funny or tragic accidents that you have had while working on your car. (pls dont expect sympathy :/ )

i'll kick it off.

i pulled the coil lead out of my mx83 cressy while it was running cos i was curious about how quickly the motor would stop LOL

got a decent zap and black marks on my fingers... and yes it stopped quite quickly

Came home super late one night, had 4 cars already in the driveway. Didn't want to park the GTR in the street.

So sneaked inside (Mum was sleeping), got her keys, tried rolling the Corolla down the drive without turning on the engine by just letting down the handbrake... once the car slowly started rolling, I tried pressing the brake but it didn't work as the engine wasn't on. Ripped up the handbrake but was too late. Corolla ran into the front of my old Familia! Luckily only a dented number plate but f**k did it make a loud bang when it hit!!

My mate removed the gearbox from his dad's Falcon while it was up on ramps. Handbrake wasn't on. Falcon rolled onto mates head. Mate felt head crumbling and tore it out before it was crushed. 42 stitches in head. Lots of blood. Hair now grows in odd patterns. Mate was unhappy. Laughs had by all except mate.

lol reminds me of doing a similar thing in my 1963 EJ at 5am, i didnt want to wake anyone, so tried ot roll it, and i did into a wall LOL i had my head out the window to see how close i was getting, and i scored a nice bruise on side of my head after it hit the B pillar when i rolled into the wall.

sheet PhilKenSebben , that is harsh, hope the scars are in a stylish pattern

Was replacing the rotors on the skyline spent 45mins trying to figure out why the new rotor wasnt just sliding into place finally realised i was trying to put the rear rotor on the front hub lol  lol only took 5mins after that lol

:-Fell down the pit and bruised a couple ribs and breaking the LED head light my missus just bought me for x-mas.

:-Pulled the gearbox out of the car had undone every thing except for the clutch line, didn't realise until i slipped the box back and then tried to put it down only to realise i couldn't. So then i was left with the gearbox resting n my right shoulder while trying to undo the line with my right hand. Lucky the 10mm spanner was within reach.

:-There are plenty more to come as well

Nope, and I'll get you a photo if I can get him to shave his head again. Shouldn't be too hard, a night of drinking normally does it. The hair only looks weird when it's really short but there are some VERY impressive scars dwelling beneath. Then again the same dickhead went to hospital after falling off a car roof at 110km/h mainly because he failed to tell the driver he was climbing out to do it so by the next time I see him he'll probably have a few more scars to prove his stupidity.

last saturday finished the turbo install

was sore etc, and my hip flexor was popping in and out

a massive week of uncomfort later and it seems Ive pushed the hip bone onto the sciatic nerve

OUCH

havent been able to sit down for a week&half now

LOL at crushed head

i didn't put the socket on a air impact gun properly and it flew off and missed 4 cars and into my mates head! how it hit him when he was inside a car with the window down and 4 cars in the way is beyond me!

LOL ouch!

when i was about 16,i was pulling out the engine from my old wrecked datto 1200 sedan (to put into my 1600 shell) over the pit in my parents garage.was down the pit loosening things and basically cutting the front rails out the car with an angle grinder to get the engine out(chassis was farked anyway) used the grinder while in the pit for about 10minutes,got out for a break and fresh air, started up the grinder again(this time i was above the pit) and KABOOM!sparks ignited the oily sand in the bottom of pit and instantly ingulfed the car.i managed to lean in the window of the car and drop the handbrake and push the car back about a metre so that the tank wasnt directly over the flames.got out of the shed with thick black smoke billowing out the door, mum rang the fire brigade while the next door neighbour hosed down the shed roof from their backyard over the fence.got taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and i reckon by the time i got home from the hospital, the fire brigade was done and my olds had a cement mixer back up into the shed and filled in the pit with concrete

can laugh about it now,was a close shave, but definately wasnt funny at the time.safety first these days in my shed...

:D ,.................................. .................................... :/

was fitting a spare R200 to a mates SR20de Silvia, Had the front of the diff sitting on the sway bar and the rear diff bolts just sitting in the cradle. My mate bumped the car and the diff fell out of the cradle on to my head which was resting on the concrete floor. Lets just say that it hurt a bit, and the EGG come up before i got out from under the car (have a photo some where).

Can we include on the farm stories, my brother and i grew up in the country and i have so many stories from the farm.

I split my head open above my right eye when the pliers I was using to re-install brake shoe springs (Holden HT Kingy) slipped of off the spring.... only 5 stitches required!!

Another (I can laugh about it now) was when I had a flat battery in my Subaru Wagon. I was pushing the car out of the driveway so that I could get my Torana onto it to jump start, so I had the drivers door open so I could push backwards and steer at the same time.... all of a sudden the car doesn't want to go nowhere because the open door glass had caught itself on the carport. Of course those old subie's had frameless windows, so when I forced the car not realising that it had caught on the carport the window popped into a billion pieces!!!

I've been tinkering with cars and bikes for 20 years ... where do I start?

A mate of mine (who was a small engine mechanic) and myself worked on a ride on lawnmower. Ripped the engine down and bored it out and fitted another block, crank and pistons from whatever we found to fit. Turned out to have prob double the horses and quite a bit of torque. We had it in his shed at like midnight popping wheelies with it. Giggles all round, until his old man had a go, flipped it right back and cracked his skull on the cement floor. Out cold. We shat ourselves! Later sold the ride on lawnmower to some guy who raced them! It was too fast and couldn't take corners.

Another one was at a mate's property out bush near Swan Reach. Had a massive shed with a caravan inside and an old car body (can't remember model now). It was raining outside and we were repairing some of the dirtbikes we stacked up during the day. We were cold, so we started a bon fire in this car body in the shed (it was a big shed I tell you). Well the car never really had all its fuel drained, so after a while we hear a loud "Whoosh" and a massive "pop" ... never ran for the garden hose as quick as we did in our lives :/

Its a miracle we're still here after some of the shit we did.

Putting a bosch 910 and new fuel filter in my old calais, fuel gushed out of the old fuel filter, and into my eye, i jumped up so quickly from the shock of fuel burning my eye, i smashed my head on the towbar 'brace thing' and almost K.O'd myself lool, working on cars late at night trying to get things done quickly always fails

Hmm, the amount of times I had to kick the door to alert my (ex)wife to open it, because I'm using my hands to stop myself bleeding to death, is numerous. I'm surprised I've still got a right thumb after the amount of times an angle grinder has almost taken it off. I have pretty good reflexes, but its not good sometimes when you drop a running grinder and your reflex action is to catch it! Scars all over it and it 'clicks' now :P

My mate burnt himself good and proper when I welded up a top mount manifold for my CA18DET with steampipe bends. I went to remove it from the jig (with welding gloves!) and my mate decided to grab it too to help. Boy did he cry like a little girl.

    • Yeah, that's fine**. But the numbers you came up with are just wrong. Try it for yourself. Put in any voltage from the possible range and see what result you get. You get nonsense. ** When I say "fine", I mean, it's still shit. The very simple linear formula (slope & intercept) is shit for a sensor with a non-linear response. This is the curve, from your data above. Look at the CURVE! It's only really linear between about 30 and 90 °C. And if you used only that range to define a curve, it would be great. But you would go more and more wrong as you went to higher temps. And that is why the slope & intercept found when you use 50 and 150 as the end points is so bad halfway between those points. The real curve is a long way below the linear curve which just zips straight between the end points, like this one. You could probably use the same slope and a lower intercept, to move that straight line down, and spread the error out. But you would 5-10°C off in a lot of places. You'd need to say what temperature range you really wanted to be most right - say, 100 to 130, and plop the line closest to teh real curve in that region, which would make it quite wrong down at the lower temperatures. Let me just say that HPTuners are not being realistic in only allowing for a simple linear curve.
    • I feel I should re-iterate. The above picture is the only option available in the software and the blurb from HP Tuners I quoted earlier is the only way to add data to it and that's the description they offer as to how to figure it out. The only fields available is the blank box after (Input/ ) and the box right before = Output. Those are the only numbers that can be entered.
    • No, your formula is arse backwards. Mine is totally different to yours, and is the one I said was bang on at 50 and 150. I'll put your data into Excel (actually it already is, chart it and fit a linear fit to it, aiming to make it evenly wrong across the whole span. But not now. Other things to do first.
    • God damnit. The only option I actually have in the software is the one that is screenshotted. I am glad that I at least got it right... for those two points. Would it actually change anything if I chose/used 80C and 120C as the two points instead? My brain wants to imagine the formula put into HPtuners would be the same equation, otherwise none of this makes sense to me, unless: 1) The formula you put into VCM Scanner/HPTuners is always linear 2) The two points/input pairs are only arbitrary to choose (as the documentation implies) IF the actual scaling of the sensor is linear. then 3) If the scaling is not linear, the two points you choose matter a great deal, because the formula will draw a line between those two points only.
    • Nah, that is hella wrong. If I do a simple linear between 150°C (0.407v) and 50°C (2.98v) I get the formula Temperature = -38.8651*voltage + 165.8181 It is perfectly correct at 50 and 150, but it is as much as 20° out in the region of 110°C, because the actual data is significantly non-linear there. It is no more than 4° out down at the lowest temperatures, but is is seriously shit almost everywhere. I cannot believe that the instruction is to do a 2 point linear fit. I would say the method I used previously would have to be better.
