Hi Guys,

Just installed my series 1 rb25det last night, and wired it up, little bit of a background this engine was bought low k's from an importer wrecker and was auto its whole life, and hasn't been run for a long time I'm assuming.

I've done every seal on the front end, as well as a gates timing belt, tensioner / idler bearing, and done rear main seal etc, had a forward facing plenum custom made and is securely fitted with gasket / sealant of course so no leaks there...

Injectors are stock rb25 injectors, I've only been able to put in around 1.5 litres of oil to see if it would run briefly, but when started it makes this tapping noise coming from the head...

I've looked at a few threads and think it could be a build up of air in the hydraulic lifters?

Or could this be to do with me changing the timing belt and maybe the crank pulley is flopping around? doubtful though as its secure.

It's really got me worried and countless hours have gone into this so hoping it's not the worst...

Video of sound -

Also the ecu that was sold with the engine is buggered and wont ground to earth for the fuel pump to switch off, so I'm running my mates remapped rb20 ecu to suit rb25, which I was going to do anyway but still very frustrating.

Found this sound on youtube and seems pretty much exactly the same... any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

That's the way I read it too, thinking WTF?? Be interesting to have that clarified - I'm hoping his countless hours haven't been wasted by putting a thimble full of oil into the sump when it was going to need 4-5 litres?.

Without all the plumbing hooked up the vid seemed to show a lot of noise coming from the inlet side (valves opening and closing), compressor inlet, and exhaust. Bit hard to listen for lifter noise over all that, but you'd nearly have to expect a bit of bleed-out if it has been sitting for some time. Then again, if it's got no/low oil pressure the noise might be something else.

Wasn't a good idea to run with 1.5 - 2 litres in the engine, just wanted to see if it started and only ran it for 30 seconds if that... which u can see in the vid.

Tapping was just because it had been sitting around for a long time, and the head was dry, maybe a bit of air in the hydraulic lifters too...

Dumped what was in there and filled her up tonight, no tapping, sounds brilliant.

So you actually did start it with only 1.5L in it??????? It doesn't matter how long you did or did not run it for. Not enough oil can turd your motor instantly. Wow, that's amazing. You'll be lucky if you didn't trash the motor. I can't see your video since it's blocked from work BTW, but I'm sure as hell going to look at it now when I get home.

This has to be one of the most retarded things I've ever heard of, and you actually posted up a "help me" thread about it?? Priceless :laughing-smiley-014:

Err there must have been more in there before putting in the 1.5 litres, as oil had been lifted to the head...

Highly doubt it would have caused any damage, as it did have some in it, before I put the 1.5 in, definitely enough for the oil pick up to catch.

How can you say that before the engine gets hot that there will be huge amounts of heat and friction, yeah silly I know this but figured it would be safeish to run for a short period of time, very short obviously.

I posted this thread to find out if it was typical of an rb25 to have top end noise when it hasn't been run for quite some time, not to get flamed, or have sarcastic / pessimistic replies, guess I can expect that from some on SAU.

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
