Hey everyone,

I just bought a voltmeter, but the instructions that came with it are incredibly vague, i think the only actual words it has on it are "Voltmeter" and "OPENING CEREMONY" lol.

So does anyone know how to wire the red and yellow cables to an ignition switch, or fuse? I imagine tapping the fuse box would be easier, but im not sure how to do it?

A brand name, model and pic of the wiring will help.

I've installed a few of these and they are all different.

Ok, its just a cheap brand, Dragon Gauge. Couldnt tell you what model lol, unless you are talking about my car?

Depends on where you site the gauge, but the best place to wire it into is the ignition harness under the steering column knee panel.

If you have a multimeter or volt tester you can find the wire when you switch the ignition on.

You'll obviously need to extend the wiring to reach your desired tap point but there are usually 7 day auto shops open who will have what you need to successfully perform your task.

That's what i think too. You could try and hook it up to your parker lights, it should dim the gauges at night cause it might be too bright.

Im not sure about the whole ignition harness.... but ive wired all my extra things to my ecu. This is because ive hooked up a Apexi Rsm previously so i knew where all the wires were down there.

Basically all you need is to find the ign wire. It will most likely be red. You can get this from the ECU or have a look under ur dash. When you find a red wire that may be a ign wire. Cut it and use a volt meter to test if it has power. If it does, wire it in. Then look for a ground wire.. should be black and wire that in. THe last wire: being yellow, look for ur parker wires... im not sure about this one as all my equipment has auto dimming built in... but a bit of trial and error wouldnt hurt.. or someone on here will be able to let u know.

May i ask why u wish to install a voltmeter? Many devices like RSM, SAFC as well as some turbo timers do tell you the Volts... as well as other features.

Anyway, all my wiring have been done to the wires behind the ashtray underneath the Stereo, you should have access there to all the +12V, GND and Illumination wiring for the cigarette lighter. Splice the wires and solder is best, but you can buy connectors that simply pierce the wire without the need for cutting.

Drop the knee panel under the steering column and it'll be there. It runs down from the center of the steering column, and if you have an immobiliser installed, you'll notice a heap of black wires taped up into this harness.

A word of warning - If you want to start tapping into the ECU harness without knowing exactly what wire does what, you could end up paying for it. Some of the pinouts on the ECU are very sensitive and being a self confessed noob, I wouldn't put any money on you pulling the job off. Another point to consider here is that if you load up too many things on the ECU harness, you could end up frying something or constantly blowing fuses and you'll begin to wonder why. The advice is good as long as you know what you're doing. I've seen some bodgy work in this area due to turbo timers, and even aftermarket cruise controls, just be bloody careful.

Behind the center console is a good spot if you are going to be installing the gauge near there, but the same rule applies with overloading the circuit. Another point with the cigarette lighter circuit is that it initiates on ACC, which means that the gauge will be powered up when you're parked somewhere listening to music or whatever. I once had a member come to me trying to figure out why he was constantly blowing fuses. He had wired his boost controller switch to the OEM radio circuit and it couldn't take the extra power surge. It's just something to keep in mind here. You can wire up to this circuit if you wish, but keep in mind these factors.

As far as the yellow wire is concerned, some gauges are self dimming, some have a smoke background which automatically light on power up, some have a wire to bypass the power up "welcome", and others have a separate light source, or a combination of all of these factors. The only way to find out for certain is to momentarily tap the wire to the +12v once you locate your supply.

Are you able to tell me what colour the illumination wire is for my future reference? As no doubt ill end up buying something thats not auto dimming.

Agreed on ECU... should of probably said that... When it comes to wiring.. if ur not sure best not to do it. As wiring problems can be a bitch to locate and fix!

Haha yeh but by then its too late isnt it? Atleast if i am parked listening to music then i can keep an eye on the voltmeter and switch the car on when it gets a bit low

Each to their own man, everybody's opinion is different.

However, even though your voltmeter will show 12V, you may not be able to crank the engine due to lack of amperage. Also if you read what I stated in my previous response to this, I advised that the voltmeter be connected to the IGN, not the ACC. Whichever way you do it is up to you entirely, but don't count on the voltmeter for the reason stated above.

Voltmeters are used primarily if your vehicle is not installed with a charge fault warning lamp to alert you if the charge is insufficient or exceeding the required parameters. The R34 is fitted with this lamp, so in essence what Gts-t VSPEC has stated is correct, but people install them for a certain effect in their cars. Nobody is saying what you are doing is wrong, but more that it's not completely necessary.

Again, each to their own and what you do is your choice.

easy to find out what color is what. just get a car battery put black onto neutral and try out the red and yellow. one of them u should get a volt reading and the other should be the light. The Good old Cigarette lighter could be a good tap in point. its got a ground as the black, ignition power , and a light source wire u could tap into to illuminate your gauge .

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year. 
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
