Did anyone record tonight? What word for word did that tool say about how lots Torque means the Cayene go faster when its above 80kph?

May have gotten wrong, but isn't the abilty to pull off a line down to the Torque of a car, the Power is more readily associated with the overcoming of drag over time?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torque

It's the ability to apply force, or in other words the amount of acceleration at a given instant (travel of a piston onto the crank, multiplied by the gearbox, diff, wheel size etc etc).

Power refers to average power or "the power put out by an engine is equal to the force it exerts times its velocity." So the average of torque over a particular range of velocity. Generally quoted as either through the gearbox (preferably in the 1:1 gear) and the rest of drivetrain as "at the wheels" or simply from the crank.

In real terms cars with higher average power have more torque over the entire range of useful revolutions. Comparing between different engines and especially different cars gets very messy when you factor in different strokes, gearboxes, diffs, wheels etc. There is also the consideration of useful torque, which is torque which isn't going to simply spin the wheels by overcoming the friction between the tyres and the ground.

All in all, any generalized comment about such matters is fairly meaningless :).

Well I haven't heard the full statement, but as a general statement it is actually correct. The more torque an engine has, the more linearly it can sustain vehicle acceleration against variables such as drag. It is the reason large displacement engines (typically V8s) dominate in quartermile races. This is why I stop at 80km/h when I am taking on a V8...

what about the toolish statement that even though the gtho did a lap time around the area of their reasonably priced car... it still goes to the top... typical bogan pride. makes me disrespect the show and the car even more.. i wouldnt mind seeing a dogfight between the gtho and a hakosuka.

190kw S20 vs 224kw 351

sure the 351 has 515nm... but it weighs 1524kg and is a boat, the GTR weighs just 1120.

and has a much better stance, and downright looks cranky... the gtho doesnt look special at all.

typical bogans... why couldnt the big guy leave michael jackson here and remove the bogans

This is why I stop at 80km/h when I am taking on a V8...

Don't be scared a turbo 6 is more than a match for the majority of V8's just look at the xr6t vs the xr8 it regularly kicks it's bigger brothers teeth in.

I always wondered what it would have happened if the KPGC10 GT-R and KPGC110 GT-R were raced at bathurst back in the day, probably just would have gotten Skylines banned from racing a little sooner I suspect

The real WTF is that you made a thread about it.. everything ever said on that show is stupid!! Don't know why people watch it I can't stand it.

Yes it is a frustrating, painful show to watch

Yes, but in that instance the turbo 6 has 4 litres of displacement to produce several hundred nm of torque, which is what makes the XR6T a good match for the XR8. I wouldn't wager my nearly standard R33 with thereabouts 300nm of torque against an XR8 across the quartermile...atleast not a BA XR8. I managed to hold off an AU XR8 with my 1JZ Soarer in a rolling drag, but they only have poverty pack 5L Windsors and my Soarer has atleast 360nm (stock) mated to a transmission that was born to overtake. Better off quitting while I'm ahead at 80km/h...

Shouldn't be drag racing on the street anyway :)

Top Gear series 13 is out now, just started downloading it.

Top Gear Australia is shit.

I watched episode two and they have a race between the Veyron and a ..... crap eludes me for the moment. Excellent show. Ever wondered why when you search for top gear on you tube all you get is uk top gear?

There is one thing I like about OZ top gear and that is as follows.

Every episode they show on TV means that it is one more closer to being finished.

I think that it is ok to like OZ top geat for that reason and that reason alone.

    • No no, sorry I think I made you misunderstand. I have this Tee as well as the lines that go from there. What I am missing is the banjo bolt that connects this line (OEM turbo oil supply line) To this hole, this line is mounted on the turbo and reaches around it so you have easy access the oil and water supply being rerouted to this dual banjo port in the front. like this
    • Nothing at the moment as previously there was a crappy braided line going from engine block directly to the turbo. I have bought a used OEM hardline for the turbo oil supply, which goes from the engine block to the marked hole. I don't have any of the OEM banjo bolts for oil except the one at the block.
    • This is the tee No specs on the page I grabbed it from, out of stock there anyway. But it kinda looks like a 1mm pitch. Would not think it's going to be 0.75mm pitch.
    • OK, I'm with you now. The outlet of the tee that is banjo'd into the block. Dunno what it is, will have a scratch around. The M11 question is.....messy. The minor diameter of an M11x1.0 male thread is 9.917mm. This is smaller than the minor diameter of a 7/16"-24 UNS (which is 10.08mm). The M11 major is 11mm. That's smaller than the major on a 7/16"-24 UNS (which is 0.4375" or 11.1mm) so an M11x1 bolt should pass on the major side. The pitch of a -24 thread is 1.058mm, which is really close to the M11x1, so it should go in at least several turns. I would expect M11x1 to be loose in a 7/16"-24 UNS, at least until enough thread are engaged to make it stop screwing in, if that can happen. Probably wouldn't happen on such a short bolt as you're looking at on the oil tee. Keep in mind that 7/16"-24 is NOT a standard/typical 7/16" thread. Standard is 20. That's the UNF or fine thread. -24 is really fine. I imagine that Garrett chose -24 for the turbo housing oil inlet to get the number of threads engaged up. I would not expect Nissan to have an imperial (UNF, etc) thread on that tee. I would expect it to be metric (if it is a bolt thread) or BSP (actually the Japanese equivalent of BSP) if it is a pipe thread. Given that it's a banjo, it's going to be a bolt thread. If it looks like an 11mm will go in there, then 11mm seems likely. It is very possible that some clown has stuffed that thread by trying to jam some imperial "near equivalent" into it, perhaps with those hoses of yours. Got verniers? Measure up the threads on the hoses.
