I had the engine light come recently on in my S2 RB25DET NEO stagea, It is completely standard with the exception of the standard high boost mode which was done almost 3 years ago.

i had a engine diagnosis done and it's shown to be: Code 26: Boost Pressure Sensor.

Ecu was reset but still no fix.

I've done some reading and found:

"NEO has a "Boost Pressure Sensor" aka map sensor on the back of the engine rocker covers."

"Code 26

Boost Pressure sensor (Turbo models)

The boost pressure sensor is open or shorted (abnormally high or low voltage is registered).

Check harness and connector, check for boost pressure leaks, check boost pressure sensor"

I've removed the sensor and had a look at the small filter inbetween it and the J pipe and it doesn't seem dirty or blocked. I was wondering if i am looking at the correct sensor and it sounds like it is actually sensor related? or possibly a pressure leak somewhere?

I looked at the connector and it is clean and the wiring looks to be unbroken.

The car still runs perfectly (well appears to) and from this error code coming on, shown no actual sign of change in idle/drive/performance - The only thing that brought it to my attention was the light...

It does not R&R and it does not misfire.

The sensor is a small one located on a metal bracket off the firewall (situated above about #6 cylinder/coilpack)

It is a small black box about 5cm long by about 3 cm wide - with 2 x 10mm bolts screwing it to the bracket. Underneath it has a small vacuum hose which goes to a very small air filter (about the diameter of a 10 cent coin and about 1cm thick) and then a little more vacuum hose and then attaches to the standard intercooler piping just after the throttle body.

It read on the top:

"PS66-01

9X19

HITACHI

BOOST SENSOR"

Any help would be greatly appreciated in fixing this problem and making the engine light go away. :P

afaik, there is only 1. it's for the gauge. the ecu goes not need a boost pressure sensor. it uses afm to measure air flow, not manifold pressure. no idea where you got 4 sensors from. if they needed boost pressure for 4 things they still only need 1 sensor....

huddy anything over 18psi (ish) brings up this CEL

There is only one boost sensor and it is used for fuelling and boost cut etc, becareful what you do with it as it is integral to the mapping, if you plug it to stop the overboost CEL it will lean out 1 whole A/F which can lead to issues obviously.

Hey Trent, cheers for the reply, however i've only just read it and i'll update my findings...

I read a R34 workshop manual to try diagnose the wiring pinout - and possible causes and fixes for this code. I read that this sensor rely's on 2.7V and the engine light will come on if it is short circuiting (if it is below 0.6V) or if it is an open circuit (above 4.8 volts). I ran a multimeter on it and jiggled a couple of wires and to my surprise - engine light is now off - BUT - i know have a very very minor misfire, it only occurs at low RPM with no boost (only very slight throttle) AND it is not a constant issue (also there is NO engine light on now)... So back to the research board again to try and find the solution to this problem....

Hey huddy, did you solve this problem. My R34 GTT has just started suffering low boost, like 3psi max :) and after running the diagnostic i got the code 26 error. Since it's a boost related error and i'm getting almost no boost i'm wondering if it's related.

I didn't have a loss of boost so perhaps yours is actually a faulty sensor. I'd start with that anyway...

As for the manual I googled to find it on a us forum, I think it was Nico club or something

I did fix my problem, it was a bad contact causing a voltage problem causingthe code

ahhh the good old 18psi gauge

How did you get your car to trip that light before the actual Boost cut came in

From memory mine used to hit hard around 14 psi

also Trent have you played around with the TP limits in nistune regarding the Boost cut I wanna set mine to cut at 19psi as a safety if it goes over 18psi

or is it going to be a trial and error sort of thing where I keep adjusting the cut until its right

it was on the connector for the boost pressure sensor.

From what I can remember from the workshop manual, the error light and code comes on from either not enough voltage (under 2.6 I think makes closed circuit) or too much voltage (over 4.7 I think is open circuit). Correct voltage needs to be between these... I think the manual says around 4.2v...

I also have code 26 along with TPS problems and a high cold start idle in another topic with my R34 NEO6 which is driving me nuts. I don't want to have to start opening up the loom and start performing circuit tests on everything, and I believe I have high voltage on the BS also.

But when you say it was the connector (Boost Sensor Connector Plug?), did you clean the contact pins with contact cleaner and this resolved your closed/open circuit issue or did you do something else?

    • Yup. You can get creative and make a sort of "bracket" with cable ties. Put 2 around the sender with a third passing underneath them strapped down against the sender. Then that third one is able to be passed through some hole at right angles to the orientation of the sender. Or some variation on the theme. Yes.... ummm, with caveats? I mean, the sender is BSP and you would likely have AN stuff on the hose, so yes, there would be the adapter you mention. But the block end will either be 1/8 NPT if that thread is still OK in there, or you can drill and tap it out to 1/4 BSP or NPT and use appropriate adapter there. As it stands, your mention of 1/8 BSPT male seems... wrong for the 1/8 NPT female it has to go into. The hose will be better, because even with the bush, the mass of the sender will be "hanging" off a hard threaded connection and will add some stress/strain to that. It might fail in the future. The hose eliminates almost all such risk - but adds in several more threaded connections to leak from! It really should be tapered, but it looks very long in that photo with no taper visible. If you have it in hand you should be able to see if it tapered or not. There technically is no possibility of a mechanical seal with a parallel male in a parallel female, so it is hard to believe that it is parallel male, but weirder things have happened. Maybe it's meant to seat on some surface when screwed in on the original installation? Anyway, at that thread size, parallel in parallel, with tape and goop, will seal just fine.
    • How do you propose I cable tie this: To something securely? Is it really just a case of finding a couple of holes and ziptying it there so it never goes flying or starts dangling around, more or less? Then run a 1/8 BSP Female to [hose adapter of choice?/AN?] and then the opposing fitting at the bush-into-oil-block end? being the hose-into-realistically likely a 1/8 BSPT male) Is this going to provide any real benefit over using a stainless/steel 1/4 to 1/8 BSPT reducing bush? I am making the assumption the OEM sender is BSPT not BSPP/BSP
    • I fashioned a ramp out of a couple of pieces of 140x35 lumber, to get the bumper up slightly, and then one of these is what I use
    • I wouldn't worry about dissimilar metal corrosion, should you just buy/make a steel replacement. There will be thread tape and sealant compound between the metals. The few little spots where they touch each other will be deep inside the joint, unable to get wet. And the alloy block is much much larger than a small steel fitting, so there is plenty of "sacrificial" capacity there. Any bush you put in there will be dissimilar anyway. Either steel or brass. Maybe stainless. All of them are different to the other parts in the chain. But what I said above still applies.
    • You are all good then, I didn't realise the port was in a part you can (have!) remove. Just pull the broken part out, clean it and the threads should be fine. Yes, the whole point about remote mounting is it takes almost all of the vibration out via the flexible hose. You just need a convenient chassis point and a cable tie or 3.
