I like your idea of keeping it original. what I would be doing is checking your fuel rail pressure to ascertain the health of the fuel pump 1st - don't want that letting you down.

Can I ask why you want to put a cheap cat in? I know it's attractive to pay less, but the old addage: the joy of a cheap price is quickly lost when quality fails, certainly applies.

I coughed up the additional $ and got a HKS cat (not saying you should, but I've seen a few failure reports on catco/ xforce + they are not ADR compliant - I checked for my area).

I'd agree with others when they say that 300 is doable. mine only has 2530's, decent exhaust/ induction and makes just shy of that on 18psi. Stock inj/ AFM - but with nismo pump and tweaked ECU. I bought inj's, PFC, Z32's Poncams etc, but am satisfied with the power it makes without them...

good luck with it :P

How do you check the pressure? Well I would love to have a HKS one but at this moment, I dont wanna use up everything in my bank =x If the Catco one will last me for a a couple of years it'll be good enough. Like I said, I'm happy with the amount of power drawn with the level of mods I have (if it does come up close to 300). Another thing is if you have stock dump/front pipes, I dont think changing the any brand of cat would make a significant difference and probably the factor to condition is durability instead of power. If a HKS cost 800 and Catco 200 and the power difference is 5kW with Catco lasting you somewhere between 2-5yrs and HKS a lifetime, I would go Catco and use the spare cash for something else. The next mod on the list would be coilover and after that if I get a lil serious, I will have the cat and front/dump pipes done as well.

At the end of the day, it might be the same logic as exhaust size, a 3" is a 3". The amount of power/airflow is more or less the same doesnt matter which brand you go with. The fact that we want a JDM exhaust is because of the quality of welding, finish, sound etc. But in terms of power/airflow, its bugger all difference for the price you're paying.

PS: Correct me if I'm wrong but this is what I've picked up from reading on people's experience.

Most competent mechanics will be able to test pump rail pressure.

I saw a few reports of early life failure in the catco/xforce cats (search will show what brand and when) but they seemed pretty average to me. i chose HKS due to CPI count and design, but yes - not cheap! :P

Interestingly, the exhaust I had made locally (with mandrel bends) is a LOT less power productive than the jap (unbranded) catback. both only have 1 straight through muffler with 1/2 inch difference in size... odd. I will be putting this back on when I get time!

Hey you've got me thinking for a min. Even if the fuel pump is working ok, it might be advisable to get a fuel regulator as well. But is that thing even legal? If its not I'll give that a miss. If I do get it, does that mean I will need a new fuel rail as well??

yes, a FPR (fuel pressure regulator) is legal, there is a stock one at the front of your fuel rail. using an A/M adj one allows you to increase the base pressure. this can of course show deficiencies with your current pump as you are asking it to work harder. the benefit is it supplies greater pressure to the injectors. usually the stock one is sufficient for your power goal, but I have a nismo one sitting around if you really want one :(

oh - most of them work with the stock rail :)

Well, after the install of the HKS front pipe, the turbos spool up like crazy. It's great. :P Which also leads me to believe I don't have HKS2530s, but HKS GTSS. That would explain the low power figure of 270awkw previously also.

Booked in for its clutch and tune next week. Should have some numbers on Friday night. Just being conservative and hoping for 260rwkW given the exhaust restrictions and tired old engine (I also put a quieter 3" muffler on the rear I had lying around to replace the cannon).

I bought my HKS second hand. I wouldn't have paid retail for them. However, the Blitz unit at Just Jap is great value for new. I would steer clear of the Chinese shit as the shape is very different from the Japanese ones, which I am sure is for a reason (tuned length?).

I'm amazed at the difference it made to the spool up under 3,000 revs. I didn't realise the stock front pipe was that bad? Given it's a decent size. Either that or it's all in my head (also quite a possibility LOL).

I've got stock dumps on mine, 280rwkw @ 16psi from memory with GT-SS's, but ive got some stuff to sort out first and then ill go for 300-330rwkw, still using factory dumps :D

Far out I would love 300rwkW LOL. Will be happy with a conservative 260rwkW from the tired old thing though. :P

I use the Greddy MX in mild steel which works a treat.

Also great value right now and good size. But they don't have a flex bend, perhaps harder to install? Haha.

Alright, I'm getting them then. I just made a few enquiries for PFC and PFC Boost Controller and the lead time to get them in from Japan is ridicules, something like 1 month+. I'm having 2nd thoughts on tuning the car now. I might just get the cat, front pipe and suspension done instead if the wait is that long.

Hopefully during my saving up again after these mods something cheap will pop up on the forum.

I have had the front pipes off a few times, and didn't experience any trouble getting them on or off each time.

Oh okay cool. I eat my words.

Yeah you might luck out with second hand anyways. Good luck and I'll let you know how I go with the tune next week.

are you going to replace with stock or aftermarket? Bummer

It's the front one. I might just get it rebuilt. It's already a HKS of some kind. I was told 2530 but they spool so well I think it's a GTSS.

Interestingly I was told by the bloke tuning it that the stock air box will be a restriction when it's fixed, that it should see over 300rwkw with my turbos but the air box will keep it to 260/270rwkw. specifically put it back on as the pods were rooted. Thing is on here we've seen people on here with upwards of 340rwkw with them, so yeah I dunno.

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
