Hey Guys.

Was working on my R33 GTS-T Series 2. Put in new plugs. and now the car has never run the same.

I replace the plugs as the car was unstabe under heavy throttle loads.

I put it back together and its running like a WRX.

After this tho....

I bought new CoilPacks, and new plugs again... and gapped them. and changed the fuel filter.

AND it is still running like a shitbucket wrx. tested crank angle sensor and engin compression ratio, and also fuel pressure.

Any Help.

Next step is to have a look at the injectors.

Any suggestions before i take my car to bits?????

1. whats plugs did u put in? (list the model number and brand please)

2. what gap did you set them too?

gotta feeling you have used the wrong plugs and or at the wrong gap...

could also be an earthing issue, but lets eliminate these items one at a time first...

make sure you have them clipped into the clips properly (i had to use a flat blade screw driver to lever up the plastic tags to clip mine in properly) also i've been told if you've degreased your engine or something lately over the rocket cover that the oil/crap can fall down and short your plugs or some shit.

but its most likely your coils or you've f**ked the gap up

Used standard NGK plugs Part no. PFR5G-11

Gapped at .8

And the coilpacks are brand new. and the resistance has been tested also... all showing up fine.

The problem started when i took the old plugs out. And after replacing everything plug and coilwise its still not running properly. So far 3 sets of plugs.... and counting.

the car also seems to be running rather lean..

But still sounds like its not getting enough fuel or spark or something.

What do you mean about clipping them into place???? My mechanic mate is doin all the work for me as he owns an R32. So things are pretty much simular.

You say you changed the coils - were they Splitfires or similar, or 2nd-hand stockers? If the latter, it's very possible that one or more of the coils you've swapped on aren't working properly. If it is indeed running lean as you say though (measured, or guessed?), maybe you bumped an injector plug or crimped a line to the fuel filter or something, who knows. The timing might be out too, did you knock the plug on the CAS (front of the engine)? Stuffed AFM/plug? Plastic still on the fuel filter (have seen that before lol)

Does it have a consistent miss at idle? If so, assuming it's a spark issue, pull the plugs one by one and see if any are wet. If they are then your injectors are probably working fine and you've identified the cylinder/cylinders that isn't/aren't firing. Then it's a process of elimination... swap coils around and see if the problem moves with a coil for example, or whether it stays on a given cylinder, swap plugs around, check connectors, clips, earth straps, coil loom, AFM etc. If all else fails, grab a mate with a working S1.5/S2 33 and swap parts until yours runs properly and work it out from there.

Also, IIRC 6s are the stock heat range for plugs. I used to use BCPR6ES, they're coppers and are pretty cheap and did the trick nicely.

when i changed my coilpacks, i didnt clip the loom/wiring harness into one of the coilpacks properly and after a while it wiggled free and lost connection. therefore a cylinder stop firing

took me ages to realize what i'd done wrong and i just got a flat blade and clipped the tag into it properly.

also check your afm plug ect

i was gonna say have a look at the wiring for the coils, there are chances that some of the wires are broken and earthing, or that the insides of the plug for the coil is not connecting, i had the same thing, but it tunred out to be my sticky injectors.

Normally if it is a plug issue it will be around the 3500 - 4000rpm mark, it will start sounding like a WRX.

If that is the case BKR6E which is a v-power plug or like the one mentioned by Revhead the BCPR6ES will do the job.

Yeah it will def depend on whether the coil packs are bran new or second hand. And usually they will start off ok until they get hot then they start to break down. Try removing one coil pack at a time with the engine running and see which one has no effect when removed. The ones that are working will affect the engines idol when removed the bad one/'s won't. My experience with AFM's is usually they just stop working full stop and thus the engine doesn't run at all. I had one go on my R33 GTR and the engine just died. May be worth checking the igniter unit? I don't know anything about those sorry.

Hi guys...sort of having a similar problem with my series 1 r33...the car started backfiring about 150km ago, but only under heavy throttle as the car still runs fine at 3500-4500 rpm...it only seems to be when the car is at high boost. The car idles fine and spools without problems, however as soon as i put my foot to the floor and it gets to 14psi it backfires heavily. The oil has been changed under 500km ago and there are no oil leaks and no smoke coming from the exhaust (which i hope to rule out turbo problems). My mate seems to think its def a fuel problem so I changed the plugs on wednesday (put ridiums in and didnt change the gab at all. The plugs are all connected properly to aviod 1 unclipping but :blush: im pretty sure the ridium's have made it worse. Replaced the AFM and even the O2 sensor and still nothing. About to change the plugs again to NGK BKR6E's and see if that makes a difference, but from what I can gather from the reply's above i think my coilpacks are f&*ked. Any ideas before i go out and buy new coilpacks only to find that it may not fix my problem or would i be able to get away with second-hand ones?

I suggest you find someone with the same engine that is running well and swap coil packs for a test. Go for a 5 to 10min drive getting up and over(if possible) the trouble spot and if it runs better than you can safely spend the money on some new coil packs. Also get a gap gauge and re-gap your plugs to .07 which ever plugs you use. If possible use the recommended ones for your model not a referred one unless you've got some serious hp. You'd be surprised at how heat numbers and different types of plugs have an effect on the cars performance.

Myr33GTS-T try your ignition module it could be stuffed as this was my problem when my car sounded like a wrx haha and shaggy pretty sure it would be the coils as a mate has the exact same problem.

    • For once a good news  It needed to be adjusted by that one nut and it is ok  At least something was easy But thank you very much for help. But a small issue is now(gearbox) that when the car is stationary you can hear "clinking" from gearbox so some of the bearing is 100% not that happy... It goes away once you push clutch so it is 100% gearbox. Just if you know...what that bearing could be? It sounding like "spun bearing" but it is louder.
    • Yeah, that's fine**. But the numbers you came up with are just wrong. Try it for yourself. Put in any voltage from the possible range and see what result you get. You get nonsense. ** When I say "fine", I mean, it's still shit. The very simple linear formula (slope & intercept) is shit for a sensor with a non-linear response. This is the curve, from your data above. Look at the CURVE! It's only really linear between about 30 and 90 °C. And if you used only that range to define a curve, it would be great. But you would go more and more wrong as you went to higher temps. And that is why the slope & intercept found when you use 50 and 150 as the end points is so bad halfway between those points. The real curve is a long way below the linear curve which just zips straight between the end points, like this one. You could probably use the same slope and a lower intercept, to move that straight line down, and spread the error out. But you would 5-10°C off in a lot of places. You'd need to say what temperature range you really wanted to be most right - say, 100 to 130, and plop the line closest to teh real curve in that region, which would make it quite wrong down at the lower temperatures. Let me just say that HPTuners are not being realistic in only allowing for a simple linear curve. 
    • I feel I should re-iterate. The above picture is the only option available in the software and the blurb from HP Tuners I quoted earlier is the only way to add data to it and that's the description they offer as to how to figure it out. The only fields available is the blank box after (Input/ ) and the box right before = Output. Those are the only numbers that can be entered.
    • No, your formula is arse backwards. Mine is totally different to yours, and is the one I said was bang on at 50 and 150. I'll put your data into Excel (actually it already is, chart it and fit a linear fit to it, aiming to make it evenly wrong across the whole span. But not now. Other things to do first.
    • God damnit. The only option I actually have in the software is the one that is screenshotted. I am glad that I at least got it right... for those two points. Would it actually change anything if I chose/used 80C and 120C as the two points instead? My brain wants to imagine the formula put into HPtuners would be the same equation, otherwise none of this makes sense to me, unless: 1) The formula you put into VCM Scanner/HPTuners is always linear 2) The two points/input pairs are only arbitrary to choose (as the documentation implies) IF the actual scaling of the sensor is linear. then 3) If the scaling is not linear, the two points you choose matter a great deal, because the formula will draw a line between those two points only.
