Hey guys,

I am just posting to get some opinions on this from owners of stageas or people in the know.

I get my P's next month and for I am looking at getting something similar to this or if it isn't sold, possibly this one.

Would this be a good choice as a first car if it is N/A? If it isn't N/A would it be worth buying and taking the turbo out? How are they on fuel? How much would it cost to get the turbo taken out and then the work done to make it run properly without it?

Anyway, any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

you're lucky you didn't post this on another forum or you'd be flamed something chronic :devil:

the question of de-charging a factory turbo motor gets asked alot, and in short, the response is don't bother. the compression ratios aren't set up to run naturally aspirated and would be about as powerful as an 1800kg excel

as for fuel consumption, it depends how heavy your right foot is, they generally aren't fantastic though

You cannot take the turbocharger out.

Engine number / chassis number will bring up flags that it is a turbocharged model REGARDLESS if you've taken it off. They're registered / stamped as a turbo model for a reason.

There are no loop holes or ways around it so you will have to buy a naturally aspirated model.

That Stagea will not be suitable because

1. It is modified

2. it has a turbo

3. It has better than 125kw per tonne (just)

I think the cops will go by the plate anyway (RB25DET) and it won't help you to remove the turbo (but you could check).

If you did remove the turbo it wouldn't even go as well as a n/a neo Stagea and would probably use even more gas than they do already!

PS if you can find one the late S1 n/a Stagea has the neo engine ( I had one) and they are almost as quick as a stock S1 turbo. They are about $3000 in NZ but I think they are quite rare in Aus.

Go with QWK32's suggestion - get a cheap to buy, run and insure car and save up for a better car when you are qualified.

my suggestion is

get a cheap car to as your first car as you willl most likely crash or damage it

learn how to drive

get off your P's and then get a turbo charged car

in the end its your choice, but many here speak from experience.

i wanted a r32 gtr when i got my p's, but being new to the driving world and never driven a turbo, just a RWD NA, i would of treated it the same and be wrapped around a tree.

but the chance of cops pulling you up in a 'stock looking' stagea is rare, i've driven through blitz nights and booze bus's, even been stalked by cops, i guess they just dont bother.

then again there always has to be some one unlucky out there. . . ..

If you're after a wagon, and Nissan, then a nice S3 R31 would be a reasonable thing (and less than $5k). I'm not trying to force you into the stereotype of P-plate R31 owners, but there you go!

FWIW, I bought my 240Z when I was 19 (first car). By the time I was 21, it was running a custom EFI L24 Turbo and produced a little over 200% factory kW at the rear wheels... I haven't really ever bent it (curbed it once, trashing a control arm & slightly creasing a guard), but all my mates did something, and it wasn't always their fault. You're just a magnet for shit-happening at that age!

It's not that I'm after a wagon so much. It's just that the stagea I posted really grabbed my attention and I really liked it.

But I've been looking at R31's, and I've come across only a couple that look in good condition that don't need alot of work. :\

Hmmm, as far as I knew, N/A Stageas were ineligible for import approval anyway (until the atmo M35's finally gain complaince), so finding one would be extremely difficult - it'd probably be a private individual import. And having a C34 with an atmo RB25 trying to push around ~1600kg's of car is not my idea of a worthwhile buy, even if it was just to cruise around. They're heavy enough on fuel as it is, and having to push it to keep it even mildly moving along is not going to help lower its fuel use.

And like I said in the post above yours, it's hard to find ones without problems and don't need a lot of work and maintenance.

Also, if you're after something a little different, and fun to drive, there was an atmo Mitsubishi Legnum for sale on carsales when I was looking a few weeks ago: pretty sure it was manual too. A stocko Legnum will obliterate a stocko stag in the handling department (I had a bog stock twin turbo Leggy, and it was one of the best handling cars I have ever driven), so it may be an option if it's still available?? Worth a look, at any rate. I believe this one was a private import as well, so you're not likely to see another one any time soon...

It must be gone. These are the only 3 green stageas on carsales, all of which are turbo.

I think I'll just be looking for something else.

    • The question then becomes - was there any fluid coming from that hole before you did the rebuild ?    You may not have noticed, of course.   Depending on how you did the rebuild, the possibility has to be considered that somehow (cleaning ?)  fluid entered that hole and is now being 'forced'  out by small movements of the proportioning valve.   From the factory, there's actually a small rubber plug in that hole but with age and under-bonnet heat it's quite common for it to 'go missing'.  That rubber plug is designed to allow the venting process but also to prevent 'stuff' getting to the area (prevent corrosion, etc).   The plug is also not available as a spare part AFAIA. Personally I wouldn't race and buy a new master just yet but keep an eye on the area to see if the 'leak' continues.   If you're concerned about brake fluid damaging nearby paintwork, cable tie a piece of suitable absorbant material over the hole and remove/monitor occasionally.    Operation of the proportioning valve and the brake master itself won't be affected, but also keep an eye on brake fluid level, of course. In terms of a new master, the genuine part is getting expensive, unfortunately.  Amayama is showing AUD900+.   I was searching recently and there's an aftermarket part available from Japan made by 'Parts Assist': https://zenmarket.jp/en/yahoo.aspx?q=BNR32%2bBM50&p=1 Whether it's any good I have no idea, although in my experience Japanese aftermarket stuff is pretty good quality-wise.   The above site allows overseas buyers to purchase stuff more easily from Japan but there are fees and shipping costs, of course.   The original Japanese seller page is here: https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/p1197401228 Copper/Nickel is fine but I still prefer bundy tube and it's also cheaper.
