Hey guys,

My Timing belt is making a whining noise and i want to know if it is something to worry about? It's sitting at ~140,000km now and has had the noise since when i first got it ~126,000km. I have proof of the 100,000km major service done at Giant Nissan in Wangara (Perth) so i know it wasn't just said by the previous owner. The noise only occurs within the first ~20 seconds of starting the car and i haven't noticed it at any other times.

I took it to my mate today at auto masters who quoted me $800 cash job to service it and do a 'rebuild' to an extent on the timing belt which meant all new seals and bearings and belt etc... which he said cost ~$300 for the 'timing belt kit' and then the water pump ~$100, a Full service on it (oil filter, oil etc...) and the labour, he was confident it would get rid of the noise and was worried that it might give at any moment because he cannot see the belts without taking the cover off and all that...

Does anyone get this noise? Is it something i should be getting fixed or a common problem not to worry about? I know that if the belt snaps or slips my piston will smash the valves and cause a few grand in damage, correct?

yeah well the only difference is i don't get a auto masters reciept, i only get parts reciepts for warrenty and yarda yarda.

Know much about this problem though? Do you know if it is even a problem or just a common noise which doesn't hurt anything? The whining coming from the timing belt cover at the top in front of the cams.

mate make sure that u r sure that its the timing belt! it could be a number of things, my mate had the a simular problem execpt it would be noisy all the time. Turned out to be the trust bearing lol (not sayin u as bright as him though).

Another mate had a racing timing belt and it was just always noisy! But considering that it only happens for the first 20 sec of driving i would say its not the timing belt (at most it could be a tention issue).

Next time drive the car and its really hot turn it off and turn it straight one, does it still make the noise? i know my friend had an air con compressor issue in his car, it make like 20 sec worth of really had noise and then goes away (its really loud!!!)

i know it is under the timing belt cover for sure because when i start the car and put my hand on the casing of the timing belt it is making the noise and vibrating to an extent, more like a rubbing noise but still whining, nothing from the belts or compressor.

The date of the 'major service' which included timing belt and water pump at 106420km was done 10/04/2006, so 3+ years ago... this was done before i owned the car. The spark plugs were changed then along with bunch of other things. This is the 100,000km service yeah?

The belt was later found to be noisey and once looked into was found to be too tight, doesn't say if it was fixed or what happened.

I think because it is 3+ years ago i should be spending the cash and getting it done now to save the hassle. My mate has guaranteed the noise will be gone and this will also include at idle, first switched on and running. Also it's getting a general service and a full engine bay clean to make it look prettier. haha. Going in on thursday...

Anyone disagree? Please i want to hear it if you have a good reason :(

I had that exact same symptoms afew months ago, it was my crank angle sensor making the noise because of the clear timing cover I put on, the CAS was alot more forward thus putting more load on the CAS drive key itself..

It could also be a bent timing gear making the belt rub on the casing, saw that once, someone had tried to stop the pulleys moving by jamming something in there. Or a stuffed tensioner bearing its not unheard of having one of those noisy from new. Price sounds good to me it is a bit of work.

      So....to find any R chassis part number, get your VIN (will be something like ER33-xxxxxx for you) and go to: https://www.amayama.com/en/genuine-catalogs/nissan and enter it. From there you have access to a web version of Nissan's part system, FAST. It is a bit tricky to get used to, so maybe have a shot and post up what you think.  You can also search by general model but note in some cases your car might have different options so VIN is safest.  On diagram 211 I got 14075-75T16 for Connector, Water Hose If I search for part 14053‑21U10 that you posted, that is also a water hose but not the one bolted to the plenum and 14075‑04U00 is the fitting where the water hose goes into the block.

      Yeah now we are talking I much prefer coolers in the front middle because it lessens the chance of a small bump to a corner stopping the whole event. I was thinking the AT cooler can move out of the radiator, delete the AT/engine coolant interwarmer and mount a separate cooler with a thermoswitch somewhere further back as is common in racing, that would be one thing. Beyond that, the engine oil cooler is an obvious one to move to the wheel arch, potentially one on each side, but unused space is an issue. I did have a earlier pic with the bumper off but it doesn't show how busy the corners are: DS is full of the auto driving sensors and PS is totally fully of windscreen washer fluid reservoir But ultimately I was hoping to keep the AC, and the water/air heat exchanger is fundamental so it is not just the radiator that needs to be in front BTW here's airflow to the rad as it ran at the track (one horn is gone now and I'll remove the lights next time):

      your right the maps for Australia came out in 2017 but are 2010 maps. i got the updated maps SD card put it in and it was the same. Same maps in my Brothers Nissan Patrol. 2020 i think his car is

      Yeahhhh, the costs have killed me. Spent more than the cost of an engine rebuild and it most mostly servicing and a tune lol.
