i have a r33 s2 auto and have changed the turbo over to a hypergear hyflowed turbo. when it gets on boost above 6psi it sounds like a huge whistling sound coming from it ?????? Mods so far are fmic, full 3" exhaust split fire coils and a turb o smart boost tee. I have cheched the gaskets and intercooler pipes and have got no leaks anywhere. This has become a bit of a problem some times because that is all you can here when it gets a bit of psi. does anyone else have this problem or is it normal??

If it turns on to grinding noise it means bearing failure that causing wheels to eat in to housing. Normally due to oil contamination, insufficient oil pressure or flow.

Normally BB turbos give that sort of noise before failing.

Check for vacuum leaks.

hmmm...not sounding good....although it is reason to buy a new one...was running fine tonight...in the cool air n all too...drove into city was coming home give it some stick and ...arrrgghhhhhhh....wtf is that noise...gradually got worse

I'm not exactly sure what turbo it is...I've seen standard ones and its not the same...

but rebuild or replace whats the best option

assuming its the problem

Well there are 2x sorts of noises. one is a howling sound. This is common to BB turbos, and it gets very loud from time to time, then you have fins rubbing housings making a grinding noise, turbo stops function. You also get a small grinding alike bearing noise when power off your engine. If this is the case then the turbo needs to be taken out and looked at.

The other sound is a high pitch whistling sound. This is generally due to air pass though a small gap. could be a leaking pipe, or any gaskets on the intake system.

this noise is kind of like the noise a loose fanbelt makes on start-up...but alot worse..

started around moorabin ,by the time i got near frankston it was getting much worse

but only noticable with heavy throttle applied. driven normally seems fine

..hmm just took a quik spin around the block seems fine..but didnt get a chance to mash the pedal...maybe try an oil flush..is motul 3100...ok?

i have replaced all the hose clamps and silicone hose's,all the vacum hoses and have checked the gaskets and nothi ng is leaking. Oil is changed every 5k. it makes constant boost and is not loosing power. this turbo has always made this sound and now i have just got to a point were it is starting to piss me off. the turbo has only done 20k. help

Hmm sounds like an air leak to me. I had this problem for a while with my hypergear turbo, Check your 4 manifold studs.. see if there tight.. check for anything loose , cooler piping and all. if not then it has to be oil starvation, did you change your oil feed line and bolt? because nissan come stock with an oil restriction... on the bolts..

    • Don't even try to run it on the stock ECU if you're going to have the boost controller bring boost above ~10 psi. I've already told you that. If you use the Nistune ECU, you will need to CAREFULLY read the available documentation for Neo tuning, and read some threads on the Nistune forums, to discover the various things you have to do to prevent the ECU from going bananas when the boost is too high. The is a table associated with th boost sensor that must be modified to prevent it from shitting the bed. This is just one of the things that you will need to do to the tune in Nistune, because the Neo turbo ECU will be expecting to see a number of things (such as the TCS) that are not there, and you have to block the DTCs on those. It is totally not surprising to me that you are having the problems that you are, but the solutions to these problems have been known for >15 years. So just get it done.
    • Hi. Sry iam not a mechanic and iam not at the car atm so i dont know 100% but they told they measure those and even try to change those. AFM they have two. Coils are new a they have my old one too. Plugs too. ECU...we have 25 NEO stock and Nistune 25 NEO.   But i dont know if any one those could be the problem and why/if/what can cause this, Only thing they did not check is fuel...but that walbro 255 is new(like 1,5 years)... That fuel pressure gauge idk...but i let them know Any suggestions?   EDIT: how can they know if it is like you say he ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high? Tha car has boost controler
    • Can you clarify what you mean by boost cut, do you mean it misfires both when under load (driving) and when stationary and out of gear? Or does the ECU pull power when it reaches a specific boost level that is too high (boost control issue)? Does it occur at idle with no throttle? When you say "the ECU is OK", what ECU is it and why do you think it is OK? Have you used the NEO ECU, and if so do you have a MAP sensor attached? Same for the AFM, why do you think it is OK? Do you have any way to put a fuel pressure gauge on it (even just a mechanical one between the fuel filter and fuel rail)?
