I've heard someone say that 98 Octane fuels offered by the different petrol station brands are different in their makeup, and apparently BP ultimate is the better one to use. Is this true or a load of waffle? Does it really matter if someone uses V Power or BP Ultimate or Vortex 98?

I think BP Ultimate is the only one to be guaranteed to have a minimum of 98 octane, so its a safe bet for a tuned car.

I personally get good results out of VPower.

Also, Happy Birthday Ruby!

if its a pure petroleum based fuel advertised at 98% octane then by law it has to be 98% with no additives. BP and Mobile and Caltex and Coles all have authentic 98% octane. (I mainly use Mobil myself but the others have been just as good).

Just steer away from the United '100% octane' as it is an ethanol blended fuel and can affect your tune (unless your car has been tuned for that fuel especially)

you know the octane rating isnt a percentage, yeah ben?

i do now

I thought vpower was 98? ohwell if thats the case I wont bother spending my money on it, as its the same price caltex sell their 98 (which is the same as mobils incidentally)

V-Power is definitely 98 Octane:

http://www.colesexpress.com.au/shell-fuels...ll-v-power.aspx

Their 95 Octane variety is just called Shell Unleaded 95.

LOL, this whole time I thought it was 95, and the 98 was called Shell Optimax... (Not sold here Or did V-Power used to be 95?)

Wait, doesnt look like they sell Optimax anymore..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shell_V-Power

There are different grades of V-Power all over the world, including a 95 RON version, so that must be where I got that from..

V-Power sold in Hong Kong reaches RON 107; it is the highest native RON in consumer grade commercial petrol across worldwide.

Thanks guys ... had a good day with family ... even got an awesome present.

Tickets and accommodation for Sydney for the Top Gear show! Was wondering why Tracy was getting moody that I was planning it for myself :)

Wanted a brake upgrade ... but thats asking too much :mage:

I wrote a little poem...

spare time + beers =

"Twas the night before Christmas, and all was so quiet,

The hills were so silent, not a reindeer in sight,

Till along came a skyline and made shit-loads of noise,

So much so, Santa dropped all his toys.

Children in bed, snuggled, warm and unheard,

Till the skyline popped flames down-shifting to third.

While the fat man struggled to pick up his gifts,

The GTR lost traction changing to 5th!"

hmmmmm i lost like 5 + kw after using the V power and i got the dyno graphs to prove it....even going back straight onto the BP Ultimate after realising the 34 lost power didnt change anything :mage:

im keeping her on the Ultimate forever now lol :)

And i thought boost controllers were for pussies :mage:

they are. :)

unless both dyno runs were done on the same day, that 5kw "difference" isnt worth the paper its printed on.

This happened twice tonight, I'm going 55 in a 60 zone (to conserve fuel) and in both cases, a cop in front of me slows down to around 40, even when he has other cars behind him. Once he realised that my car is completely stock they turn off into some random side street, probably pissed off that he won't meet his quota tonight :)

    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.

    • Unsolicited advice? Keep the engine as close to stock as you can. Nothing wrong with adding some boost and making a little more power, but given where you are, you really don't want to try to make it into a monster. I can't imagine the roads are up to it, and the lack of locla support when it grenades will be a ball ache. FWIW, If there is a dyno around that you can access, then brand new injectors are a good idea, which will lead you to (at least) putting a Nistune in it, which will allow you to put an R35 AFM on it, all of which will make it possible to make it much much nicer to drive and live with.
