honestly I would not bother with a 32 N1 or VII unless you want it as a museum piece. 32 N1s rarely come up but I see lots of 32 VIIs in shit condition and not worth buying. the ones that are original and in good condition cost decent $$$ and having paid that for it you'd be mad to put kms on it or modify it or 'enjoy' it in any way other than just looking at it and polishing it once a month. so if you want a 32 GTR to enjoy I'd seek out a low km, neat, good condition 93 or 94 model with owner history (pref even 1 owner car) and log books. that way it's not expensive enough to be a real collectible but it's still nice, neat and worth buying. and you can actually have some fun in it.

as far as a car to drive and enjoy goes a 32 N1 or VII is not that special. there is nothing on them that can't be easily equalled (and bettered) with a few aftermarket parts etc. their value now is really only as a collection piece IF (and it's a big if) you an get one in original condition, and still in good nick and with supporting paperwork (owner history, log books etc) otherwise you are just paying too much money for an average condition 32 GTR that will be easily surpassed by a lightly modded neat 89 model.

just my opinion, but paying big money for a 32 N1 these days doesn't make sense to me unless it's the 'extra' GTR that you keep just to admire.

Hey Kristian, you mentioned better buying at the end of the year.... how much better are we talking? Is it like THE time to buy, in december?

are the other comparable good times to buy throughout the year?

That's possibly a smarter way of looking at it. Cos yes i would be looking to mod.

Is there a "V-Spec" R32? Would you say that would be a more valid option? Or would your preference still lie with a non-spec, late model, low KM's GTR?

well if you find a good V spec or V spec II R32 that is reasonable money then there's no reason not to buy one. it's just that there is a 'badge premium' on them that is only really justified if you're a collector. they have different suspension (big deal it's probably old and fked), they have brembos (again, big deal, easy to upgrade from a 33 or even to something better like F40s etc), and a few other cosmetic differences (again easy to replicate), the only thing they have that is not easy to replicate is faster ATTESSA sampling rate but it's not a huge deal.

I guess my point is, if you lined up 2 R32 GTRs. one is a very neat, non vspec 94 model, with log books and a genuine 80,000kms and one is a v spec of similar spec and condition I would have to seriously think about how much more I'd want to pay for the v-spec..... my personal answer is: not much. :laugh:

I certainly wouldn't exclude V-specs from your search as just like every car it is possible to find a good one for reasonable money, but I've found given there are lots more non-vspecs out there you have better chance of finding a quality, well looked after 32 that is not a vspec.

The same goes for any type of car. The FD crew go crazy about RS spec cars but with some aftermarket parts the lower spec cars can easily become the aggressors. But the fact of the matter is that many people buy sports cars for not only handling but also image. A higher spec model will always get that little more respect, as will a later model. For this reason, its a slightly better investment to purchase a higher spec model.

However quality should play a large role in a purchase, I wouldnt except a lower condition car because of the spec.

Well put - I use the same theory with customers who are incredibly picky about any options. The condition of the car should always be a higher priority than what options it has or doesn't have.

lol, I thnk you put it even more succinctly that me. but that's the basic idea. quality of a particular car should be number 1 priority over options etc.

when it comes down to it that's all the v-specs etc are. option packs and a sticker. so you always want to go for the better quality car over the more optioned/rare car. and the sheer weight of numbers tells you that with 32s the better quality cars are most often going to be base models.

sure it's worth paying a little extra for a vspec over a base model of the same condition but I wouldn't pay a lot if you plan on actually using the car. as once you put a whole lot of kms on it, have a little fender bender in it, and put some mods on it, then the price premium it once commanded will be goneski.

Here's one I would love to have in my garage, but im still trying to get over the price, which btw is firm.

If anyone here is seriously interested in an immaculate, low kms one, please let me know. I am sure he is going to change again - before this, he had the original Vspec in bayside blue.

Late last night, I saw a 2000 model vspec was up for auction today (thursday) at Tokyo along with 7 other GTR's.

So i gave Garry a buzz, and within 5 minutes he was on the phone to his guys in Japan organising to have it checked out first thing thismorning!

Turned out to be pretty much a perfect car for me apart from the rims.

Did not have any luck at the auction though! :( Garry told me that in the end (landed complied and registered - etc), the cost of this one would have been 12k more than my current set budget!

Anyway, have attached pics and description for records sake :(

Sold for 3.41 mil car cost, that's about the right sort of money for that car - kind've makes you laugh at the "45,000km" V-Specs selling at dealers locally for under $50K really...

    • Well, I can recommend the partial AV system translation CD I ordered from Car Audio Workshop in NZ. Whilst it didn't address the date issue, it has conveniently translated on-screen menu items into English, and now allows the GPS-received time to be offset in hours rather than minutes, so I can display Eastern Australian time accurately ( and bump it by another hour when daylight savings starts ).
    • Yuh, if it's 45°C outside, my car is driving in it.
    • I'd be curious to hear more. Otherwise, have you driven a modern x-trail? I wonder how it compares. Here in Australia they are/were popular for rentals and fleet vehicles. I have been in some and my impression was they are bad. But, this may have been very different in the 2000s at a good trim level. Twenty years is plenty of time to make the model worse. I do very much agree with the 2 silver cars in the garage approach. But, not driving because it's too hot would not leave a lot of time in the year for many Australians. I don't think you need to worry too much unless the car has actual issues with overheating. 
    • Back again. I returned to Japan in Jul/Aug to spend time with the car on my birthday and remind myself what all the sacrifice and compromise is for. It happened to line up with the monthly morning meet in Okutama, which I have been wanting to go to for a long time. It's a unique event at a unique spot with really rare, interesting, and quirky cars. It's where all the oldheads and OGs gather. The nighttime scene at DKF certainly has its place and should be experienced if you're into cars, but there's too much bad attention and negativity around it now. IMO the better time is Sunday morning at DKF or Okutama; it's more chill and relaxed. I'm glad I was finally able to go, but not sure it's worth the drive from all the way from Nagoya immediately the day before, unless I was already staying in Tokyo for the days right before the meet, because you have to wake up quite early to make it in time. Funnily enough though I didn't drive the car all that much this trip because it was just too damn hot. While there were zero issues and running temps were nominal and the A/C was strong, RBs already run crazy hot as it is. Sure, it took it all like a champ but something about driving these cars in the ridiculous heat/humidity bothers me and makes me feel like I'm asking too much of it. I'm just me being weird and treating the car like a living thing with feelings; I'm mechanically sympathetic to a fault. Instead I was mainly driving something else around - a KX4(silver) 2001 X-Trail GT, that I acquired in May. There's a few different flavors to choose from with Xs, but visually it's the Nissan version of the Honda CR-V. Mechanically it's a whole different story as this, being the top-trim GT, has an SR20VET mated to a four-speed auto and full-time AWD! It was a very affordable buy in exceptional condition inside and out, with very low mileage...only 48k kms. Most likely it was owned by an older person who kept it garaged and well-maintained, so I'm really happy with how it all worked out. It literally needs zero attention at the moment, albeit except for some minor visual touch-ups. I wanted something quirky, interesting, and practical and for sure it handily delivers on all three of those aspects. I was immediately able to utilize the cargo and passenger capacity to its full extent. It's a lot of fun to drive and is quite punchy through 1st and 2nd. It's very unassuming -in the twisty bits it's a lot more composed than one would think at a glance- and it'll be even better once I get better tires on it(yes, it's an SUV but still a little boat-y for my liking). So...now I have two golden-era Nissans in silver. One sports car and one that does everything else; the perfect two-car solution I think👍 The rest of the trip...I was able to turn my stressed brain off and enjoy it, although I didn't quite get to do as much as I thought. I did some interesting things, met some interesting people, and happened into some interesting situations however, that's all for another post though only if people really want to know. Project-wise, I went back to Mine's again to discuss more plans and am hoping to wrap that up real soon; keep watching this space if that interests you. Additionally, while working in the tormenting sweatbox that is the warehouse, I was able to organize most of the myriad of parts that my friend is storing for me along with the cars, and the 34 has a nice little spot carved out for it: And since it can get so stupid hot in there, that made it all the more easy -after I was standing there looking at the car and said 'f**k it'- to finally remove all the damn gauges that have mostly been an eyesore all this time. Huzzah. The heat basically makes the adhesive backing on the gauge mounts more pliable to work with, so it was far less stressful getting this done. I didn't fully clean it up or chase the wiring though; that will happen once I have the car in closer possession. Another major reason to remove all that stuff is to give people less reasons to get in my car and steal s**t while it's being exported/imported when/if the time comes, which leads us to my next point... ...and that is even though it's time in Japan is technically almost up since it's a November car and the X would be coming in March, I'm still not entirely sure where my life and career is headed; I don't really know what the future looks like and where I'm going to end up. I feel there's a great deal of uncertainty with me and as a result of that, it feels like I'm at a crossroads moreso now than any point in my life thus far and there are some choices I need to make. Yes, I've had some years to consider things and prepare myself, however too much has happened in that time to maintain confidence and everything feels so up in the air; tenuous one might say. Simply put, there's just too much nonsense going on right now from multiple vectors. Admittedly, I'm struggling to stay in the game and keep my eyes on the prize. So much so in fact, that very recently I came the closest I ever have before to calling it quits outright; selling everything and moving on and not looking back. The astute among you will pick up on key subtext within this paragraph. In the meantime I've still managed to slowly acquire some final bits for the car, but it feels nice knowing there's not much left to get and I'm almost across that finish line; I have almost everything I'll ever want for my interpretation and expression on what it is I think an R34 should be. 'til later.
