Hey guys, just saw an incredible video which I practically exploded over.

Mark Skaife's R31 GTS-R race car.

RB20DET-R.

Yeah I know it's rare as hens teeth. but my question is... why?

What is so different about the RB20DET-R that sets it apart from the RB20DET? And how can it rev to a billion RPM without blowing the f**k up?

Any info would rock, thanks guys.

You are looking at a race car mate, not a road car.

The road going variants and the race car variants were very very differnet.

The RB20DET-R was a red top and came in the HR31 GTS-R only. So not that many made. 800 GTS-R's were made for homologation, so 800 motors at least, but i wouldn't say there would have been heaps of spares made.

However everything that was bolted to the motors was not factory (manifold, coolers etc), so i would imagine the internals would have been of similar tweaking.

So whatever you saw in a video of a race car, was race spec, not street issue.

All RB20's with no exhausts, tubular exhaust manifolds and big turbos scream like banshee's and sound like they are doing 12,000rpm, when infact they are not.

I never said they were the same.

I said the race going version of the RB20DET-R and the road going version of the RB20DET-R were not the same.

They are not the same as a red top ECCS or NICS RB20. The turbo, manifold, ECU are different.

As to anything else, arguable, i've never seen any proof cams, internals were different in the road versions.

skaify's RACE CAR is not the same as a STREET CAR

the sodet-r is not some freak that can rev to 18,000 from factory.

just like the v8's you see at bathurst these days are not the same motors you can buy in an ss / xr8

So, same internals and shit, just external mods are different?

You could make a 20DET just as hypo using different manifolds, turbo, etc ?

I was under the impression the 20DET-R were forged differently and stronger than regular blocks like the 26s..

RB20DET-R also had a awesome cool turbo (TO4E IIRC) which had mega lag. Would be good fun to drive I imagine :)

R31House sell some form of RB20DET-R and can also supply you with a handmade exhaust manifold and Garrett T04E made to their custom specs

They also have a "RB25DET-R" motor which I have no idea has in it.

What do you mean by just as hypo?

Its been stated quite clearly the only differences are BOLT ON PARTS.

Stuff you can buy off the shelf any day of the week.

wouldnt they run stronger internals to cope with the constant strains that a race going engine would have to put up with?

Ive seen the R32 that skaife ran, its a wicked looking setup, would love to take it for a drive

Is is stupid week or something?

I wanted to know what the difference was between an RB20DET-R, and a normal road-going RB20DET. INTERNALLY.

the answer i've been given is 'nothing'. all you're saying is that the race and the street version are different - not how.

*gives up*

it has JE pistons and nismo rods for starters... followed by custom grind cams of which i dont no specs on, all wrapped up in a nissan motorsport block...

so no its not the same as your typical RB20.

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
    • Agreed, and in particular the earth strap that should go from the subframe to the chassis but it often broken or left off. There is a section in the R32 workshop manual you can follow for troubleshooting if you don't see anything suspicious, and depending where you are (there is no location on your user profile) you should be able to get your hands on a second hand replacement unit still if needed
    • Yeah they mention as a R34 for 2.5 Turbo...but then again thos "small" were also for R34 by that different site. But i look into it and that 310mm EBC is for R34 GTT. And by those you linked the specs are the same 🙂    EDIT: I found these on one site here: DBA 4000 series T3 DBA42304S They are 310mm...and it says are for R34GTT...are there good? EDIT2: ok they have pads too.  What "color" should i get for street use? I dont want/need some noisy ones...(and if they are not that dusty that is good too)
