Hmm.. i'm looking to get a 97 R33 GTR which is running 300awkw with just Power FC, HKS GTss turbos and Exhaust.

Its still using stock injectors and fuel pump.

What are they rated to i wonder?

-Mike

Mike33GTR, are you referring to the standard fuel pump and injectors? If so 300awkw would be close to the limit. If you are planning to go beyond 300awkw, then you would need to look at larger injectors etc.

I just made 330kw on 18psi with:

Nismo fuel pump

HKS dump Pipes

Kakimoto Exhaust

Sard 700cc Injectors

Power FC

Trust Drag Cooler

HKS GT-RS turbos

Nothing more, nothing less.

You could probably make the same power without the dump pipes and the intercooler

I have maxed the AFM's, but a budget build none the less.

There is a Great article in Issues 93 and 103 of High Performance Imports magazine about the essentials of making big power on a GTR.

Goodluck, let us know how you go.

Nigel.

I just spent a bit of dowwla too adding some much needed mods. Similar to above. Was completely stock then got all this in one hit.

I pulled 231awkw at all 4.

That is with the following:

1. Power FC

2. HKS GT-SS's

3. Blitz Dual Soleniod Boost Cntrlr

4. Aftermarket Dumps

5. OS Giken Adj. Cam Gears

Tuner only kept it mild as he said its pretty much on the limits with the GTR's injectors. I am installing fuel pump, injectors and cooler in the new year and going back for a re-tune. He is adament that he can get 300awkw safley.

Shouldnt have any dramas unless you're having the same problem as I do. For some reason I was told during the tune the car cant hold the boost which is why I'm running 16psi. Anything more it wouldnt hold it. Was told high chance its a dodgy wastegate but anyway, back on the topic. My mod list is pretty similiar to yours except the turbos I have are N1 which I believe are GT-SS equivalent. No cams, using pfc and pfc boost controller kit. Got 255awkw for the tune running around 16.5psi. which is around 1.15bar. Having said that, with more fuel (bigger injectors, fuel pump), bigger AFM (Nismo, Z32 or just go map sensors) and more boost, I'm sure it'll go over 300awkw.

Thats a really good result. I did shell out the extra cash early to put in dumps and do cams for a bit more response prior to doing fuel system.

It is interesting the different changes that you have got from things like AFM's and fuel compared to cam's etc.

I need to know when I can stop safely though, I want as much power as possible whilst still getting a bit more life out of the stock internals. From what I have read that seems to be somewhere between 300-350kw, anything past that things start getting too stressed.

Anyone out there with a nice power figure on an older stock motor, that is still going strong?

HKS GT-RS turbos

Shouldn't GT-RS turbos be capable of more than 330kw? Is that an all wheel figure? I thought they would hit around the 350awkw as they have a larger compressor than most of the commonly used turbo's like the HKS 2530's or the Garrett 2860-5's.

Speaking of which... Could anybody offer any direct comparisons between these two turbo setups? I have noticed that the Garrett's can be bought a fair bit cheaper. What would be the difference between the HKS 2530's and the Garrett 2860-5's?

Ash has already posted... GT-RS will make well over 400rwkw... and be laggy on a 2.6L

2530's will make around 350 - 400rwkw... or the Garrett equivalent -5's

GTSS are the right size for low 300rwkw... or the Garrett equivalents -9's

plenty of info about these turbos already on this site

Which is why I questioned the 330kw figure above.

Thank you for pointing out that one person has already posted some info.

I was just wondering if anyone had direct comparisons between the HKS 2530's and the Garrett 2860-5's. I realise they are meant to be the equivalent to each other but there must some differences however slight they may be. Is one more reliable than the other (build quality)? Is there any difference in performance characteristics? Or is it really as simple as the HKS costs more because of the name.

They are both Garrett cores, so build quality = same.

The housings all have Garrett stamped on them as well from memory so no issue with quality/reliability.

Remember the HKS kit comes with new banjo washers, gaskets, actuators etc etc.

When you buy the Garrett Turbos - you just get the turbo's and need to buy the rest separately.

You also pay for the HKS name/branding.

Overall there is i think a tiny wheel difference, which overall makes no noticeable alteration to how the turbo works or results that will be attained.

When the dollar is good the HKS "kits" are not too different from the overall price of the Garretts.

Remember you need to account for shipping, taxes and so on from Japan. Where the Garrett items are already here in the country :)

Thanks for the reply...

However, there seems to be more than a little difference with the price. So far the best price on the HKS 2530's is $4,560 plus an extra $300 for the actuators...

http://www.performance-wise.com/page41.htm (about half way down the page).

And the best price on the Garrett 2850R-5 is $2,420 including the actuators but I will need to purchase the install kit for an additional $440.

As you can see going the Garrett route, I will save $2,000!! Unless anyone can recommend a cheaper HKS dealer?

Also, just another quick question... What do the Garrett 2560R-7's compare to? Are they somewhere between the HKS GT-SS and 2530?

Ye i think so, or you can get them but in extremely limited supply. Certainly not a common item to source.

-7's are smaller than -9's (GT-SS).

Kinda a steel wheeled stock turbo virtually

I do not even think you can get genuine new HKS 2530's anymore :(

Are you saying that the link I provided is not supplying genuine items? He didn't mention along those lines when I asked a few questions via e-mail.

Oh ok... Then what about the 2860R-10's? Sorry about all the questions, I just like to get all my facts together before moving forward with any plans.

    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
