You guys can wait your 3 months for 5970 waterblocks but I've already got my GTX295 Co-Op installed :D

Yes there's always better, but it always costs more. I think I have spent enough.

for now...

fair call,

I am looking at also getting a bigger monitor and always had concerns with buying anything that requires a plug from the US.

Is it just a US power point adaptor that is required? or does anything else have to be made.

reason i ask is i race RC cars at a state level and a lot of the elctronics we cant get from US due to incorrect frequencies etc so i also carry that aspect on from ordering anything from the US

Newegg prices are good but as you mentioned you cant get them to ship to Oz is that right?

Yeah they won't ship to Aus so I went with a local distributor. CBF with all the hassles that involves. They have good gear though, and decent stock.

I don't know about the power thing exactly... I know their plugs are physically different and their voltage runs at 110 instead of 240... Most hardware has a convertor that can take either though.

A US website that one of the guy from work here uses all the time is www.provantage.com Some prices are comparable with Newegg.

I dont entirely agree though with the posts mentioned before about us being ripped off and HEAPS cheaper in the US.

Honestly, please prove me wrong as I wanted to use provantage to get a gfx card but by the time courier costs and the dollar difference is added it is only a $30 saving when i was looking at a 4890.

Plus i was always told with electronics if it is not a huge price difference buy local as it is much easier to organise returns etc. The further away the harder it gets.

Again if i am wrong please let me know as I would love to find some good cheap gfx cards :-)

Was there ever a shortage of 4890? Were they ever selling for DOUBLE the USD price while our dollar was over 92c?

Most if not all power supplies are now auto switching b/w 110V and 230V

I think one of my SSDs is farked... BIOS doesn't label it and when setting up Windows 7, it thought the drive was 950gigs... I wish.

I'm going to check it more tonight (didn't get much of a chance last night) then probably send it back and sort out the RAID0 at a later date

It's all so I can play solitaire in the best res.

I got it to work... sort of... it comes and goes. all up I have 5 HDD's, and 1 cd rom. at the moment, one of the SSDs isn't showing up and neither is the cd rom. Depending on where I plug them in on the motherboard they appear and disappear... It's not vital at the moment as I'm waiting on a 3.25 drive holder to turn up so I can mount the two SSDs...

I'll sort the RAID0 out then.

Ive had similar issues with my mobo and RAID0 and other drives now showing up.

Worked it they need to be in a certain order.

I'll look tomorrow and let you know how mine needed to be (about to head out), took me a while to figure out as the manual had nothing about it.

Once i plugged them in a certain order to the SATA ports = all was fine

yeah I dunno, I used all the sata cables I had

I had a feeling they would nee to be in a certain order... I need to figure out what it is though cause in order to get to the sata ports, I have to take the vid card out... then I can't test the cards without the vid card.

I'm having massive problems with Borderlands too... Steam thinks it's not installed and it's a 7 gig download...

If you are trying to do a raid setup on the mobo, it depends on if the mobo has onboard support for raid and sata drives, if yes, you plug the two hdds into the different colour sata ports onthe mobo usualy blue or orange, and when installing win7 and sata drives, make sure ahci is turned on in the bios, but win7 sata drives blow, so use the newest intel ones, just have them on a flash stick.

and i read the first post, not sure if you have a computer yet or not but..

I basicly use mine for the same you will be using yours

After Effects, maya 2009/2010, z-brush, ect..

what i have is, and its cheap now to build...

i7-920 @ 4ghz on true120e, makes sure you get a d0 stepping as they oc the best, but the c0 are fine for 3.7/9

gigabyte x58-extreme (i think they have the UL something now, basically the same without all the cooling bits)

2x3gb kits of of G.skill 1200ram so thats 6x2gb sticks, so you will get some some 3channel ram happening(i started with 6gb and it was fine, but when i began rendering for print, and 1080p and 4k video res's the extra ram helped, but i had to lower my clock speed to 3.7)

cooler master 1000w psu

5x1TB hhds storage and windows

2x60gb ssd one for windows and programs, and one only used as a maya scratch disk

blu-ray drive, $120, but you dont really need that, but backing up 25gb a disk beats tons of 8gb dual layers

graphics card dosnt matter for maya as its only doing basic open GL rendering in real time, unless you have an extremely heavy scene and then you would need somthing like a quadro FX, but i have 2x4870s in crossfire, they are cheap now and good enough for maya.

case, wateva you want, but you want somthing big, i have the cosmos S

all that now from msy, minus the case bluray, ssd's and lots of hdd,s should be around the 1900 mark or less, plus the new 6cores come out next year so you can either wait or buy now, dosnt really matter tho as the i7 socket will be the same so you can always upgrade..

and just so you know how much quicker the i7 is, my old maya rig was e8600@4ghz, 4gb ram, rendered a 300dpi a3 print in 26mins, the i7 stock did it in 8mins, and then 6mins when overclocked.

and you want 2x24s or even 3, i have 2x23s and 1x24, the 24 in the middle 23s on either side, you need multimonitors to speed up the maya work flow, you can have your main window in the middle and then top/side/wateva view on another monitor, same with a huge custom shelf, all depends on what you are doing tho.

good luck, hope that helped.

oh, i noticed your budget is $1500 so...

i7-920 $389

EX58-UD5 $364

1gb 5570 ati card $199

1TB Hdd $97

6gb gskill $175

1000w psu coolermaster $295

res use your old case and dvd drive and hdds and there you go, pretty neat system for $1500, everything is from msy.

f*cken awesome! thanks mate!!

i've since found out i can order through my parents company, but not like the main company, some spin-off one so i can meet the 50% rebate requirements, so $1900 is fine.

I was actually looking at the i5 750 i think, because i read that can be oc easily and relatively safely. But if i can get all the for $1900 then sweet.

Sounds like you are pretty damn serious with your work... got a website/folio to have a look-see?

so let me get this straight, you have...

23" x 24" x 23" - that's the monitor setup? dear jeebus...

with the 50% tax thingy... i was contemplating getting a 30" dell and then maybe a 20" a put that in portrait mode?

for the work you do, would you recommend a 24 x 24 setup (don't think i'll go 3 monitors) or perhaps 1 x 30" or 30" with a 20"

EDIT: are the SSD's a necessity with Maya or say After Effects?

Dont get an i5, they suck, and they have no Hyper Threading (i think thats them, or the i8) but they suck anyway, because they are just old tech sold as new plus they have some wack new socket that will be outdated soon, and yeh not too serious yet as im still in uni, but i have some unfished work on my youtube channel that i use for my lectures to give me feed back befor i hand in/fix up you can check it out here my youtube channel

but yeh, i have 23x24x23, middle screen is the good samsung, the other too are soso asus monitors, but still good

with the monitors, it all depends what you wanna use it for, imo portrait mode sucks balls as everything is widscreen these days and i dont really see what you would use it for, it would suck in maya as the tool bars are on the sides and top.

I say get 2x24 that would be a decent setup, but the bigger the monitor is the easier its on the eyes, when i have the moolah, ill get a 26 or 30inch because working in maya and ae for long really gets to you.

but what will you be using the computer for?

yeah I dunno, I used all the sata cables I had

it should be free to re-download, unless you dont have the bandwitdh

I don't see tilatech.com having ANY video cards, let alone stock of the 5970... So with the fact that it's more expensive, f**king massive, doesn't have many or any watercooling blocks, and that I can't even find one to buy, I'm going to stick to my 295 choice :(

Which by the way, was waiting for me at work along with everything else.

Hello, we have 5870 Radeons in stock and 5970 Radeons in stock now. We do ship international via UPS, but we recommend our USPS service because it is quite cheaper in comparison. We also ship custom desktops and can custom build to your desires. Please feel to shoot us an email at [email protected] for shipping quotes for international orders and if you have any questions.

    • You won't need to do that if your happy to learn to tune it yourself. You 100% do not need to do that. It is not part of the learning process. It's not like driving on track and 'finding the limit by stepping over the limit'. You should not ever accidently blow up an engine and you should have setup the ECU's engine protection to save you from yourself while you are learning anyway. Plenty of us have tuned their own cars, myself included. We still come here for advice/guidance/new ideas etc.  What have you been doing so far to learn how to tune?
    • Put the ECU's MAP line in your mouth. Blow as hard as you can. You should be able to see about 10 kPa, maybe 15 kPa positive pressure. Suck on it. You should be able to generate a decent vacuum to about the same level also. Note that this is only ~2 psi either way. If the MAP is reading -5 psi all the time, ignition on, engine running or not, driving around or not, then it is severely f**ked. Also, you SHOULD NOT BE DRIVING IT WITHOUT A LOAD REFERENCE. You will break the engine. Badly.
    • Could be correct. Meter might be that far out. Compare against a known 5 ohm 1% resistor.
    • @Murray_Calavera  If I were an expert I wouldn't be in here looking for assistance.  I am extremely computer literate, have above average understanding on how things should be working and how they should tie together.  If I need to go to a professional tuner so be it, but I'd much rather learn and do things myself even if it means looking for some guidance along the way and blowing up a few engines. @GTSBoy  I was hoping it would be as simple as a large vacuum leak somewhere but I'm unable to find anything, all lines seem to be well capped or going where they need to be, and when removed there is vacuum felt on the tube.  It would be odd for the Haltech built in MAP to be faulty, the GTT tune I imported had it enabled from the start, I incorrectly assumed it was reading a signal from the stock MAP, but that doesn't exist.  After running a vacuum hose to the ECU the signal doesn't change more than 0.2 in either direction.   I'll probably upload a video of my settings tomorrow, as it stands I'm able to daily drive, but getting stuttering when giving it gas from idle, so pulling away from lights is a slow process of revving it up and feathering the clutch until its moving, then it will accelerate fine.  It sounds like I need to get to the bottom of the manifold pressure issue, but the ignition timing section is most intimidating to me and will probably let a pro do that part.  Tomorrow I'll try a different vacuum line to T off of, with any luck I selected one that was already bypassed during the DBW swap.  (edit: I went out and did it right now, the line I had chosen did appear to have no vacuum on it, it used to go to the front of the intake, I've now completely blocked that one off at the bracket that holds several vacuum lines by the firewall.  I T'd into the vacuum line that goes from that bracket to the vacuum pump at the front of the car, but no change in the MAP readings).  Using the new vacuum line that has obvious vacuum on the hose, im still only getting readings between -6.0 and -5.2.  I'm wondering why the ECU was detecting -5.3 when nothing was connected to the MAP nipple and ECU MAP selected as the source. @feartherb26  I do have +T in the works but wanted to wait until Spring to start with that swap since this is my good winter AWD vehicle.  When removing the butterfly, did it leave a bunch of holes in the manifold that you needed to plug?  I thought about removing it but assumed it would be a mess.   I notice no difference when capping the vacuum line to it or letting it do its thing.  This whole thing has convinced me to just get a forward facing manifold when the time comes though.
    • Update: tested my spark plugs that are supposed to be 5ohms with a 10% deviation and one gave me a 0 ohms reading and the rest were 3.9ohm<, so one bad and the others on their way out.
