Hey everyone

Just put some new rear shocks in my car (Series 1 R33) and I just had a question about whether this looks right to everyone else. Is this the right way for the shock to be facing or should it be facing towards the tyre. It looks ok to me because it has the damper adjuster facing towards the diff so its easier to adjust, but I bought some springs and they had this instruction manual in JAPANESE mind you which had this picture and it looked like that metal spacer thing on the bottom of the shock is facing towards the wheel.

So Im a little confused. What do other peoples one look like? Not sure if it really makes a difference but ye.

Thanks in advance

Haha ye well I figured that much to but I looked at my brother's car (its a commodore mind you) and it had shocks with a larger spacer like mine and that was facing in the same direction as mine. I actually just also asked my mate who works as a mechanic at nissan and he reckons people there said it looks right but no one has been able to explain what the difference is.

That's why I thought if people can look at their own skylines with aftermarket shocks then maybe we can get a trend going on what theirs looks like.

How is the setup on your rear shocks Munkeyboy?

Hrmm I see. Thanks for the quick reply at least I have one other 'skyline' to go of. Did someone tell you to face it that way for a reason or did you follow instructions or ....?

Thanks again

My billies have the spacer towards the mounting point ie as per instructions.

On the front ones the billies don't have the spacer [well I didn't get any supplied] so I measured up a couple of thick washers and used them.

But I reckon they would rub if they weren't spaced at the front, the back I becuase they said and to keep the geometry right [someone had to have figured it out before, that why they say to do it that way].

Thanks for the reply tridentt150v, that looks like 2 down for facing the other way. Any other people want to join in and tell me how theirs are facing ( and make me have to pull them out again arghhh)?

They were fitted that way by my mechanic, who has done it a million times. no instructions

Ok thanks MunkeyBoy, well I decided to go down and ask pedders for some free advice and the guy there who seems like he knows what he is talking about said that it shouldn't matter if both ends of the eyelet spacer thing has the same diameter(which mine has) but if one end is slightly larger of tapered than that end should go towards the bolt I think. He said they sometimes do that for clearances or something like that. I put the front ones in yesterday but I decided to buy a washer as Tridentt did and put that in there which makes it look ok.

Thanks for the replies people, I will keep an eye on it and if it makes noises etc then I will change it and see.

    • So could it be assumed it has been installed intentionally with potentially a power FC boost controller kit?
    • Had my rig on Matt's dyno at PITS the other day. After a few years between tunes I added a few sensors and swapped intercoolers. Result. 553hp at 26psi. Not bad for an FJ20 that was built in 2007. The problem.. It filled the overflow bottle on hard runs which leads me to believe the head gasket isn't sealing. I have a coolant pressure sensor which was reading cap pressure at 22psi and occasionally overrunning to 23/24 psi on deceleration after a pull. It was not spiking. It has arp2000 head studs and a cometic gasket. As its been 18 years in service, I pulled the engine out and head off. Everything looks good but we obviously have an issue. Where I'm at.. Years ago I had the same issue, I checked the stud tension and they were all over the place. Some at 60 to 70 and some up near 90. I nipped them all to 100ft lbs and this stopped the water push until now. I believe this compromised the gasket back then. What do I do? 2 options are..  1) I bought arp 625+s, which I could put in with a new gasket. Thinking Kameari this time, reassemble and try again. 2) strip the block, get fire rings machined in with copper gasket and try that. I do not want to push it more than 28 to 30psi. I think the turbo will be out by then anyway. (G30-770). My other concern is the long term ability of a copper head gasket. Are they streetable for years? I feel like a new gasket with the new studs will probably suffice, but I don't know. Any thoughts welcome and advice on copper gaskets and fire rings. Thanks!
    • I'm a fan of the JZX110, and the Aristo. Big cruiser cars, and with the factory cars, super comfortable and feel like you're driving an armchair! And the JZ motors are a pretty nice engine too, especially with some basic mods.   The import process, and the need to be able to trust people, and the fact there's so many scammers around is what ever puts me off wanting to go through that ordeal!
    • I don't care for these at all, but at least the underside looks straight and not rusty. A good basis for a long life. Many cars from Japan have been lifted with forklifts and f**ked almost irrepairably.
    • Yes, but it's not dumb or dodgy. You can build a perfectly good boost controller from a pressure reg, a relief valve (looks same same as a reg if all from Norgren or SMC, for example) and a check valve. I ran one for years. Only superceded with  EBC because I could get one for cheaps and wanted finer control.   THis mod is certainly not a sketchy boost mod, provided the boost is kept below the "spin to death" threshold of the turbos.
