Thinkin About 1

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys. Im noob so first off if there is a page detailing all the answers to my questions feel free to direct me there and call me stoopid. I know the drill.

Ok so Im thinkin about buying an '93 R32 GTS-T. Havent owned a skyline or anything similar before so i was wondering if you guys could give me some info on running costs, maintenance issues, fuel, anythin that goes wrong with them, common problems, reliability etc etc etc. Basically anything you can tell me haha. I drove my mates one a little while ago and fell in love with it even with a dodgy gearbox and rough brakes so help me out?

Again please feel free to shut me down and tell me where to go if there's a page with all this one it.

Cheers

I have a similar question. I spoke to a friend of mine this week (works at a Nissan dealer) who told me that R34 GT-R's can be bought for as low as $22K AUD in Japan, before the compliance and registration process in Australia.

Can anyone confirm this? How much would this R34 GT-R be on the road in Aus?.....and then of course goes, what of the ownership of such a vehicle in terms of maintanance, reliability, insurance etc?

Any help appreciated...

Check the maintenance section for more info. Generally with any old cars, especially performance ones, get a full mechanical inspection done by someone who knows his stuff and you should be alright (e.g. leakdown and compression tested).

Everything you've asked largely depend on the person driving it. Some people flog it all the time whereas some other do it occasionally. To give you a rough idea, my gtr is pulling 250awkw and consume 7.5km/L or about 13L/100km. Thats with ocassional boost (not all the time but pretty frequent).

Maintenance is just about the same as any other car of the same age and as I've said before, you get what you pay for and getting it inspected is a top priority. That way you will sort of know what MAYbe failing and can budget for it or factor that into the purchase price.

Common problems are the clutch and turbo. Engine cost a bit to rebuild as well but if you get the engine tested, you shouldnt have much dramas with them.

If that $22k AUD is FOB price, you'll be looking at 1.8mil YEN mark. I find that really hard to believe a decent 34GTR will be sold at that price. Unless you're looking at something above 100,000km and maybe below grade 3 or 3.5. Anyway for that kinda FOB price you'll be looking at around $35k AUD on-road (varies a little with insurance and your local rego). A more realistic FOB price would be around 3mil YEN and thats more than $50k AUD.

Unless you can do all the repair or mechanical work yourself, I wouldnt suggest getting anything at the lower price band. You just dont know when it'll shit itself and chances are its pretty soon.

just to add (and im sure many will know more than me)

just because a car is 22k in jap doesnt mean its 22k, if you get me, you need to factor in costs related to:

derego in japan

shipping

customs in aust

compliance

aust rego

sometimes people over look these costs when they get excited :)

edit - brandon already said this above, i clearly cannot read

    • Awesome to know. I have a Series 1, and When pulling my front bumper off for the first time i realised my reo/crash bar was a bit worse for wear, and was going to try pick up a better one soon just so i can replace it. Someone is selling a full series 2 front bar and brackets for a decent price, so was going to probably reuse my brackets and install the new second hand reo/crash bar. I also have a genuine Altia body kit to do up, spray and put on, and not sure if that will use the series 1 or series 2 brackets for the front bumper, so having both will be handy, and knowing i can drill holes out to make stuff fit between series is also handy to know!
    • I should also say that the while they are different the only parts that matter are the center headlight supports and center bar from S1 to S2. The center bar will work, but the S1 has holes that clips go through into the S1 bumper. So if you were super cheap you could simply drill the S2 bar. Same thing with the side/wings. They have slightly different 'clips' but can be made to work. The center headlight brackets however, cannot. This is also where the GTR differs, which has a different center bar, and different headlight supports (to either GTT system), it also has different 'wing' headlight supports which is what I am calling under the headlight. However those CAN be made to work with the GTT Reo for a GTR front bar by a small spacer and a drill/tapping a thread into the reo because the bolt positions are slightly different. So people only really need the center brackets to go between GTT S1, GTT S2, and GTR if you are happy to do some tinkering.

    • If this, then this You can't really get away without it. There are hacks that you can do in Nistune, but things are much easier with the sensor than without it. If you're not planning to Nistune the ECU, then stop right now and add it to your plan anyway, because the ECU is going to shit the bed over the missing ABS and TC computers that it expects to see, and you need Nistune to stop it chucking all its toys over the side of the crib.
    • hey guys, so ive done a complete +t conversion using mostly stock parts on my rb20de neo r34.  Im wanting to know if a boost pressure sensor is needed? Seems like the engine cuts out when i try to do a pull and I have a feeling its because a boost pressure sensor is missing. I'm using a stock r34 rb25det neo ecu.
