Hi,

I was hoping someone might be able to give some assistance in choosing a new utility.

I had owned a 93 model Rodeo for about a year, long story short it overheaded and looks as though it cracked a water jacked in the 4th cylinder as the coolant is mixing with the oil.

I was looking at a brand new Toyota Hilux Workmate. Drive away price is $22490 for a 5 speed manual with aircon and an alloy tray. They have a They don't have any power options such as windows or mirrors but I don't really care about that.

Is there anything out on the market that can compare to the Hilux? I am a bit unfamiliar with other models but I know I don't want to buy another Rodeo.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i can highly recommend a hilux... but not the work mate.. yeh they are cheap... but you'd be better off spending the same amount on a slightly older, higher spec'd model..

hiluxs are seriously unbreakable.. and id go a turbo diesel if i had the choice, the v6 is a bit cumbersome, and feels very heavy, and the 2.7 petrol is gutless as a peewee 50.

i take it your just looking for a tray back, single cab, 2wd?? nothing else really beats a hilux in comfort vs ability.. some utes are great as utes, but drive like shit... aka, mazda b2600, nissan navara, holden rodeo.

for that sort of money, you could near have yourself a nice Holden SS ute.. very little goes wrong with them, great to drive (for a ute) very comfortable, bit of poke.. fits 2 motocross bikes in with the tailgate up.

ive had an ss before, ive had a b2600, ive currently got a 98' rodeo with alloy tray.. and i was a mechanic at toyota for 6 years.. so ive driven just about every hilux ever made.. and id have one but the rodeo is a company truck.

The tray back must fold down on both sides as well as the back so that will rule out the SS. Not really interested in them anyway.

It doesn't have to have that much power either, so a 4 cylinder is fine. The rodeo was a 2.6lt 4 banger and it was perfect for what I used it for.

since when? the one i drove a few years back had lots of power.

Hey bloke im in the same boat, and after considering every option, i have recently noticed that you can get a 06 hilux D4 diesel ( the best of the best work utes) with around 100,000km for less than 20k...

Im trying to get one myself....speaking to a few old boys these things last forever .... i think a better option than a new petrol...otherwise if u want new and cheap get the bt-50...ute, good solid workhorse 23,000 on road..Ive driven the vvt hilux and its not real flash..gutless really

The toyota also has more power than all the rest, with a DP chip your looking at 140kw and 400nm torque, decent power..

but make sure you get the D4 and not the earlier DiD model..D4 has much better engine

triton is also good for the money, with bluetooth standard..the rest should learn from this

But its high ride gives crappy handling...

are you serious?? i drove them nearly everyday for 6 years.. the gear ratios dont match the engines torque, so its all over the shop... like the ravs. had it had a 2L engine, it would be great... but the 2.7 has too much torque for what feels like a corolla gearbox.. revs out to quick without actually going anywhere.

yeh the diesel fuel thing is an issue unfortunatly... always getting diesel on your shoes, on your hands etc.. its shit.. no really... it is.

Mate i just went to test drive this car, was really nice with heaps o power...we got the price down to 18k, maybe could have got a bit more, but i wanted it for 17k at most so no deal was done...and its no good for you in bris vegas

But its my recomendation to u

Looks nice.

But for an extra few grand I can buy a brand new 2.7lt petrol with a full 3 year warranty.

Like I said, I don't care about power. I just want something cheap and easy.

I did look at a second hand hilux but the f**kwit salesman just lied through his teeth so I was very happy to walk away.

we do ALOT of towing and found both the hilux and navara to be pretty good espescially after a flash tune.... both were good (navara was my pick) but we ended up old skool 7.4 litre v8 now :P

Navara 147kw 484nm

Hilux 1472kw 412nm

this one also has electrcis and SR extras...And it was offered with a 12 month warranty..

But choice is yours, i do 80,000km a year so to me a new car soon becomes an old car so dont think its worth the xtra dough really.. the D4 is a 30k car new..to me in 4 years it would have 400,000, a new one would have 320,00..so there still gunna be worth shit buy the time im finished with it :)

mate your an idiot. mazdas new bt50 is a great ute, i put it up there with one of the best utes ive ever driven. holden rodeo's are fantastic too, and do not drive like shit at all. navara's arent fantastic, but they dont drive like shit either.

I do believe bt-50 got ute of the year or something,, good bang for the buck ute it is

, navara is just way to ugly to be seen in :D

    • A 1.5 way is a 2 way. It is just a 2 way with a less aggressive ramp on overrun.
    • The ABS and/or TCS being missing/broken will not cause the engine to misbehave. It just casues CEL to come on and annoy you. The CEL is useless if it is always on, so you have to do the things you have to do to get rid of it, so it can be useful. Being a Stag ECU, then yes, it will not expect TCS to be present. But it will expect ABS to be present and working. You will need to either make the ABS CU talk to the ECU (don't ask me what that will take on an NA R34), and make sure the hardware is working....or, you just need to blank it out in Nistune. Do not persist with the stock ECU. You will just have problems. Gte it Nistuned. Start from there. DO YOU HAVE A BOOST SENSOR? The ECU's boost sensor that it. It is connected to the loom at the rear of the coil cover. Usually rides on the firewall on an R34, but is usually bolted down to a bracket along with all the other crap at the back of the coil cover when a Neo is dropped into another car. If you do not have it, the ECU will shit the bed. So, do you have one?
    • So sadly the fuel pump etc was not it. The pump and filter is new and it is still cutting around 4000 rpm. A read something about ABS/TCS (engine is from stagea and ECU too so no TCS) and i dont know for 100% that my car has ABS. It has ABS "cube" in engine bay but i dont think it works(or at least from my braking experience). Can be something like that?  I will be driving the car next week to Nistune tuner to properly see what is wrong...
    • the Tomei LSD fluid with lsd kit. frustrated that it was shaking the car to crap and affecting everything else negatively, I pulled the diff last night, and removed the lsd carrier, could not find anything wrong, however it seem to be 100 locked up acceleration, and deacceleration, wondering if they sent me a 2 way not a 1.5??  either way I installed the stock open carrier back in place. test drove everything smooth as butter again. no shake, shutter, random, what felt like clutch slip and grab or drive shaft play, etc. something differently wrong in side the lsd. I might bother taking it apart (if possible) to figure out what's going on inside this carrier, as bought too long ago to return.  only draw back is its back to a one wheel wonder.
