Have just replaced original turbos with some 34 N1 Turbos.

I have had car for 2.5 years of which no time has been spent on the road still as import -

1st year had a body rebuild new panels paint etc etc

When first got car had a full service done new boots new twin plate clutch all new fluids etc etc

Next year car was stripped and had panels replaced new rails new glass etc etc

Last year had front turbo blow (took me a year to figure this out)

Got around to getting some second hand 34 N1s over christmas and have just done the install.

After install I found a small oil leak from the front oil banjo bolt (tweaked washer) fixd

Then I had a small gasket leak from rear dump to front pipe (front pipe seat slightly warped so flatened it out etc)

Now I have some darkish smoke coming from in between two turbos? Cant see anything from underneath

At first I can see front o2 sensor line is crossing between hard oil and water lines so maybe melting rubber but cant visually see this? Other then that Im not sure what it could be it seems like coming from below turbos? Any ideas?

My rims are off at the moment getting fixd so cant take it out for test drive and check Im making boost. From idle it sounds like car is reving fine etc.

Car is blowing little white smoke etc can this happen from stale fuel?

Im going to do a radiator flush and chuck some new coolant in.

Is there any thing else I should be checking changing?

Fuel could be year and bit old? stale?

I have done 40kms (near 2 years) since service so im guessing i dont need to do full service??

Any ideas or help would be much appreciated, This project has consumed alot of my time and I want to make sure its all perfect before I get it regod>

I assume the smoke is from oil that has leaked on your exhaust from your previous problems and is just being burnt off now causing the smoke....just make sure there are no leaks.

After being parked soo long it would not be smart to give it a service before u drive.....and ive read that fuel starts to loose its properties after 7 days so definitely drain and refill with some fresh stuff

What do u mean by a blown turbo? Did the exhaust wheel let go? If so u know what the possibilities are right?!?

Yeh I was thinking oil on some part of exhaust. Smoking starts 2-3 mins in at idle and gradually gets worse.

I was actually quite shocked that car started first turn of key and held idle perfectly which makes me believe that the fuel could still be fine but will still change 2 be safe.

Yeh Exhaust wheel let go, however this happened when car was stationary at idle etc. Car still ran fine after turbo let go, I actually don't know anyone that has blown a turbo - installed new one/s and then had engine failure due to ceramic dust ingestion. I however know people who have had there turbo/s blow and cause almost immediate engine failure.

I am confident engine is fine and believe compressor wheel let go under no load and simpley fell apart?

+1 for oil and stuff like WD on parts when you started it.

you will really need to drive it before you can be sure... just double check your work for anything thats not right and test drive.

o2 sensor lines should be in those holders that you squeeze shut, which should keep them clear of hot bits. White/blue smoke is usually oil. Check the oil and coolant levels, then take it for a smooth run which should burn off anything spilled, then check levels again (obviously dont do the coolant until the engine is cool). If all is good keep an eagle eye on levels for a while.

I did this recently and needed to nip up a banjo and drain mount which had slow leaks.

IIRC old fuel looses knock resistance to an extent.

Hey Dan sorry to hijack your thread but I think we may have exactly the same problem so I'd like to know some ideas too. Bought a 32gtr and the turbos had leaky oil seals or that's what I thought so sourced some 34 vspec ones second hand but looked to be in really good condition spent a month swapping them over and once finished the car started perfectly straight away, idled smoothly, was breathing fairly heavily out of the catch can filter but nothing excessive. Managed to drive it around for probably 1.5 hours then gave it a bit of a spirited run and it dumped a full catch can of oil out. Emptied that and it did it once more but I think it's because I had overfilled the engine on purpose (rb26 oil probs) and then it seemed to level out cause it stopped doing it. Took it for a drive the next day and no worries tiny tiny bit of smoke then two days later went to start it and once it had warmed up just blew a heap of smoke out of the exhaust on revs and decelleration too much to be able to drive anywhere tried it once more since and same deal. Just puzzled because it runs absolutely fine no engine noise or hesitation only the smoke.

In relation to this... Did you clean your intercooler when you replaced the turbos? If not there maybe oil in the intercooler and when it comes onto boost it pushes it through intercooler and to the intake plenum. When you shut the engine down the oil will sit at the bottom of the plenum and then when started, suck it straight into the cylinder and burn it.

Also overfilling an engine is not a good practise as it acutually glazes the bores and does other damage. It would be worth while maybe looking to some rocker cover baffles. These can be had for around 300 if i remember right and if you save a litre of oil every time you drive it then they pay themselves off very quickly if your using full synthetic with out the engine issues. :blink:

For the original problem. If the fuel is old it also won't burn properly and also is likely to foul plugs, etc. Because the fuel is not burnt properly will come out when the engine is hot as a white smoke. Or as a mist when the engine is started cold.

The turbos may have a bit of oil on them also so give them a quick degrease and rinse off and take it for a spin and get the car hot. Then check your work. if there are no obvious leaks and the smoke has cleared up then should be all good. hope this helps :)

Hey Matt yeah cleaned the intercooler when i did the swap did all the pipes too as they were filthy. I think that may have been the original problem as my rear turbo had a pool of oil in the intake elbow when i started pulling it apart. I'm sure that the engine is getting to its last legs and I was prepared for a rebuild when i bought the car it just puzzles me how it drove fine for two days then just started smoking like a train after sitting for two days. Someone else had suggested cam cover baffles for my original catch can problem too so prob a good idea especially if i go down the forged route just doesnt help me ATM.

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same.     • Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?  Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest. Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.

    • Yeah, I guess its pretty easy to get to if this doesn't work. Just wait till next oil change and pull it out. I am going to have to do the oil pan gasket soon and thought I'd just replace it while I was there.  Thanks
