hey guys

my r33 s1 starting to idle funny :S

at the lights it will be fine but as soon as i put some throttle on and back of quickly the revs drop past

the idle point and it almost stalls but it bring its self backup to the idle

i have a feeling it could be a aac valve needs to be cleaned

but correct me if im wrong what else can it be?

cheers everyone

Vac leak is possible but I reckon it might be timing. Make sure if the engine is getting a little older then you the advance the timing more than what the manual recommends. You might be running too lean or rich, if it's lacking high rpm performance then I'd say it's too lean. Either way don't cain it, get it checked out ASAP.

Also make sure your spark and O2 sensors are ok.

Yeah take it in somewhere man, any performance shop should be able to help or even a mechanic. However the performance shop will offer to tune it as well while you're at it. If you've got a few mods may as well go for a Nistune :(.

Otherwise just get a stock remap.

I agree. Go to somebody who tunes Nistune and ask them to plug laptop up to car and check that TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) is touching idle contact (can see this in Nistune tuning software) or go to Nissan and use Consult. If not touching idle contact (I think ECU switches to idle tables) or TPS fault code shows up, that's the problem. AAC valve is often blamed, but most overlook the TPS. TPS is used by ECU for transient throttle enrichment or adds fuel when throttlebody suddenly opens (like an accelerator pump on carb engine) and when misadjusted or faulty, ECU thinks engine needs more fuel than it does, so floods engine and revs drop. You'll notice the problem more on steep hills where engine has load on it or with aircon, etc on and moving car around a parking lot. Sometimes engine can stall out of the blue when slowing down.

http://www.nistune.com/ and then look under Workshops. Found this one:

MRC Dyno Services and Performance

26/44 Carrington Road, Castle Hill, NSW

Contact Mark on (02) 9634 5399

mrcdyno [at] iinet.net.au

http://www.mrcdyno.com.au

A decent tune and Nistune chip will cost around $750 give or take roughly but call them and ask for confirmation.

I honestly recommend cleaning the AAC valve first before you take it anywhere for a paid service. I had idle problems also and after I cleaned my AFM, upped the idle, reset the ECU to no avail I cleaned the AAC valve and voila it runs shmick now!

On the Nistune site I couldn't see any R33 boards, only R32 and R34. A modded 300ZX ECU to suit the R33 could do it but I'm not totally sure. If your mate is good with his Nistunes then I can only say he's correct since the R33 Nistune isn't an option.

check for cracks in your intercooler/silicon hoses. best way to do this would be to block off the intake and pressurise one of your vacuum hoses on the intercooler piping.

if you dont have a compressor then get some soapy water and spray it on all of the silicon hoses and look out for little bubbles.

Wesley1,

Do a search on "DIY clean AAC valve and reset idle" and there is a great post and massive reponses on how to go about it.

All the best,

Cheers.

    • My idle is set at 950rpm though - Moving the timing around 20 degrees is not really what I'd call a calm idle. That said... neither is chop, by definition. The LS ECU likes to adjust timing to hold idle as opposed to air. It'd work, but generally speaking there'd be a discrepancy in the base idle and the IACV would want to move the timing around anyway to maintain said idle. I think I'm just going to keep the timing steady anyway. Preserve my engine mounts.  My aircon is now officially regassed. As the guy was reversing I noticed my reverse lights do not operate, along with my reverse cam. This is a bit distressing, because 100% of guides talk about which wire to connect to backup cams as "the goes with the [other color] wire". Often when doing conversions. Unfortunately the R34 colour wires aren't documented Unfortunately I had a T56 Magnum gearbox with it's reverse switch, which also isn't documented. Unfortunately there's definitely not documentation for people with both of these in the one car. Unfortunately I forgot. After many hours of this, I have a reverse cam and reverse lights again. The wire going through the trans tunnel to the reverse switch had broken. Upon inspection, it looks like this one wire had about 7 spade terminals and extensions in it.. for reasons I cannot possibly comprehend. I also spent the 750 hours required to clean up the wiring behind my head unit which now looks like this: This is a monumental improvement relative to what used to be there WRT triple gauges, head unit, traction control, wideband controller, and whatever the f**k OEM stuff still exists there in various states of connectivity/needed. Next step is to check in at the Exhaust shop to see/confirm how much clearance I have, to decide what mid mufflers or 'resonators' (which are just straight through, narrower mufflers) I can add and hopefully cut out a lot of exhaust leaks, pinhole, v-band or otherwise. But first step will be to 'take a look' before the next step.
    • Fark the AFM card and Nistune, Haltech Nexus S3, DBW, cruise control, flex fuel, dis dat.
    • It's most likely the bolt/bush where the cover bolts back wore and allowed cover to move forward.
    • Still haven't put the injectors and R35 AFM in so we can tune the bloody thing for the HG highflow it got mid last year! I think I can forecast the upgrade path to a bigger twin scroll, external gate, Haltech, flex setup, Samsonas, dis dat, etc will be .... a while away!
    • Should have taken that opportunity to slot in a twin scroll turbo setup. Maybe next time.
