I'm looking for a project car to drop an RB25de into which I picked up relatively cheap. I spotted a very reasonably price R30 hatch today which I had never considered before. After some searching I can find surprisingly little information about these cars. What suspension is in the rear? How difficult would an RB conversion be? Are they notorious or something? All I've heard is that diffs can be difficult to source.

diff can be slightly harder than average to find, but really only if you are trying to find a factory lsd.

heres a tip: 720 4wd ute had a r180 diff in the front end.(nice low ratio too, 4.8) serious acceleration for a low power engine like an rb25de

main problem though with the MR30 hatch......they are ugly.(makes for a good sleeper)

cheers

ahhh the age old RB coversion thread....

it isnt overly complex to do, about 6 or so members here have done it, 20/25/30...

I think we need to get the mpderator of this sectio to make the rb convo a 'sticky' thread that always stays at the top of the list/.

Basic outline.

Use R31 engine x-member and gearbox x-member

need shortened tailshaft to suit, or a Nissan Bluebird TRX (RWD) 'need to confirm'

use RB engine mount on passenger side, l-series on drivers side

cos i havent done it myself (yet) this is all just what i remember over the last few years

if you get a Ti Hatch, you get disk brake rear end,

there are plenty of threads on here, just search...

RMR30's are not ugly. They may appear ugly to jealous bastards who have never had the joy of owning one,or two.

Also I had a 720 King Cab, never Knew they came in 4WD.

oh but i DID own one......i put the drivetrain into my c210 and chopped it up into little bits and took it to the dump.

mainly because it was ugly :)

I'll settle for this!

Better than being FUGLY as the C210 coupe is.

Wonder how you would describe the R34 Jase?

D

These looks nice, but the MR30 Hatch looks ugly. (I've wrecked one)

I'm not going to mention the C210, as you might pick on my C110 :-)

Aha awesome thanks guys does sound like a pretty good idea then. I really want to do a similar thing to a C110 but given the rarity of these things i'm sort of itching to put this motor in something.

I used to hate the look of them too tbh but the idea of IRS, P/S, and a nice reving RB25 for "relatively" little work and yea it would be a cute little sleeper :).

Also +1 for sticky. I think there should be sticky for all the old skylines 'conversion' given that RB's are a pretty obvious choice and i've seen quite a few especially in japan.

Just a comment on the pic (a few posts above).

I think the red over black colour scheme works well because it makes the body shape look less bulky. (There are some nice examples of white, silver or blue over black in the old R30 Pic Thread). A good colour scheme could reduce the 'ugliness' factor.

my flatmate has a manual hatch, its actually a really nice car to drive. the engine is so nice and smooth and the irs is like driving a big couch.

its for sale too if anyones looking for one, VGC mechanically, just lots of dints and rust in the tyre well, it will pass a rwc easy if you can find someone who doesnt mind rust lol

well i dont own any c210s anymore, but I agree the c210 coupe is ugly, but that doesnt detract from the coolness.

i like the 2door and 4door variants of the r30, just not the hatch, i think its a poor effort on nissans part.

( i like r34 gt-r, not so much the gt-t)

cheers

Just for the record ...... L series sound awesome when they're tweeked a bit.

I know you said you have an RB25 but how would you like about 500Nm + to play with?

Cheers, D

Yeah I agree L series engines are awesome. But if you had a 80000km RB25 neo out of an R34 to play with.. what would you do? :P .

Probably sell it, as I did with the one I had, along with all the go fast bits I had to go with it. But my reasons were a little diferrent to yours, as the PNV is a bit rare it was a stupid move converting it to RB, best to get a whole lot of fun from an L series.

But if your going with it, there is a guy on here, lives in Melbourne and has an R30 sedan with an RB30et in it that would give you all the info you would need.

Cheers, D

    • Hi all,  I am in the market for an R200 longnose diff out of a Z31 300ZX, or S12 RSX, DR30 skyline, or similar, in a 3.9 ratio.  Preferably a late model one with the M12 crownwheel bolts.  The only easy to find advert for one of these was my ad back in 2007 when I sold it on this forum.  I sold the diff as I had sold the car it goes to, but as it turns out, after 18 years I got the car back late last year, so now I'm looking for the diff !  If anyone knows where to find a longnose R200 LSD with the M12 crownwheel bolts, drop me a line at [email protected] - Bonus paid if soomeone comes up with the original diff (stranger things have happened !).  Cheers   Ben D
    • Hi everyone, I used to post here a bit from 2004-2013, when I owned various Nissans, in particular my S12 RSX gazelle, which was sold in 2007.  As luck would have it, after an 18 year hiatus, the car found its way back to me last year, and over the past 11 months I have had the pleasure of restoring it with my kids.  One thing that I am after in particular is a 3.9 ratio R200 LSD for it.  I actually sold the one out of the car here back in 2007 , and it would be incredible if I could track down who I sold it to, so I can see how they have progressed over the years (and to be honest, to see whether I can get the diff back !).  Anyways, hi all and let me know "where are the R200 Longnose diffs all at these days ?  Cheers Ben D
    • Arms will be the same as the G35 or 350Z, but as above, there was a change in the lower control arm where it connects to the ball joint.  That said, you can remove the ball joint cone from your old ball joints and fit them to the new ball joints.  To be honest, I didn't think the ball joints themselves were different. The main ball joint is a bit awkward to replace, you really need to remove the steering knuckle to press out the old one.  Some people have used tools to remove it in place, but it just seemed too hard to get to. If you are going to press out/in that ball joint, then you may as well just replace the bushings in the LCA and the compression rod.  You can buy the compression rod bushing from Nissan, but the LCA bushes, you will need to go aftermarket. Much cheaper than buying the whole arm.
    • Ha, well, it's been.... a bit of a journey. Things have taken much longer than I'd hoped. I'll probably put up a thread at some stage. Hopefully soon. The car's not done any kms since my update in June though, put it that way.
    • Here's the chart for fuel pressure vs. current draw, assuming your base fuel pressure is 3 bar and you run like 0.5bar boost on WOT, you should only momentarily hit 9amps here and there. (Ignore my prev post, I cannot read a chart these days it seems)
