How far can spacers bring out a wheel safely?

OK scenario... 10" wide guards, and only 9" wide rims, meaning rims woul be an inch inside the guard.

Firstly can you use spacers to being the wheel out to sit flush with the guards

and secondly, how far out can it go, ie can it be brought out about 2 inches or so? (Trying to fit regular GTSt rims under a GTR front guard without having to change rims.)

I have used spacers in the past with great results. The car felt much more stable in corners too.

Just be sure to get HUB CENTRIC spacers. These are designed with an extra little lip which make them safe to use. The spacers I bought were very expensive, german H&R hub centric 15mm fronts and 20mm rear. Car looks fat!

Hmm its either that or I buy a set of Work Rims for a GTR... hmmm I'm lookin at bringing them out about 20 to 24 mm so dunno if its worth the hassle.

Just reviving this thread as I am interested in getting 5-10mm spacers for my GT-R to make it LOOK that much tougher.

A) I know spacers are defectable but they'd never look there. Spacers don't tend to stand out too much visually.

B) So long as they're hub-centric and also bolted on to the hub they're safe.

C) They won't necessarily stuff up your geometry. In fact, according to tests with spacers in OPTION Magazine they will make your lap times FASTER. Yes. I have the magazine where they test different width spacers on track and record their lap times and times were reduced with spacers on. Now that's some good real world testing which cleared things up for me as I know my last car felt flatter through corners with spacers on.

You are limited to an extra 20 or 25mm (can't remember which) of track width, which is centre of tyre to centre of tyre, not outer to outer, but are also limited tyre width wise.

Increasing the track increases your scrub radius which puts a little extra load on the steering rack, but shouldn't break anything, and certainly won't upset suspension angles

Anyway that linked thread also discusses welding of wheels which is covered under Vic Roads website and is legal according to the standards, but back to topic, blocks are legal, spacers are not (the not bolted in things) as they limit the thread capture for the nut and a whole heap of other things us engineers talk about to confuse people.

R32 GTR's definitely need about 10mm per side as they look silly on standard wheels and all that guard overhang.

LOL, i think its because we happen to think along similar lines and share same approach to modding a car...sorry to say Geoff but you may need help, the kind you can only get from a prefessional, ive already seen a few and there is no helping me, but we must hold onto our faith :rofl:

Im all set to try some spacers if my new but wider track rims dont fit all that well :(

I'm looking for about 25mm spacers for my R34 GTR rims on my R33 GTR, they need more offset :D

$500 bucks for jap bolt on ones... can anyone give me some advice? can i get them cheaper/better?

Hey man i also had to get bigger spacers becasue of my wheel size on my cef, 17x9.5s. Yeah they stick ou like 5mm. :wassup:

cost me 200 bux for a pair of 21mm spacers. Here in sydney.

U have to send em your rim thou to match. (since your in vic)

Also had to get longer wheels studs as well. 75mm size for 6 bux each as well.

your hubs and wheel stubs and studs are usual engineered for a certain amount of stress .. hence the max of offset ppl use and what wheels are manufactured to

.... there's a point where u have too much offset and your suspension suffers greatly ... look at buying wheels with more dish .. like a +9mm offset .. as standard is about +27mm or is it negative .. i forget ...offset your rims .. not your studs

spacers are a no no ...generating more lateral stress on your stub and wheel bearing .... hence shorter life span in that regard.

time to do some digging out of an old thread...

there is a guy that has 18x8 350z track rims - I'm considering whether they'd be good for the GTR with 20mm spacers as road wheels.

What's the widest on a 8" rim? 235 I'm assuming

Geoff / Roy - what do you think of this?
