On these notes, I was interviewed on the Saturday just gone by a journalist who was given by his editor the task of writing an article on Melbourne's car scene. I gave him the responsible car enthusiast's point of view and made specific distinction between "us" and "them" (hoons, street racers etc.). It will be interesting to see how the article eventuates. What did annoy me about this project is that it had a pre-determined spin to it, i.e. the editor specified his need to interview derelicts too, carry on with the stereotypes etc. - I guess this is the sensationalism of it, for without the hoon part of the story there is no story. So whether I / my opinions are painted in good light or with the same brush as the hoons, will be interesting to see.

I was reluctant at first to help him out because of the pre-determined direction his article was supposed to take, but then my thoughts were: this article is going to be written with or without my help, we might as well give the car enthusiast side some representation and distinction so that a learned few can discover there is more to our car scene than just the hoons that plague it.

My closing recommendations were that certain young males doing stupid things is something you cannot rule out with laws and scare tactics - even if you do, after them you will have a whole new generation of them to deal with. This kind of behaviour needs to be facilitated...as much as our government would not want to invest money in hoons. For the the same and more reasons that we have built skate parks and bowls to keep skateboards away from public places, so too do the hoons need a place to vent their energy. For now they only have one evil to choose from, i.e. race on the streets. It can be done at any traffic light at any time, on impulse. Hence why it is done. But give them some close by venues with subsidised costs and although you won't entirely cure the problem you will certainly reduce it by giving people a lesser of two evils to choose from.

do u get RSI from these epic posts?

as for above winton is the only track for drifting in melb. that i am aware of its not exactly over the top 1 day a month at best and a 5 hour round trip.. it isnt ideal the government could do better.

One day when/if you have chldren, god forbid that actually happens, then you might give more of a shit about what people do on our roads. Until then, if all you're going to do is criticise the length of my posts, I say grow the fuck up.

and birds your preaching is getting old man serisouly..

I blame Grease.

Interesting. Grease...American Graffiti...great movies but they were the Fast And The Furious of their times - glorified the hell out of racing on the streets, without showing any consequences unlike F&F did. Something I forgot to bring up to the journalist and wanted to make mention of :P

Bahahah i couldnt help but comment. Ive met Mark twice and i reckon this is about the most ridiculous, far from the truth keyboard warrior description i have ever seen.

Yep - lack of events all right.

I looked at the CAMS calendar on the weekend, and there are 28 CAMS motorsport events that I can enter between now and the end of the year in my corner of the world (that's gravel only, so probably won't appeal to the straight line brigade. I wasn't interested in anything tarmac, but that would probably take care of the rest of the weekends for me).

Then there's weekday sprints and off street drag, drift, as well as AASA events.

Btw - many of these gravel events are suitable for road cars, and in fact some of them attract nothing but road cars.

But I guess the street racers are right - there just aren't enough motorsport venues or events out there.

Exactly....and I bet all the nanna's complaining about hoons nowadays loved the guys back in the 50's with their cars like the Grease Lightning :P Just goes to show that it's always been around.

It's not about number of venues or events, it's about convenience. You can line up someone at any traffic light at any time and have a race right there and then. You can't do motorsport on impulse - this is what needs to be facilitated. 24 hour drag strip within easy distance of the suburbs? Maybe. It sounds far fetched and anti-progress, but if you had the infrastructure to support it and the will of the government/public...why wouldn't it work?

Of course! The timeline goes something like this:

Man invents motorcar...man races motorcar...mother griefs.

You know how at school discos the Grease megamix always takes a hammering?

Do you reckon they'll come up with a Fast and Furious megamix for our kids?

*WATCH YOUR BACK, WATCH YOUR BACK, WATCH YOUR WATCH YOUR WATCH YOUR BACK*

that'd be siiiiiiiick

    • The rain is the best time to push to the edge of the grip limit. Water lubrication reduces the consumption of rubber without reducing the fun. I take pleasure in driving around the outside of numpties in Audis, WRXs, BRZs, etc, because they get all worried in the wet. They warm up faster than the engine oil does.
    • When they're dead cold, and in the wet, they're not very fun. RE003 are alright, they do harden very quickly and turn into literally $50 Pace tyres.
    • Yeah, I thought that Reedy's video was quite good because he compared old and new (as in, well used and quite new) AD09s, with what is generally considered to be the fast Yokohama in this category (ie, sporty road/track tyres) and a tyre that people might be able to use to extend the comparo out into the space of more expensive European tyres, being the Cup 2. No-one would ever agree that the Cup 2 is a poor tyre - many would suggest that it is close to the very top of the category. And, for them all to come out so close to each other, and for the cheaper tyre in the test to do so well against the others, in some cases being even faster, shows that (good, non-linglong) tyres are reaching a plateau in terms of how good they can get, and they're all sitting on that same plateau. Anyway, on the AD08R, AD09, RS4 that I've had on the car in recent years, I've never had a problem in the cold and wet. SA gets down to 0-10°C in winter. Not so often, but it was only 4°C when I got in the car this morning. Once the tyres are warm (ie, after about 2km), you can start to lay into them. I've never aquaplaned or suffered serious off-corner understeer or anything like that in the wet, that I would not have expected to happen with a more normal tyre. I had some RE003s, and they were shit in the dry, shit in the wet, shit everywhere. I would rate the RS4 and AD0x as being more trustworthy in the wet, once the rubber is warm. Bridgestone should be ashamed of the RE003.
    • This is why I gave the disclaimer about how I drive in the wet which I feel is pretty important. I have heard people think RS4's are horrible in the rain, but I have this feeling they must be driving (or attempting to drive) anywhere close to the grip limit. I legitimately drive at the speed limit/below speed the limit 100% of the time in the rain. More than happy to just commute along at 50kmh behind a train of cars in 5th gear etc. I do agree with you with regards to the temp and the 'quality' of the tyre Dose. Most UHP tyres aren't even up to temperature on the road anyway, even when going mad initial D canyon carving. It would be interesting to see a not-up-to-temp UHP tyre compared against a mere... normal...HP tyre at these temperatures. I don't think you're (or me in this case) is actually picking up grip with an RS4/AD09 on the road relative to something like a RE003 because the RS4/AD09 is not up to temp and the RE003 is closer to it's optimal operating window.
    • Either the bearing has been installed backwards OR the gearbox input shaft bearing is loosey goosey.   When in doubt, just put in a Samsonas in.
