Hi all. When I was driving around yesterday in the hot weather there was this pinging/rattling type noise coming from the motor when I was flooring it. Its never really done this before and I was wondering is this what "knocking" is? Is this caused by hot weather? I have an SAFCII but the knock has always remained on 0 which leads me to think I have not wired this part correctly.

Also, my brakes seem to be wearing thin. What is the part number for just the standard run of the mill brake pads or where can i get them from.

Thanks all

Andrew

Without going for a drive with you its hard to say 100%, but I'd be pretty sure the engines detonating. Its sounds like marbles rattling around or a loose screw rattling around. I would say with the extra heat, the safc2 leaning the fuel mixture out and using a stock intercooler the car's detonating. Basic fix dont thrash the car in the heat or richen up the fuel mix.

yeh thats what the sound was like. I had been driving reasonably hard for a while in the heat. Guess it twas just the hot weather. The car was normal again this morning.

THis might sound stupid but detonation is knocking right?

Good place for purchasing brake pads for R33?

Yup - detonation = knocking... detonation is NOT your friend. It is not a GOOD THING (*TM). If you hear this noise you should stop accelerating immediately. Detonation causes all sorts of problems, to mention a few - blown plugs, broken ring lands, melted pistons, burned out exhaust valves etc....

Brakes pads for an R33 - talk to Perth Brake Parts. Use Bendix Ultimate - nothing less or you will be dissapointed.

This has been a community announcement fuelled by red wine - not to say that the information is inaccurate, cause I know through experience on both counts that I'm correct! I hope it has been helpful. :D

Hi Andrew, I was sure we hooked up the knock sensor correctly, but I guess we never checked to see if there was any output. Definately sounds like knocking, most likely cause by heat soak into the intercooler, with the intake temps rising causing the pinging.

Bendix ultimate $70  :(

Woah! Where are you getting them at that price? Maybe they're cheaper for an R31? 1st set I bought were round $120 from Perth Brake Parts. Second set I got for a shade under $100 through a mate's work account at Coventrys.

BTW - just put on a set of DBA slotted rotors. Made a HUGE difference! :)

    • I've searched fairly extensively among Japanese websites but found nothing really like those skirts in your photo. The closest I got was Origin Labo side skirts however they look more 'complete' in that they have a finishing piece or tab at the rear of the skirt so it blends into the bodywork, unlike the one in your pic. For that reason I'd say the skirts in your pic could be adapted from another car and they didn't include that tab piece, or those skirts aren't copied from an existing skirt but an original design. Sorry I can't help out in regard to ID'ing/sourcing them
    • Wonder if JB Weld sponsored the event lol
    • There's a big difference between a car built with millions of dollars in R&D, and someone like yourself taking a normal sporty road car, and making it 5 times more powerful. At the same time, get a modern sports car, and you can turn them up towards the 1000hp mark a lot easier too. Also, give that Lambo another 20 odd runs, and chances are it too may break something.
    • There isn’t really a cheap upgrade here. If someone made a decent, bolt in 6 speed that holds some grunt, it would do very well. The 5 speeds suck. You can put a - OSG 5 speed gear set into it. Ratios are tall so it zaps the “zing” out of it. Had one, busted it. - PPG 5 speed gear set synchro or dog’s. Ratios are even taller. - An overpriced Getrag. Nice to drive, expensive to source now. - A sequential of some sort. Expensive, very expensive. How many times do you pop a 5 speed before you throw the toys out of the cot?
    • Yes, fair call. I don't have any special love for super/hyper cars but it was impressive to watch the Lambo line up against successive skylines without any problem at all.
