Hi everyone, i have full exhaust system, HKS dump and front pipe, trust 94mm catback, it is just too loud for everyday drive. my car made 340KW on 1.45bar, 280KW on 1bar, if I use silencer and low boost, drive it hard, will it damage the engine (maybe too much back pressure)?? i can hear the noise of air resistance when full boost (1bar) over 5k or 6k rpm.

I tried many exhaust shop, only 2 option to quiet my exhaust: 1 is change a small system, 2 is put the silencer in.

anyone give some idea??? i don't want damage the engine by using a silencer:(

thanks!

option 3, change the mufflers in the system so it isnt as loud.

no room for a mid muffler:( replace the rear one? not much different:(

i think if put a silencer is ok, nothing damage the engine, i will just put the silencer in. cheap and easy.

There is always room for a mid muffler. I know plenty of GTR's with dual mufflers.

One before, one after the diff... hell that's how it came factory!

You can fit one in, it's just a matter of finding a decent exhaust place that is willing to do it.

Or sell the Trust exhaust and have another one made. Either way it'll work out around the same price.

If you put a silencer in, you are effectively making the exhaust what, 2" maybe less? (depending on outlet size).

If you then intend to even ATTEMPT to put your foot down you are going to do some severe overall damage without question.

That much backpressure with turbo's that flow that much is never going to end pretty

Im with Titan - fix it properly.

use a couple of magnaflow resonators between the cat-converter and the rear muffler

also, Id suggest replacing the muffler if the resonators dont help.

a resonator in my system helped remove some drone

- simply 3" dump, gutted cat, magnaflow 3"resonator, kakimoto 3" straight through GTR racing muffler

definately more room in mine to add another muffler and/or resonator

OK thanks mate

so will it have some engine knock show on the PFC? or it will damage the engine without any sign?

if i put the silencer and drive normally, maybe a few foot down? is that ok?

Dude just take the silencer out of the equation! i noticed a pretty big performance decrease in my old GTT when i put a silencer in an that had a standard turbo!

Plus it sounded shit.

Have you tried breathing through a straw? try blowing as hard as you can an see how you feel

It's not about "how many times can i put the foot down with a restrictor", its as simple as do not do it

The motor & turbo will be destroyed if you attempt to plant your foot down.

Think about it. The turbos are spinning hard to produce the boost, and then hitting restriction becasue it cannot get it all out.

So literally as the others have said... use a straw...

1. Suck in through your nose fast as possible.

2. Blow out through the straw fast as possible.

Now the trick here is, you have to blow it out as fast as you sucked it in. Not going to happen now is it?

You'll blow your bl00dy eyeballs out before you get it out at the same rate as it went in. So imagine what'll happen to the motor - much the same effect.

3" exhaust is to small, forget that. You need a 3.5" - 4".

Get one custom made, any decent exhaust or performance place will be able to do it.

My twin 2.5" --> merge --> 3.5" exhaust is ~ 90-91dB. Borderline legal depending on the time of day basically.

You can have performance, and you can have a quiet exhaust.

does the PFC will show some high knock, if backpressure is big enough to damage the engine or turbo?

I wont answer that because it sounds like you want to "try" it and just "watch" for knock. Which is extremely silly.

Engine detonation isn't the be all and end all mate.

For the sake of the converstation - with a restrictor in - DO NOT EVEN COME ONTO BOOST.

That clear enough?

yeah clear enough!

the fact is i have foot down a few times with silencer, the knock is 20 max which is ok. but i can feel the power is like shit. is there any chance of engine damage by a few full boost?(about 10 times total?) hope no damage:(

mate what 3.5 catback you got?? thanks!

I use a silencer in mine when i need to drive the car on the street. I take it out for late night cruises

With it in i never go over 10psi or rev the engine out.

If you need it everyday just get the exhaust sorted properly.

yeah mate, but some time its hard to control my right foot:) most skyliner should understand it. haha

Silencer is totally fine, it will restrict flow LESS than the standard exhaust. It will change the grab point on the clutch and how much rpm etc you have to use. It will feel strange.

IMO get a varex exhaust, weld a different pipe one the engine and grind off the label. Remote controlled. Otherwise buy my ECV.

P.S dont worry you can rev the shit off it with no issues.

yeah, sure its strange. EVC is only 80mm, but my pipe is 94mm:(

HOHO,do you mean rev it with a silencer? but the huge back pressure will make some damage??

Do what i did. Get a varex put in underneath the car on flanges, then get a straight 3" pipe made on flanges and switch between the two depending on what you want to do with the car.

That way you have:

Super loud - straight 3"

Loud - Varex open

Silent - Varex closed

Bit of a pain, but gets the best of both worlds.

    • Yeah, it's getting like that, my daughter is coming over on Thursday to help me remove the bonnet so I can install the Carbuilders underbonnet stuff,  I might get her to give me a hand and remove the hardtop, maybe, because on really hot days the detachable hardtop helps the aircon keep the interior cool, the heat just punches straight through to rag top I also don't have enough hair for the "wind in the hair" experience, so there is that....LOL
    • Could be falling edge/rising edge is set wrong. Are you getting sync errors?
    • On BMWs what I do because I'm more confident that I can't instantly crush the pinch welds and do thousands of USD in chassis damage is use a set of rubber jacking pads designed to protect the chassis/plastic adapter and raise a corner of the car, place the aforementioned 2x12 inch wooden planks under a tire, drop the car, then this normally gives me enough clearance to get to the front central jack point. If you don't need it to be a ramp it only needs to be 1-1.5 feet long. On my R33 I do not trust the pinch welds to tolerate any of this so I drive up on the ramps. Before then when I had to get a new floor jack that no longer cleared the front lip I removed it to get enough clearance to put the jack under it. Once you're on the ramps once you simply never let the car down to the ground. It lives on the ramps or on jack stands.
    • Nah. You need 2x taps for anything that you cannot pass the tap all the way through. And even then, there's a point in response to the above which I will come back to. The 2x taps are 1x tapered for starting, and 1x plug tap for working to the bottom of blind holes. That block's port is effectively a blind hole from the perspective of the tap. The tapered tap/tapered thread response. You don't ever leave a female hole tapered. They are supposed to be parallel, hence the wide section of a tapered tap being parallel, the existince of plug taps, etc. The male is tapered so that it will eventually get too fat for the female thread, and yes, there is some risk if the tapped length of the female hole doesn't offer enough threads, that it will not lock up very nicely. But you can always buzz off the extra length on the male thread, and the tape is very good at adding bulk to the joint.
