Morning Gents and others...

I'm looking to relocate the batter to the boot in the S13 track warrior and I'm wondering what the ruling is on a battery in the boot when there is no partition between the boot and the cabin, as the rear of the car is stripped.

It's a standard Calcium hybrid battery, with vent holes in the little plugs where you can top up the distilled water if necessary.

In my head I think you have to have it fully sealed in the boot but with some ventilation to outside of the car, does this sound right and if so how have others done this.

searched the CAMS manual but failed to find anything on the website version.

can a normal battery be mounted in the boot of a 32. It doesn't share the same space as the cabin so is that considered isolated from the cabin? reason I ask is that I have a batt box but it's massive and can't find a nice small one to fit neatly in the corner of the boot so wanted to know if I can just mount it in the corner without the box?

Sealed from the cabin is one thing but don't you have to vent a normal battery to the exterior of the boot space? Or is that only if there's no partition between the boot and cabin?

have a look at how R34 GTRs do it. they have a little vent tube that exits through a small hole (with rubber grommet) in the boot floor. with a battery like that you would probably not have to box it. places like battery world etc have those batteries. they are basically a normal battery that are sealed on top with just one vent for overflow or gas and it comes with the tube already attached. that's what I'd use. they are designed to be used in the boot space of cars (like R33 and R34 GTR etc).

ah ok. I was thinking I could get away with it as 33 and 34's have it basically sitting in the boot. Didn't know about the different kind of battery.

yeah 33s and 34s are sitting in the boot but they are sealed on top and have an external vent/drain pipe. it's just a little clear plastic pipe about 8mm diameter and I guess they've just covered the top of the battery with a plastic cover with just the single vent hole with pipe on it instead of little vents on each cap. they are easy to find and no more expensive than other batteries of similar size. not sure if you have battery world in melb but if you do go there and ask for an R34 GTR battery and you should get what you need.

cool. personally though I'd still buy one of the batteries with the vent tube on it. they are not really any more expensive than other batteries of similar quality and size and it's nice to have the knowledge that if it does need to vent it's not going to do so all over your wiring, or surge tank or whatever. :)

see the little picture of the race car on the battery? just above it is the point where the vent tube connects. most come with the tube too. any battery world shop will supply one.

Thanks mate. I will get one of them next time or maybe even a dry cell.

Seriously, juest get a dry cell. It depends on how many amp hours you think you want but it can save quite a few kgs.

The one I got for the Silvia was from a local guy, $150, 780PCA, around 280CCA, weighed a kg or two less than what I had.

Perfect for a little 4 banger like mine. I reckon it'd start a small 6 easily enough too.

    • Not sure the US can import anything other than the C34 Stagea's, but if you can and you need to to tow, DO NOT under any circumstances get an M35 Stagea. If it is just as a family car and your country/state allows it, absolutely and definitely get an M35 (3.5L if possible as it is effectively a 350Z) over a C34.

    • Thanks for that, I'll check it all out. I can always do the brakes last anyway if its a problem.  The 16's are super cool, if they do fit I'll cruise around with them for a bit.  
    • Well, that's kinda the point. The calipers might interfere with the inside of the barrels 16" rims are only about 14" inside the barrels, which is ~350mm, and 334mm rotors only leave about 8mm outboard for the caliper before you get to 350, And.... that;s not gunna be enough. If the rims have a larger ID than that, you might sneak it in. I'd be putting a measuring stick inside the wheel and eyeballing the extra required for the caliper outboard of the rotor before committing to bolting it all on.
