Doesnt boost automatically raise when cam timing is changed via gears??

If so i think we're only seeing part of the picture as we cannot attribute those gains seen "just" as a change in cam timing but also an increase in boost

Would have loved to see a boost plot on this graph too

peak boost wasn't changed. 15psi before and after. i've posted the power v boost graph before I'm sure. someone better than me at searching could probably find it. as the man said, it may bring boost on earlier so it hits peak sooner but it didn't change what that peak was.

I wasn't running stock actuators. I was running HKS actuators and a profec B II and peak boost didn't change. only thing changed was the cam timing. the EBC kept the boost where it was.

  • 2 weeks later...

ok quick update on mine if ppl were curious...

front pipes (big fat mofos) are in

aftermarket cat is in... its a justjap item (it hasnt been bashed out)

3.5" exhaust in

the car still has its original tune so there is not much difference in lag.... i think there seems to be less lag in on/off throttle response

gonna wait till i get all the other stuff (cam gears, injectors, afms etc) before retuning

new exhaust will def provide more power tho... straight after the exhaust was done the car started backfiring and misfiring at high rpms

time will tell :)

Some place on ebay is selling dash 9's WITH actuactors for 2250 total delivered, pretty cheap.

Or if you are really keen they can be purchased from the U.S for a good price with the dollar nice and strong, only issue doing this way would be shipping costs.

Note: These turbos are more commonly called GT2859 rather than the GT2860-9, so try that when searching for suppliers.

PM 6boost.com, Matt's pricing is pretty sharp and a local supplier/support.

Cheers,

Getting mine through 6boost pricing is very good and really good to deal with!!! Just FYI stocks are low of the -9s in Australia so you will be looking at a 3month wait if not instock!!!

Lucky mine are in the mail :P

I think you're nearly better off buying the HKS GT-SS kit. Comes with all gaskets and studs, so when you add the price of turbos + actuators + gaskets/studs the HKS kit is pretty on the money for a better item

With the price I paid I got everything including gaskets for alot less then the GTSS kit which is the exact same turbo just with HKS stamped on it, but each to their own I guess I'm happy with my purchase!!!

Well since there is NO info on this here I just thought i'd put this up and update as I go along.

The comparision below is results for the -1 turbo which is the -9 that comes with a 8.8psi actuator from Garrett, compared to stock R33 Gtr turbos.

post-42272-0-01856100-1318371152_thumb.png

The top window is the -1/-9 which reaches the same level of boost(13.3psi) about 200-300rpm later than the stocks, and the car drives basically the same as before.

The ONLY thing changed was the boost level was raised only one notch on the controller (profecb2) to get the same level for comparision....start/gain etc was left the same and the pfc tune was untouched.

My boost control kit reads 1psi low for some reason, hence 13.3psi

Ignore the scale on the bottom as this would be different due to the length(secs) of each log

Good job Don Dada, always good to see the actual evidence.

I am in the same boat at the moment.

My car made 233kw with the standard turbos, full exhaust, power fc, cam gears and profec2. I have just installed -9's last week and have been driving the car to work and notice that these turbos come on a bit later -200/300rpm later, although this is on the same tune. The car pulls a touch harder but really don't want to rev it hard at all, so without a tune it is hard to compare turbos.

I do think there is massive potential to be had just from the tune + cam gear setup and believe these turbos can give boost response as good as stock. The car was previously tuned by JEM and will be back in there next week for the new tune in which I want to get as much mid range as possible, because I am not overly interested in revving the ring out of the engine just to pull an extra 10kw and blow it to pieces.

I will have definite results and comparisons at the end of next week. Should be interesting.

Well 'seat of the pants' the old turbos pulled hard at 3500-3700 @14.5 psi, so the newer -9s don't have much to beat especially if setup purely for boost response and mid range torque, rather than peak power. We'll see.

when are you gonna put it on the dyno don dada ?

Dyno tune will be a while still when I'm ready to adjust the cam gears.Until then its road tuned

N1GTR.. Technically the only thing new about this is the actuators, and I'm sure if you purchaced -9 from gcg etc. they would put on the same 8.8psi actuator like what I got. Otherwise, same -1 / -9 / Gtss unit.

I think response can be tweaked further with the tune and also with boost control as there is no creep and very minimal spike(1psi) as is right now, so definately some gain to be have there, even if minimal.....and then there are cam gears

Have only been driving it a few days, but it does pull a touch harder on 13psi, But so far I'm satisfied that I have turbs capable of 300rwkw with stock like response.

    • I've looked up the parts number (41011AL501). It's around $700 OEM. Usually our Infiniti G35 here in Canada have interchangeable parts with my Stagea but the parts number are not the same. I have looked around and it seems the JDM 2005 V35 Skyline (which is the same as our G35) has the same caliper but I cannot confirm. And I can't find a repair kit. The inner brake pads drags on the rotor, seems to be rusty piston. Thanks for the info by the way
    • This coupled with 6-9 speed autos with ridiculously short gearing is why these modern shitbox cars always seem so fast off the line. If it wasn't for those things, Raptors would not seem fast. The problem we have is there is a driveability gap between a more gentle take off and a wheelspinning sideways launch. The difference between ankle flex required to achieve one and ankle flex required to achieve the other is about 0.5°.
    • Yeah I think I'm also with the opposite here. It's 'hard to keep up with traffic' because in the real world I'm accelerating with 15% throttle and they are pinning it. It feels like I'm being an overt dickhead at anything above 15% throttle, so the car sounds like I'm being an overt dickhead to keep up with/get ahead of traffic when I'm really just trying to drive with traffic. There would be no issue 'keeping up with traffic' if we used the same level of throttle input/aggression to drive around. People really do just drive around with their foot nearly pinned in econoboxes.
    • To be fair it's the other way around. 300kw is boring in a modern Golf or BMW. They are so competent / well-engineered / devoid of emotion that you have to go stupid fast to feel anything. Whereas the <300kw RB still makes all the right noises and it feels good to drive. Can pull off at the lights with the turbo whooshing and the blow-off pssshing and feel like the coolest kid on the block. Just don't look to the side where you'll see the bored housewifes in their shitbox Yaris/Corolla/Camry that kept up because you didn't go fast at all
    • 300kW is so boring in a Skyline, you'll get spanked by someone's mum's Golf with Alibaba pipes, and an email tune.
