im looking to do some turbo mods fairly soon....

so far ive looked at a kkr430 (heard mixed stuff bout them...

ive heard they will hit full boost at around 3k on a 25... (seems a little low to me?)

a garret 3076r... is this going to be too big for street... do i really need somthing this big... also not tooo cheap..

or a highflow of my stocker to save rooting round...

feedback from ppl whould be great :P

Do you want response or do you want the max power your stock internals can handle

Answer that question and that will help determine which turbo you pick.

I went the gt3076r .82 IW. Will push the internals to the max, but you do loose some response

Allow relistically $3k for ALL the parts required to fit one of these.

I went kkr type on the 30 because I wanted cheap and responsive.

the turbo I have is pretty small for a 30, makes 250kw@16 psi at about 6000rpm and chokes after that.

like Darrin said it really depends what you want.if you are after the most efficient cutting edge stuff, go the garrett ball bearing option

... After turbos in I'll put z32 and inj in to be nisstuned

I'm thinking it's either hiflow or kkr, what would I expect to pull with either turbo at 14 15 psi?

I'm after response I rekn... How often to you spend at 5500+ rpm on street lol

The big thing I found after my turbo upgrade was the need for a higher stall converter. The auto box really excentuates the increased lag over the stocker. I know track times don't really matter to some, but I was quite stunned when I went from a 1.8 60ft to a 2.3.

The upgrade path is pretty straightforward I reckon a hi-flow is probably the most logical step as there is the least time messing around.

GCG hi-flow, Hypergear Hi-flow, HKS GT-RS, HKS 2835ProS, GT3071, GT3076 are all options each with its own pro or con either based on price or result. Some will need additional parts like dump changes, spacers etc.

I may have a HKS GT-RS kit 2nd hand for sale or a HKS 2835 ProS kit (with a brand new cartridge installed) once I decide which one to keep.

To an extent, yes.

Some people, in the LS1 community, have reported small drops of a few KW's on their dyno figure when upgrading to a higher stall. But really, a dyno is a tuning tool and a difference of a few KW's may just be the price you pay for abit more driveability.

I have a kkr430, it's winding up about the time the stock one does but hits full noise maybe 3500?

I find it a bit laggy, though that may just be attributed to my way-too-large throttle body, but on a smooth acceleration it melds you into the chair quite nicely.

As for power, I've wrangled 270bhp with all the supporting mods and an exorbitantly priced ecu.

Adam, a HKS 2530 would be just what you're looking for IMO.

Very responsive and about 180 awkw @ 10psi with more boost to wind into it, with your kind of mods. I've got 204awkw coming out of mine with 11psi (manual trans) ... about to wind it up to 16psi when I get it on the dyno soon with an aim for (hopefully) the 240awkw mark.

You still haven't stated your target power but since you have the Z32 afm and the massive injectors you may as well go for 260 -270awkw.

In my opinion the KKR and 2530 won't hack it.

On a budget Hypergear will build you a turbo to do the job or the GCG highflow will make it or if you can get Wolverines 2835 pro S that will do it. If I were in your position again I would buy a GT3076 lowmounted ...that would do the job with capacity to spare.

p.s if you blow the auto people converting to manual generally end up giving their auto boxes away unless they have been modified

pps get a GTR manual box later!

I wouldnt do the kkr .. . .. perhaps on a r32 hacker but not the S2 stagea.

a secondhand 1grand hks-2530 / new $1300 garret gt2860 or gt2871 equivalent would be fine for 230awkw with great response.

fueling would be fine with the injectors/z32/nistune.

**** just noticed - no aftermarket fuel pump listed - what have you got in there atm?

to max out that fueling the GT3076 would be perfect as per above comments from kiwirs4t

perhaps come for a drive with me to see how the 3076 feels. it isnt that laggy tbh, but enough so to notice. she's a heavy car tho

as it is I really enjoy the gt3076 "highflow" with a flowed head & poncams - Id say with a dirty-30 bottom end it'd be the bees knees

Im nowhere near maxing out the turbo from Bill at ATS, another 10-15% in it left, due to the Toshi remap ecu / Aem Fic-8 holding it back as well as sticking to 450cc S15 injectors.

I'll have to wait for the rb25 nistune option (if it ever comes out, or grab a Vipec ECU) and some 660cc injectors to make the most of the turbo Ive got.

Plus some gearbox work, however as-is the box is fantastic! service & shift kit from MV autos for now.

So, anyways, for you.......

Nistune, fit injectors and z32 afm, fit HKS-2530 or Garret GT2860 for excellent zippy response, bit restricted uptop of powerband, 230-240awkw is possible

fit HKS 2835 or Garret GT3071 for perfect mix of response and power, 250-260awkw is possible

fit Garrett GT3076 for more topend, 270awkw is possible on unopened Neo motor.

Once you get to the 250kw mark, think about a good thicker multi-layered steel headgasket, and excellent oil & water cooling, and a Bosch fuel pump

i do have a walbro 255lph fuel pump sorry forgot him!

i think the PU version of hypergears highflow will be the option i take... .82 rear housing (.64 on normal highflow)...

shouldny be too laggey i dont think... im more after mid-range tho i think. lets face it how often to we spend at 5500+ rpm... for the sake of a few top end kw's and boost hitting at 750rmp lower... maybe the .64 option is better?

also being in adelaide we have ALOT more cop dramas than the rest of the states.... keeping it "nissan :whistling:" would be a wise path i think.... plus it will still get a decent $ when i decide to move on.

    • Check the injectors flow evenly, and are actually flowing what you and the ECU think they should be flowing. If it's starting up on starter fluid, you have a fuel issue. Is it possible under cranking your fuel pump is turning off?   The harness you replaced, is that the whole engine harness? Do yourself a test, and drop the old harness on and plug it into the Z32 ECU. It's possible they've wired things different. From memory S1 to S2 is different in RB25 and you may have a wrong loom
    • I haven’t pulled the injectors to watch them spray yet but they are clicking from the cas and all of the spark plugs are wet with fuel. I’ve thought the cylinders were being flooded from the beginning and was hoping fuel pressure would fix it. Tonight I am going to pull the rail and watch the injectors spray. Don’t know how to test/diagnose if the plugs are firing in correct sequence but that should be a timing thing and as far as timing goes my car still has the half moon for the cas can only install it 1 way. And my mechanical timing is 100% correct I posted photos above. Confirmed with the balancer on and off. 
    • I checked spark on all cylinders and they all visually have spark with the plug pulled and grounded, but plug 1 is the only one that fouled. This was a running swap that blew up and was rebuilt by a machine shop, put a new wiring specialties harness and did all gaskets, studs, and bolts while it was out.  compression is 135-150 across all cylinders. Aside from that from my understanding with the z32 ecu and maf the car should start regardless. The wiring for TPS and the dual 02 sensor/ dual knock sensor stuff shouldn’t actually stop the car from starting or even running well, (just slightly rich)  they just give fault codes. Car supposedly is supposed to start as long as you have z32 afm and ecu with the nistune base map and that’s info coming from a well known and trusted tuner who does a lot with SR/RB (Rsenthalpy). After more trouble shooting today where I’m at right now is that the cas is sending signal to the injectors they click while spinning the rotor, Fuel pressure is now set at 43psi, all cylinders have good compression and all of the plugs looked great (just wet with fuel) except for cylinder 1 which was very black (cylinder 1 has 150psi compression). all of the coils generate spark if pulled out and grounded out on the head. On the fuel pump car just pops into the exhaust. On starting fluid car will fire off. Hard to tell if all cylinders are firing off but definitley a couple. sounds like all of them but it’s only for 3-5 seconds hard to tell. 
    • Final update!!! Got the front bar fitted and sprayed and all sorted now. My cutouts worked great and the indicators aren’t just falling off. 😂
