1998 R34 GT-T

  • Full 3.5 turbo back zorst with dump
  • High flow pod filter in cold air box
  • Manual turbosmart boost controller set at 12psi
  • Lowered on adjustable coilovers and sitting on lightweight volk 18s

Hi all, looking at getting a Nistune type 4 board for the above car (stock R34 ECU) got qouted $282 from Nistune.com in Adelaide. Does anyone have Nistune on R34 with the above mods or similar??

If so, what are their experiences / recommendations?? Is it a good thing with a nice tune?? If so, how long's the average tuning time - I'm just looking for a daily streeter with a sharp punch.

Any cheap but good tuning workshops in Sydney (I'm in Parra) - dyno guys who have Nistune exp and know their stuff??

Noob question - I have my stock turbo - is 12psi too much?? I've read varied opinions some say keep it 10, others say max 13 or even 14, but I know they blow at 14, so is 12psi okay??

I had mine with very similar mods running on 11psi with the NIStune. Really happy with it!

Does everything and was a quick tune because it's already got the base map there to start with. I got 216rwkw i think on that setup.

Now last dyno was at 266rwkw with turbo, afm and injector upgrades, it's higher now but i dunno what it's at atm... NIStune doing a great job with that tune as well :thumbsup:

Best bang for buck by far when it comes to ECU's

it really depends on how rich or lean your car is. if your running really lean on high boost for those turbos then it will blow from getting too hot.

r33 stock turbos are quite finicky. if you really like your turbo id suggest investing in getting it hi-flowed and then you wont have to worry.

Im running a Nistune,

3inch exhaust turbo back, FMIC, Stock turbo..

boosted to around 16psi ( i know what your going to say!!! lol )

Car went from 150ishkw to 221KW. Massive upgrade.

Im not to worried to much about the turbo as its not my daily driver and i want to upgrade the turbo set up

I got mine done down at Envy Imports at brookvale, totally happy with it,and the guys down there are awesome.

I dont intend to do additinal mods like turbo/injector/fuel pump etc, just guna keep it at stage 1 mods. And 'Random_I_Am', did u have any flat spots before Nistune and did that get cured after? Hows the car to drive before and after Nistune?? Differences, response etc.

My rule of thumb is you don't need a bigger intercooler unless and until you get a bigger turbo.

i put on a fmic, made a massive difference with throttle responce, then put a exhaust on, helped it flow alot better.

Nistune is a awesome unit, id hate to be the one putting the boards together.. have to soldier 36 or 40 pins to the main ecu..

yeah the flat spot was tuned right out with nistune, unless of course the flat spot your feeling is coil packs... but you'd surely know about it then if it was.

car went from memory 180rwkw before, then after the tune was 216rwkw. and smooth as hell :P

i had blitz FMIC beforehand.

the unit really isn't hard to solder up either, i did mine in well under an hour...

Wow Random_I_Am, ur saying u got like 36Kw power gain with the board and tune, thats awesome, I dont have a fmic,. and EJD001 you getting a massive gain in throttle response could be something to do with you running 16psi? 16psi on stock turbo and you still going sweet, makes me kinda relieved as I thought my 12psi was a bit much.

From what I'm hearing the stock cooler is good for 200rwkw max (or is it 220rwkw??) and a lotta people with the same mods as me are seeing around the 220rwkw mark with a nice board n tune which I dont have yet..

So still dunno if I should bother with a fmic, as I heard it also creates lag with the longer piping. Are the return flow ones much better? :P

My car is booked in for tuesday to get nistune installed and tuned i will get it back on wednesday will let you know how it goes

There is no more lag with a FMIC i don't reckon... I used a Blitz Return Flow type and if anything it felt more responsive than the stock one?

as for gaining 36kw, They were off the top of my head. I just had a quick look and i got 214.6rwkw on 11psi.

When i rolled in the AFR's dropped straight off the chart it was so rich with the factory ECU.

Well thing is the actual board just by itself no software ect only costs 260. For 460 i think you also get the software so you can tune it yourself.

I have been quoted between 770-850 supplied fitted and tuned. The variation in price is dependent on if there is any major issues that take a long time to work through (particularly when it is getting tuned) at least that is what he said even though i will happily pay 850.

Another very happy nistune user here. Just front pipe back exhaust, 10psi using turbo tech bleed valve, trust turnflow intercooler made 190rwkw. Seemed a bit low compared to others, but car drives very very well! Super smooth. Been almost a year now and have had no issues at all.

$460 I think is for the software licence (which you dont need ) plus board - the tuner should have the software; for the board alone I was quoted $282

Correct, the $460 is for a Type 4 board AND a single User license, you only need this license if you want to tinker with your car after its' been tuned (or you want to tune it yourself).

Edit: Can someone with a MANUAL R34 GTT, give me the part number for their ECU please? I need to order a board for someone that has lost the sticker off their ECU.. it will be a 27xxx-xxxxx kind of number.. TIA!

    • I've looked up the parts number (41011AL501). It's around $700 OEM. Usually our Infiniti G35 here in Canada have interchangeable parts with my Stagea but the parts number are not the same. I have looked around and it seems the JDM 2005 V35 Skyline (which is the same as our G35) has the same caliper but I cannot confirm. And I can't find a repair kit. The inner brake pads drags on the rotor, seems to be rusty piston. Thanks for the info by the way
    • This coupled with 6-9 speed autos with ridiculously short gearing is why these modern shitbox cars always seem so fast off the line. If it wasn't for those things, Raptors would not seem fast. The problem we have is there is a driveability gap between a more gentle take off and a wheelspinning sideways launch. The difference between ankle flex required to achieve one and ankle flex required to achieve the other is about 0.5°.
    • Yeah I think I'm also with the opposite here. It's 'hard to keep up with traffic' because in the real world I'm accelerating with 15% throttle and they are pinning it. It feels like I'm being an overt dickhead at anything above 15% throttle, so the car sounds like I'm being an overt dickhead to keep up with/get ahead of traffic when I'm really just trying to drive with traffic. There would be no issue 'keeping up with traffic' if we used the same level of throttle input/aggression to drive around. People really do just drive around with their foot nearly pinned in econoboxes.
    • To be fair it's the other way around. 300kw is boring in a modern Golf or BMW. They are so competent / well-engineered / devoid of emotion that you have to go stupid fast to feel anything. Whereas the <300kw RB still makes all the right noises and it feels good to drive. Can pull off at the lights with the turbo whooshing and the blow-off pssshing and feel like the coolest kid on the block. Just don't look to the side where you'll see the bored housewifes in their shitbox Yaris/Corolla/Camry that kept up because you didn't go fast at all
    • 300kW is so boring in a Skyline, you'll get spanked by someone's mum's Golf with Alibaba pipes, and an email tune.
