Nistune is a fantastic piece of kit, an arguably 'safter' than the pfc given what's been discussed already. Obviously your tuner is going to be the biggest safety factor.

My car has E85, 98 maps, no issues with either - we even got the Nistune guys to dig up the references for cold start enrichment etc to play with the E85. Helps when the developer has the same type of car :D

Next step might be to get a ethanol content sensor installed in the fuel tank, and have Nistune load up the appropriate map depending on the level of ethanol detected (this is with regards to Caltex's E70 - E85, depending on the time of the year)

Definitely give my thumbs up to Nistune.

So what's the go with Nistuning RB25s in the sense of using the VG30 computer? I've heard you need to change about 5 or so wires - but the VG30 ECU supports VCT? I still have the ECU from my RB20DET but if VG30 will operate everything I might aswell sell the 20 ECU and get a VG. When they say Z32 VG, do they mean DE or DETT?

Any reasonable electronics repair shop should be able to resolder the SMD components.

Wow thats really helpful Nick, although Im a little confused about the very last one with the injector pins. How is that done? (Inside the ECU, or on the loom)

The injector signals are changed by swapping the wires in the loom. Although since the RB20 ECU runs batch fire you don't necessarily have to swap them.

Also the VG30 ECU's are the same for DE/DET and Auto/Manual as long as it was an early 8 bit one then it'll be fine, apparently they went to 16 bit later which won't work with the board. I just sold one for $150.

We found that injector wires dont need swapping for RB20/VG30 ECUs with the RB25 so that information is now redundant

Whilst we could do this mod with the USDM 16 bit ECU (Type 3) we would need to redocument the mods and also the mapping information is a bit thin for these ECUs compared to the more common 8 bit ECUs (EDM, JDM and USDM 1990-1992 models)

So the z32 VG30DE is fine to use as a remap ecu for an r33 s1 rb25det?

nvm, found out that all z32 ecus are ok to use (be it na/tt/auto/manual) as long as they got this in the part number which makes them a type 2 board:

Nistune is great, cost effective, virtually undetectable and fully programmable.

I don't think I can add much to what's been said, except to say that I ran the Nistune board in my RB25DET Neo R32 and had a reliable 190rwkw all day every day. Stock turbo, injectors, airbox, GTR exhaust, Z32 airflow.

Had one occasion where I lost all boost and the ecu pulled timing, but I soon identified it as the plug from the knock sensor being loose. Clipped it back on and she was sweet. PFC wouldn't have pulled any timing or dropped boost.

Re the pfc and hand controller, If you use the nistune you can plug in one of these http://www.ecutalk.com/consultlcd.aspx - monitors your injectors, temps, afms voltage, timing, rpm etc. Stores peak values and has configurable alarms for maxing out your afms, injectors, water temp etc.

Not all the functionality of the PFC hand controller but most of what most people need. Also it's got a USB socket so you can plug in a laptop and log all sensors to csv with the free ecutalk software.

I've got one in my bnr32 and it is a great companion for hard track days.

+1 nistune scrap my emanage post croydon racing developments are gonna tune mine with the nistune as the PFC is good and yes you get all the fancy stuff but the nstune runs on factory softwear rewritten with modern up today's software... More control over whole system as you get to refine more areas of your engine.

Depends on what you really want to spend. NIStune's are around $250 or so, whilst Power FC's around the $800-$1000

NIStune, is just a motherboard, which allows your stock ecu to become completely programmable.

Power FC's are a whole new computer, with hand controller, so you can do 'on-the-spot' programming.

NIStune's are not legal, and neither are Power FC's, advantage of NIStune would be that it is virtually impossible to detect from a coppers point of view, apart from the USB port that is made to allow the USB cable to plug into the laptop to tune,whilst a Power FC is recognisable from its Apex'i casing. Hand Controller is detatchable..but still, if a cop wants to have a look inside your kick panel, you are a sitting duck.

... the Nistune daughterboard cards sit physically inside your ecu casing, not just in the kick panel.

Just put one in my 34gtt auto, will let you know how it goes.

    • There's restrictor pills in the stock boost control hoses. That's how they set the amount that was bled off and hence the "high" boost setting. The usual mod in the day was to remove it and send the "high" boost setting up to about 14 psi.
    • Thanks Duncan, that's the best info I've read. Furthermore after learning about the PCM programming side controlling the factory boost solenoid, the purpose of the solenoid is to "bleed" boost when pin 25 is earthed, thus allowing spring pressure in the wastegate actuator to overcome diaphragm boost pressure, thus closing or reducing the position of the wastegate flap creating more boost as the turbo is able to spin faster. It's pretty cool to see a designated Pill to do exactly this, would have liked to have seen it with a tiny filter over the end for those moments in vacuum.  The constant bleed pill has now been removed completely from the system and solenoid boost control has been restored once again.   Case closed 😂
    • The wideband reading is meaningless if it's not running. Why are you using shitty old sidefeeds on any engine, let alone a Neo? What manifold and fuel rail are you using to achieve that? Beyond that, can't help you with AEM stuff as I've never been their ECU/CAS combo.
    • Manual boost controllers (where a little of the boost was bled off) were quite common back in the day, because they were cheap and easy. Generally they had a manual adjustment screw rather than being fixed like yours. Down side is they always bleed boost, not just when you want them to so an electronic boost controller that uses a solenoid will have less lag.
    • Hello , im new here and i have A31 home build  RB25det neo stock eng / turbo  aem ems 2 blue connector  aem 3.5 map aem cas disk aem wideband connected to ecu  355 lph pump 550 nismo yellow injectors side feed aftermarket regulator  and won’t start with base aem tuner basic tune eventually flipped cas 180 degree so it triggers on correct stroke not in exhaust cycle  Now it won’t start Wideband reads 10 and 11 at lowest fuel setting  and will share calibrations soon for aem tuner i think something is wrong in aem tuner    please if you have any information, am very grateful
