The South Australian government wants to make changes to our liquor licensing laws

which will have a serious impact on the way we all enjoy our night out in Adelaide. 

Some of these changes have already been tried interstate and in other parts

of the world and it has been shown that they don't work!

In fact cutting back trading hours for outlets selling liquor more often leads to negative consequences.

In Victoria the police union even questioned proposals for a 2am lockout aimed at reducing opening hours for hotels in that city's centre, calling instead for more police to boost foot patrols in the city.

Even former Consumer Affairs Minister in the Rann government, Jennifer Rankin, agreed that "any

lockout would impact not only on young ones enjoying a night out, but all age groups". How true.

So why has this government now changed its mind?

All of us in the CBD and the West End support whole heartedly a safer environment

for visitors to the precinct. But this safer environment won't be achieved by changes to liquor

laws and trading times. It is simple... we need more police in the area to protect and support South Australians enjoying a night out.

The people wanting to make changes to our licensing laws do not understand that

young people today often don't venture out until late in the evening.

To reduce opening hours of licensed premises flies in the face of this social norm.

The trouble is that many of the people wanting to make changes to the law are already in bed

by 9pm and don't understand this modern trend to go out late and stay out late.

South Australia will slip into the dark ages of prohibition and six o'clock closing if hotels are stripped

of their 24-hour trading licenses. It would also have a devastating effect on our tourism industry

...undermining all the efforts of our state to shake off its 'nanny' image.

So please join us, as united we can ensure that the Government hears what we have to say... after all,

we are the people and the Government is supposed to represent what

the people want - and not their own agendas!

Early lock out of clubs and pubs just causes chaos in the city with drunk people everywhere walking the streets with no where better to go but go walking around looking for fights. It doesn't work interstate and won't work here, especially since all our main pubs and clubs are centered on one single road - around 2am hindely st and surrounding main roads will be absolute mayhem. They'll trial it, people will get bashed, stabbed, etc and then hopefully they change it back

putting a drinking curfew only encourages binge drinking, it doesnt prevent it

case in point, back in the old days there used to be a happy hour from 5 to 6pm, when they could sell beer - after 6 it was prohibited

all the workers would cram into pubs and drink as much as they could in that hour, before ambling home

same thing will happen.... people will drink harder and faster before the cut off time and then end up being expelled onto the street, drunker than what they would otherwise be

but hey, this is ranns nanny state. im not surprised anymore

Was tried in Melbourne and just made things worse, so they removed it and put more police on the streets. Go over there and walk the streets at 3am... You'll find at least 6 cops on each street along with heaps of cars on patrol. They also do constant license checks of the venues.

Although, those license checks aren't the most reliable way of checking on things as I've seen first hand.

Closing places at stupidly early times will simply put more people on the streets. What do they think will happen? The club will close and everyone will be like "Oh! Home time! I can't wait to get home to go to bed!" I don't think so.

In saying that, if you keep to yourself, you should be fine. Don't be a drunken idiot on the streets.

No wonder Adelaide's nightlife is dying on it's ass along with tigher venue restrictions and making it incredibly hard and expensive to get a liquor license. It's been going downhill for at least 2 years now and will continue.

i agree town has kinda gotten a bit scrappier with more idiots around, but i doubt that a curfew will make it any better, it'll just make more idiots on the street drunk instead of inside.

this has been in force in most US states since the dawn of time. and I agree with it ,too many "fighting" drunks around way worse in Australia then USA .

not sure why everyone needs to drink and fight, what happened to happy drunks ??

in most cases you just stock up on booze before you hit the bar's if they shut out at 2am anyhow.

police love it, they sit outside bars at 2am shut time waiting for drunks to put the keys in the car.

too many drink /drugged up drivers here too.

just be glad you don't live in Utah, a dry state on sundays with blue laws on booze/car sales, etc.

or places with curfews on kids ??????

and don't get me wrong I like to party as much as the next guy(kadina...lol) but the amount of stupid crimes against people and property is ridiculous here, fueled by the drugs/drunks in most cases at that time of the night.

Adelaide is still trying to be a country town, closed after 5pm.. and more laws won't fix the idiot problems

I avoid the city after hours because of idiots,fights,etc, ,,,, which sucks cause I'd like to party without hassles till late

Stricter licensing laws has been a huge factor. I'm good mates with a girl who owns Mojo's and a few other places around town and I've seen first hand how the prices for licensing is just going up and up.

Along with raids/other events on the old clubs making it impossible to obtain another liquor license at the place. Eg. Club199, Rise, St Pauls, Church (although re-opened many years later... No idea how), The Planet, Rapture, The Basement, etc.

And now that Earth, Cargo and Vodka Bar have shut down, it's just another kick in the teeth for Adelaide's nightlife.

Developers simply won't bother with Adelaide - it's too hard to obtain a venue license.

Melbourne knows how to party. Nothing like walking out of a club at 7am and into another club at 8am and partying until 3pm.
