Got my car tuned a few days ago and have had a day or two to drive it around and feel the rush of power I was anticipating.

It does go really really good and makes 315kw at the wheels, having never owned a 300kw+ car before I was expecting it to make me feel like the drivers seat was going to snap off, but it's just not floating my boat as much as i thought it would.

So now I don't know whether to chase some bigger numbers or work with what I've got for now.

Spec

Engine is unknown but been told by previous owner its a forged rebuild

N1 turbo's

650cc injectors

2.5" stainless dumps into full 3" exhaust.

Is 350kw going to feel that much better or do ya need to go for the 400kw mark to really feel like the afterburners are firing????

What was your previous power level? If you went from say 200awkw to 300+ (measured on the same dyno) you should certainly feel it.. but if you had high 200's already then obviously the difference is less pronounced.

Also, are you getting all those 315kw to the ground alright, how's you traction levels? Perhaps try borrowing a set of semis off someone and see how those feel?

And as the old saying goes, "more power is never enough" :blink:

Try this:

2nd or 3rd gear, cruise up to about 3-4k rpm, then slam your foot right down, floor it, with 315wkw and AWD, if you don't feel the massive pull, then you have problems my friend haha

my car's only got about 200kw at all fours, and if I do the above, it sends me hunting for the other lane, the sudden rush of torque is insane.

I think the problem is your power curve is very progressive, as mentioned the N1 turbos are designed for an almost linear power curve with no lag at all, so you don't feel an aggressive surge of power as most big single GTRs would...

He is in a GTR, there shouldnt be traction problems with 300rwkw!

N1 turbos, if R33/R32 items - laggy POS's for the power they deliver unfortunately, so if thats the case then thats sorted out as to why:)

Put a set of Garrett -9s on there and for the same power, it'll all be all on maybe 1000rpm earlier, even more perhaps.

Also remember GTR's are quite heavy. 280rwkw in my 1450kg car feels similar to a GTR with 330rwkw and what, 1650kg?

When i was coming out of a corner, full throttle from 4000rpm with a sorted 330rwkw in a GTR - certainly some G forces goin on!

The difference is never as big as you'd expect, when i went from 285rwhp to around 440rwhp in my r33 gts-t i thought it would knock my socks off.. was rather disappointed, especially after all the hype you hear about 300rwkw cars. I suppose things never quite live up to the hype. I'm hoping the 500rwhp mark will be a little more exciting.

I would also add that its the 'change in torque' that gives you that holy crap feeling. So a turbo with more lag will have a greater change in torque and give you more of a rush.

Some people like the responsive linear fast track car sort of power and some people like the nothing nothing oh holy crraaaappp feeling. I think its personal and what you use the car for.

I remember someone on this forum posting about going for a ride in the corvette ZR1, he said it felt quick but not mind blowing until he looked down at the speed. A car with constant torque will be very fast and be better at achieving traction but tends to not give that 'rush' feeling.

Bit more than that mate.

Bigger wheels, larger exhausts & so on, passengers, fluids etc.

R33's certainly tip a lot more than 1500kg

From the always perfect wikipedia (all are curb weights):

R32 GTR: 1430kg

R32 GTR V Spec: 1480kg

R33 GTR: 1540kg

R33 GTR V Spec: 1550kg

R34 GTR: 1540kg

R34 GTR V Spec: 1560kg

Mine at 262rwkw was a real blast to drive and was like a sling shot when it came on, you really felt that feeling in your pants that the car was flying. Then you get used to it and it doesn't feel fast anymore. Maybe you've built up this image in your head of what to expect which was more than it could give and now the reality is setting in?

I wish people would stop saying things like this, torque and power are directly related, at a given rpm with a given power level, you will always have the same amount of torque and vice versa.

You feel the acceleration, this is caused by power OR torque, they are both the same thing when you are talking about acceleration.

This is pretty much correct except change in torque is identical to change in power, basically where there is the biggest slope in the dyno graph is where you will feel the biggest punch in your back.

yes and no...

Torque is the derivative of power with respect to RPM. I.e. Torque x RPM = power (sorta...), like talking about position is torque, then speed is power. Same sorta relationship. So it's pretty erroneous to talk about power when talking about acceleration, because power is a rate of energy usage, not a force.

I guess I was expecting that in 2nd and 3rd aswell, that rush of Big Bore bike acceleration that I used to have in my Hayabusa days.

I guess these turbo's are at their limits so if they are older style N1's I might be in the market for an upgrade.

Would the -7's be that much better to warrant the expense?

Sounds exactly like how R33/R32 N1's deliver. For their time they were ok, but turbo tech has come a long way and improvements are signifigant.

Better wheel combination, ball gearing etc etc.

If you dont have cam gears fitted/setup, then you could potentially make it a "bit" better but it wont be fixing your issue overall i dont feel... but a good gain none the less in response.

So i guess the "wow" isnt there because its not going to be. Try and find a user on here with a 300-330rwkw -9 / GT-SS setup and go for a run in that and see if that is more what you want and go from there i reckon.

You want -9's, not 7's. 7's are a useless item these days really as the -9 superseed them in everyway.

    • Block bump. $400. As above cyl 6 needs bore or sleeve.
    • I would think making the argument that the travel is limited by a spring flexing against a spring perch as "the same method". Later on in the document they do state that the spring can't bind on full bump travel and cannot come loose in full rebound travel as well. (which is all very sensible). The laws are actually pretty sensible and reasonable. It's just that the people who enforce and check them don't actually read them or know them accurately. "Oh, coilovers? Instant fail mate. Don't even need to look at it." - Guy who will be instantly reported by me. There is probably merit to people who do get defected for height also get defected for the suspension in that state that allows it. I did never consider the people who are complaining about coilovers being picked on are also running around at 50mm off the floor.
    • I think given SAU's knowledge of E85 we can strongly conclude that 10% ethanol in almost any situation is entirely fine. Almost all of the myths against E85 were overblown, let alone E10.
    • From your link See bold text, is this referring to damper settings, if so that may a issue for "some" inspectors, I cannot see aftermarket coilovers having the evidence that "must be available that its functional performance is equivalent to the original" Maybe just remove the adjustment knows and hope for the best???? Meh 5.2 Suspension travel In all instances, modifications to a vehicle’s suspension must ensure the integrity of the system and not compromise the ride quality. At least two thirds of the original suspension travel should be maintained in both directions (rebound (i.e. extension) and bump (i.e. compression)), and rebound must be limited by the same method used by the vehicle manufacturer or if this is not practicable due to the nature of the modification, an equivalent method. If an alternative method is used, evidence must be available that its functional performance is equivalent to the original.
    • They actually don't - They adhere to VSB14 rules just like Victoria. The rules are against CABIN adjustable height, and it quite clearly states that the height has to be within parameters. I asked the VASS engineer to confirm this when I got my car engineered and they refused to engineer the coilovers because they didn't meet the requirements for requiring engineering. (mine are height adjustable.) People "Not wanting to bother" with "Actually reading/knowing/adhering to the rules" should result in fines and immediately losing the ability to issue blue slips and/or RWC's in Vic.
