Hi guys I'm back on the road after my gtst has been off the road fixing few minor things.

as the title states i'm trying to set my gtst to be my daily driver so i'm after a solid bulletproof mod.

while keeping it still unique in its own way, and please dont say why i spend all this money on gtst not save up and buy gtr... coz i already heard all that and i know they're awesome but...i want this GTST to be a Good one since its my first skyline. i'll get a gtr later down the track someday...

i'm not after rediculous power or have out of this world budget so i'll hear what you guys think about my plans.

I've been searching for a while but there's sooooo much info scattered everywhere so i've made this thread to keep all info i need into one (i know it's prob been covered already but my skills of searching arnt that good and it just confuses me).

what the car is now: pretty stock hcr32 with apexi pod, splitfire coils and spark plugs, cat taken out replaced with test tube, hks style exhaust,

My plans are

intake: i plan on getting the ARC induction box and already have a silk road r32 headlight vent that i scored off a mate :) , the vent will be customised to i can open/close the rear side when its pouring with rain and i dont want the box to have a shower). hope it will give some ok gains..

Exhaust: already fitted, its not genuine hks but still works fine, will change if problem arise.

Suspension: i was gonna wait but by bushes seem abit knock tired since its 20yrs old after all, so i'll be changing all my bushes to nolathane ones and as for coilovers.... i've got cusco zero 2e's with e-con.. pretty good shocks in my opinion... and that i just loved the idea of!!! scored the set from Japan off my friend brand new!

Rigidity: Cusco or Nismo front and rear strut brace.. (abit cosmetic?)

Electronics: I sont wanna go all out buy a expensive ecu but i would like a good ebc like blitz abc i-colour? bling factor but would like it since i havent heard any bad points about them.

Fuel: Nismo fuel pump with injectors

Intercooler: now i'm stuck.... i dont know which ones will be good.. i have a stock turbo atm but will upgrade soon or later so will be good to upgrade my i/c while i'm at it.. what's a really good reliable one for gtst? ARC? any particular brand? model? i would really like your input on this one.

Turbo: HKS GT2530 since i think its close to the stock one i have in terms of less lag and quick spool with ok gains over stock?

again inputs appreciated.

CLUTCH: Essential? if so.. os giken or cusco i'm not sure which one would be good for daily city driving with occational highway drive??

things i am really confused about: i was going to get a bov installed but when i searched the forum half of the guys said the aftermarket atm ones stall the engine and bov's are gay gay and gayer.... i thought they were to prevent surge.. wrong? should i stick with stock? If i was to get one which one works well and is reliable with the rb20det? GFB? HKS? Greddy? i dont need it to be loud. i was thinking of GFB Deceptor pro.. any ideas?

and also i still dont fully grasp the need for a wastegate.. will i need one?? for a street set up? if so which ones?

External/body: The car is abit rough body wise, i plan to make ot mint

Front: GTR bonnet, Grill, Nismo N1 style vented front bar.

Rear: East bear GTR rear bumper (Looks AWESOME) :D

panel: GTR Rear quarter panels to widen the rear

colour: Not sure yet but... maybe metallic black or blue? what's your inputs?

If you read till the end, i thank you... come to think of it its mega long..... sorry... :geek:

i would appreciate any inputs and would like to hear from you guys since this project will start in about two months time...

do you think this is a good initial mod? or do i need to change it... cheers for you time..

i got my 32 only a couple of weeks ago or so its got 150kw atw with a dump pipe (3inch home made style lol) 3 inch exhaust with a muffler and a mufler tip, gonna gut the cat, fmic, pod, tein coil over front and whiteline rear and a button clutch im kinda at the same stage as you as i didnt do these mods for me its kinda backtracking a few things and making them right and making the car a good reliable daily/track car, i heard that getting a nistune piggyback is the way to go and its not super expesive, id say if you want the car to be bullet proof it wouldnt hurt to upgrade the clutch, style wise mine is metallic black and i love it, keep us posted coz im pre interseted and pics?

here's mine- all I got to do is put forged gear into motor when/if she finally goes bang-which shouldnt happen cause we are running safe tune AFR's at 287rwhp

hey guys cheers for the imputs. i've finally got the bloody camera working again i've snapped pics of my skyline

she's a 1990 gtst pretty much stock std (the oils leaks are from my other crappy car that i'm fixing up so dont mind it :D

post-76154-1283317839_thumb.jpg

the interior is pretty good considering the age... its 20yrs old ater all..

post-76154-1283317944_thumb.jpgpost-76154-1283317984_thumb.jpg

the car has caused bit of problems from the start... but i guess thats the joy of owning a 20yr old sports car....

my recent problems were... the coil packs that were installed with the engine about a month ago failed... so the car was sounding like a wrx and missing..

i tried to tape the coilpacks with electrical tape and put them back.. like so....(the ones i have are red... prob some cheap ones not sure... pad $350 for em nz dollars... when i did the engine swap but the coils dropped already,,,)

post-76154-1283318376_thumb.jpg but no luck even after taping them...

i'm waiting for my splitfires now.. hopefully solves the problem...

well i'll keep posting after the parts arrive... i'll try to do most by myself... with all your helpful inputs... except turbo install and etcetc

cheers

Me too- to steal a quote from Initial D 4th season; those other guys can have their Ferrari's, Porsche's & GTR's but for me its R32Gtst 4 LIFE

hey mate. i like seeing people that are happy with a stockish gtst. that fealing seems to soon go. haha.

some ideas for you.

suspension: just get factory nissan bushes put in it where nessasary. brand new factory bushes will be better than the nolathan items.

Nismo braces are good. try and get the nismo front brace with the master cylender stopper. i havent seen one for sale for years and my last car i made a copy type one.

Fuel pump: more important than the fuel pump is doing the fuel pump wiring mod. run a new battery feed to the pump via a relay and put the pump earth straight to ground in the boot. the earth off the pump goes right throught the loom to the risistor near the turbo. the extra voltage will help the stock pump keep up.

Injectors: with a HKS 2530 you will get close to 200rwkw on the stock injectors and then bang for buck you cant go past GTR injectors especialy for the 240rwkw mark that the 2530 will max at.

computer wise for a street car you realy can go past a GTR power FC, GTR injectors, Z32 AFM with a 2530. this setup has been done to death plenty of good results.

intercooler: id be looking for a greddy turn flow. if your keeping the engine stockish its by far the best cooler option. we run one on out 280rwkw gtst with no dramas. and you keep the stock cooler piping in the engine bay.

Clutch: i wouldnt bother wasting my money on a jap clutch as they will be way over the top for A) RB20 gearbox. and B ) way to heavy for street driving. just get an excedy cushion button. i ran one in my drift car for nearly a year with no dramas.

BOV: they used to be cool but now arent. i blame turbo smart for gay sounding ones. at least the HKS and Greddy ones made cool noises. putting one can cause stalling issues but its hit and miss. there realy isnt any need for one is what i comes down to. and if you are concerened about the stock item holding boost with a 2530 than the best option is to get a GTR BOV.

then if you just want a nice street car with a punchier engine id be on the hunt for an rb25de out of an r32 gts. they are hi comp. run it with lowish boost and it will be sweet. i ran one for a year and a half in my drift car no dramas at all. the engine made 220rwkw on 13psi in comparison to an rb20det with a 2530 on 19psi.

just some food for thought.

hey man cheers for your input, much appreciated... i liked the sound of GTR power FC, GTR injectors, Z32 AFM with a 2530... its pretty common but seems to be ok with no major issues( just what i'm after.. its been hard since the beginning and i'm pretty much have had enough issues for the next year as well).

just a quick q, i've never heard of greddy turn flow.. is it one of those stock replacements or front mounted? and also i've searched for hks 2530's but are they really discontinued now??? whats the closest i'll get if they cant be found anymore?

all i want my turbo to do is be stronger (reliability) than stock without the lag and slow spool i'm not a drag or drift just want a awesome streetcar.. cheers again

    • I certainly fall into the annoyed camp, but glad to hear that if it's happening at low boost then I'm not likely going to blow a turbo and end up with metal shards in my oil. Just feels like it prevents me from really driving it without hesitation and "peak" performance. Wonder if it's the VCAM, it did an impressive job of shifting the torque curve and faster spool, but maybe now it's "too fast" and there's too much air for how open the throttle is.  Based on some other threads, will also do some reading on synchronizing the actuators. They are the default actuators that come on the Garrett's and I would think they would be set the same coming from the factory, but if the turbos don't actually work exactly the same way at the same time as previously mentioned, it would be worth making sure the actuators are actuating together properly
    • I went down this rabbit hole before, ended up sourcing a motor from the UK (I'm in Japan) which also didn't function correctly. With the original motor, I disassembled it and reassembled it and it works somewhat, sometimes. What I could deduce from all my screwing around is that there is calibration of the gears on the inside of the motor and two ramps on the main gear which activate switches that operate the motor and move the sunroof either to retract into the roof or tilt. Where I got stuck was that, it seemed in my case that one or both of the switches that are activated by the ramp on the gear did not always activate and thus the motor did not move, causing it to sometimes not retract or tilt (apologies, I've forgotten which way it didn't work.).  Of course this part is discontinued at Nissan now, it's the same part in the S15 but no other models. I also contacted the manufacturer of the component for schematics - forgot the name, they're based in Gifu - but they declined to share the information due to being bound by an NDA, sadly. Looking through my pictures now, it seems I last had a crack at this in 2022. See, I so kindly wrote "open" and "close" next to the switches. If you figure it out, please do tell me. Those little switches, with the red buttons may need to be replaced.
    • It says 300ZX, does that make it an Aus delivered car? Funny how back in the day I just couldn't care less about Z32's and these days I am just in love with them. Back when Nissan was into pushing the envelope. 🤣
    • Hi guys, just after some guidance with an R34 sunroof that has stopped working correctly. It still opens and closes perfectly fine, but it no longer tilts/vents up or down. As a result, the rear of the glass now sags a bit as it drops down slightly in order to retract into the roof, but now it can't pop upwards into a flush position. I’ve probed the pins on the back of the switch connector with a multimeter and it seems like both switches (for open/close and tilt/vent) still work correctly. Any ideas on what it could be, or where I should even start in terms of diagnosing? I'm sure someone's had this issue before but I haven't been able to find anything online relating to this specific issue, most of the issues are with the seals leaking or the motor failing entirely. Thanks in advance!
