There seem to be quite a few good ol' v8's out there that can pull fast quarters, in the 9-11 sec bracket and doing it seemingly effortlessly when I have seen it at Willowbank.

It has just caught my attention and it seems there is a fair amount of drama involved with doing it in a 4/6. Lotsa noise and no guarantees kinda atmosphere.

These old fords I was getting to look at where nothing special. I was with mates of the owners and they were all a pretty standard setup with 2 speed boxes, good low grunt and juuuuuust the right suspension setup and tyre pressure (soft rears, really soft). Hell even a panel van did a 9!

'Lines tend more toward circuit setup in my limited perspective and obviously the 60 time is critical so if you were to trick the box, raise the stall and work the suspension it would be interesting to see how the stock power output would do over the early part of the course. Just seems too many import owners get the suspension and 'box setup wrong, more a street tuff setup.

Once you get into the 12's (high/low) with mph over 120, tyres are the clincher...

On street tyres (ie. falken azenis st115 - which are sm_limpy.gif), the best I've run is 12.3 @ 124mph - with a 2.35 60ft...

Going by the fact that for each 0.1 sec at the 60ft line you should be able to make up 0.2 sec at the other end, a 1.85 sec 60ft time (in theory) should be worth a full second at the other end of the track.

The thing you've got to remember, is think about how quick 0.1 of a second is. It's about the same amount of time as it takes to blink!

The cheapest way to get an 11 sec 1/4 with the smallest amount of power, is a set of 90/10's in the front, 70/30's in the back, a 4000rpm high-stall, slicks and a set of front-runners!

What gearbox would you put behind a rb30det? Im in the process of starting a new project and ive decided its got to be drag foremost (over daily driving) it will still be a 'street car'. With this in mind ive decided on auto, can they do a jatco 4 speed which retains 4 speeds and can hold 500 rwhp. Or should i be looking at a turbo 350 with adapter plate?

first of all, if you're looking to build a car for drag racing, why are looking at retaining the crappy 4 spd Jatco?

depending on what times you're after, you'd ideally be better off going for a Trimatic or even a 2spd Powerglide :kick:

if you're really dead set on the idea of the Jatco, i believe Yarrey Valley Autos are the guys to talk to.

Ummm sorry rev210 but how is it possible for them to be achieving these times on street tyres. As far as I know only two GTR's in the country have even acheived mid/low 9's using nittos and they are Keir Wilson and Munro. They get traction problems in their 4wd equipped cars so how is it possible for the v8's not only to grab traction but finish the quarter with such low times on radial tyres. (I am trying to say they must be using slicks)

I was at a drag event at Willowbank 2 years ago and one of the guys I was with had a panelvan...V8 obviously and rear tyres with tread. Didn't take much notice other than that but they were running pretty low pressure. Ran a 9.? second pass as easy as. I was rocked, but this thing didn't like corners.

The V8 brigade have the drags sorted so there are a few things to learn off them.

I had a vl calais turbo with a 5 speed RB30DET box in it and it handled 220rwkw easily. But i went through clutches and diffs a fair bit. U put a good driveline on it, over 200 kw and ull be scaring alot of the nice cars on the road. ( i miss mine :) )

go to your local drag strip, then we will have this discussion again if you think there is a point to it.

    • I know I have to get a wheel alignment but until then I just need to bring the rear tyres in a bit they're wearing to the belt on the inside and brand new on the outside edge. I did shorten the arms a bit but got it wrong now after a few klms the Slip and VDC lights come on. I'd just like to get it to a point where I can drive for another week or two before getting an alignment. I've had to pay a lot of other stuff recently so doing it myself is my only option 
    • You just need a wheel alignment after, so just set them to the same as current and drive to the shop. As there are 2 upper links it may also be worth adding adjustable upper front links at the same time; these reduce bump steer when you move the camber (note that setting those correctly takes a lot longer as you have to recheck the camber at each length of the toe arm, through a range of movement, so you could just ignore that unless the handling becomes unpredictable)
    • I got adjustable after market rear camber arm to replace the stock one's because got sick of having to buy new rear tyres every few months. Can anyone please let me know what the best adjustment length would be. I don't have the old ones anymore to get measurements. I'm guessing the stock measurement minus a few mm would do it. Please any help on replacing them would be fantastic I've watched the YouTube clips but no-one talks about how long to set the camber arm to.
    • Heh. I copied the link to the video direct, instead of the thread I mentioned. But the video is the main value content anyway. Otherwise, yes, in Europe, surely you'd be expected to buy local. Being whichever flavour of Michelin, Continental or Pirelli suits your usage model.
    • Continental have consistently beaten the absolute shit out of every other performance tyre in Wet/Damp/Cold conditions and give up a little bit of time (half a second at most) in the dry. Almost like it's engineered for German conditions or something. I'd def give those a try.
