Hey guys,

Just wanted to know if anyone had a datalogit spare that my mate and I could use for testing for a uni project.

Basically what we are trying to do is add a standalone device to the powerfc's ps2 port that will log speed vs rpms, knock, etc... and store the data on it's memory. We then want to be able to plug it into the computer and it will graph all the values.

The idea of it is in accidents cops could use the data to piece together an accident (like a plane black box) as well as people could use it for personal entertainment such as graphing their data and then the program will upload it to facebook and people can compare, etc..

The problem we are having at the moment is we cannot get our device to "talk" with the powerfc, we have the serial rs232 port connected between the pc and the device and the device to the powerfc, but cannot "see" the values that are being sent out the ps2 port.

If anyone is willing to help it would be greatly appreciated.

Please note - this is not for financial gain in any way, nor will we be replicating the device, in the end we just want to get through the course with a pass :)

Adam

Lol i'm actually doing a similar uni project using the standard nissan console port, lots of programming, a few arduino microcontrollers and some cheap radios (Wireless telemetry basically). Fun actually doing a project i have interest in.

If a powerfc is anything like the nissan console port, it will not talk to you unless you send the init sequence, followed by the relevant command, ecu register, etc. Even then, the data it spits out needs to be converted. Unless you have some sort of reference, it may be extremely difficult to achieve this.

In my example, i used the following resource for the nissan console port:

As a side project you could try to port it to and android app, being able to use your phone as a hand controller (even just for display) would be pretty cool.

Should have come to general meeting lastnight! Paul was doing some interesting talking on the topic of this. Someone even tried to make a hand controller out of a Ninentdo DS I think lol.

From what Paul was saying lastnight, FC Hako cable might be a better option for you Adam? I think it's only $175...compared to Datalogit cable that's real cheap, and you can use any software with it (including Datalogit).

the reason you dont get data is because the powerfc protocol has specific check sums and commands

and it wont do diddly squat without that sequence

ive got an fc-hako cable but it is being used at the moment

i think your idea is great and i think there might be a market in it

i think its annoying if you have a track car that you have to have a fully blown laptop in your car to log all the data

if you can plug a USB style dongle into the PS2 port and it basically logs every sensor the cars has, this would be great

Thanks for that mate. wonder how many uni students end up trying something like this :(

Interesting. Will let my mate know and see if its something he wants to explore. cheers.

Paul, we have emailed the people at datalogit hoping they could give us some more insight into the check sums/etc, basically setting up the connection... havent heard back from them yet. Would you happen to know the sequence of events / values we need to initiate the connection?

thanks for the kind words.

I started out in Bachelor of Computer Science/Bachelor of Computer Engineering, which is what my mate is doing, I dropped engineering and am just doing Bachelor of Computer Science.

Yes - Nerd I am :P

no idea on what is required and you won't get it from the datalogit guys as their hard work and time that has gone into datalogit, why would they release it?

you can find it on the internet look in my PFC FAQ under hacking and youll find a post by goblin from the rx7 forums

he disassembled the protocols and the checksums and it has some info in here

HAHAHA!!! nah man..i am doing bachelor or science/bachelor of electronic and computer science...so i feel your pain...but the surprise thing is that we never get exciting project like yours....

    • My guesstimate, with no real numbers to back it up, is it won't effect it greatly at all.its not a huge change in position, and I can't see the air flow changing from in turbulence that much based on distance, and what's in front of it. Johnny and Brad may have some more numbers to share from experience though.
    • Which solenoid? Why was it changed? Again, why was this done? ...well, these wear..but ultimately, why was it changed? Did you reset the idle voltage level after fitment? I'm just a tad confused ~ the flash code doesn't allude to these items being faulty, so in my mind the only reason to change these things, would be some drive-ability issue....and if that's the case, what was the problem? Those questions aside, check if the dropping resistor is OK ...should be 11~14 ohms (TCU doesn't throw a flash code for this) ~ also, these TCU designs have full time power (to keep fault code RAM alive), and I think that'll throw a logic code (as opposed to the 10 hardware codes), if that power is missing (or the ram has gone bad in the TCU, which you can check..but that's another story here perhaps).
    • Question for people who "know stuff" I am looking at doing the new intake like the one in the picture (the pictured is designed for the OEM TB and intake plenum), this design has the filter behind the front bar, but, the filter sits where the OEM duct heads into the front bar, and the standard aperture when the OEM ducting is removed allows the filter to pulled back out of the front bar into the engine bay for servicing, a simple blanking plate is used to seal the aperture behind the filter This will require a 45° silicone hose from the TB, like the alloy pipe that is currently there, to another 45° silicone hose to get a straight run to the aperture in the front bar Question: how will it effect the tune if I move the MAF about 100-150mm forward, the red is around where my MAF is currently, and the green would be where it would end up Like this This is the hole the filter goes through  Ends up like this LOL..Cheers
    • Despite the level up question, actually I do know what that is....it is a pressure sender wire.  So check out around the oil filter for an oil pressure sender, or maybe fuel pressure near the filter or on the engine. Possibly but less likely coolant pressure sensor because they tend to be combined temp/pressure senders if you have one. Could also be brake pressure (in a brake line somewhere pre ABS) but maybe I'm the only one that has that on a skyline.
    • Pull codes via the self-diagnosis procedure. As far as I can tell this is just a sign of transmission issues but not a code unto itself.
