Hi everyone,

I found a leak in the hose running from the PCV valve to the intake plenum, while trying to remove it to get it fixed/replaced I managed to split the grommet for the PCV valve - ended up having to remove the rocker cover to get it out.

Making a 5 minute job take almost an hour *sigh*.

So now I've got a cracked hose and no grommet for the PCV valve. I did however have one of those little air filters which by some spectacular fluke actually fits really well.

After taking the car for a drive and removing the filter I had to freeze it for 5 minutes just to get it back in.

I've read a lot of stuff about various catch can setups and seen some people have a setup that completely removes the PCV valve from the picture - and the subsequent caution of becoming pig food.

Now I know that having this little filter where it is; isn't legal - I'm not so worried about that as much as I am about this setup being less then ideal for crank case pressure - or something else that I haven't considered.

The car is running fine now, I didn't see anything wrong with oil pressure or temps - idle is smooth again and holding boost a lot better - I don't wanna do any damage just to save myself the work.

Would you run a mini air filter and block off the hose from the plenum instead of running a PCV valve/blocking it off completely?

I can get a pic of the engine bay if needed to show what I've done.

Tell me what you think peoples!

I believe the PCV is the culprit for spewing oil into the plenum whilst decellerating on a hard left hand turn.

RB's are notorious for this on the track.

I had a plume of smoke after turn 1 at Eastern crk big enough to blind the car behind me, never mind the oil all over the track.

Then oil dripped out my BOV for the next 6 weeks, which is mounted underneath just after my intercooler and up hill.

Proving to me the oil came from the plenum side.

I have N1 oil pump and no ext return though.

Even for 100 % street use, the engine will still vent sufficiently through the turbo.

I've read a lot of stuff about various catch can setups and seen some people have a setup that completely removes the PCV valve from the picture - and the subsequent caution of becoming pig food.

In regards to the blocking of the Rocker cover to intake manifold PCV, is that illegal even if there is no venting to atmosphere?

Would you run a mini air filter and block off the hose from the plenum instead of running a PCV valve/blocking it off completely?
You are risking pulling un-metered air - through the filter, across the rockers and down to the inlet side of the turbo - into the air/fuel mix, causing a leaner than expected A/F. And lean A/F is asking for detonation.
Just go to Repco and buy a new grommet. Have bought many before

Went to repco today, got another grommet - I asked them about 'S' bend hoses, they have nothing that comes even close to what I need, they did have those springs you can use to bend a straight hose without kinking it - again nothing even close to what I need, leaving nissan or wreckers (cringe).

I've put about 50k's on the car since I fitted this lil air filter and haven't noticed anything that would make me think I've been drawing in un-metered air, still worried I'm doing damage without knowing.

Zoomzoom, I'm not sure if there is a way to remove the PCV valve and connecting hose without it being illegal. Normally the idea is to vent the oily gases anywhere but into the intake - 'oil catch can' would be the key words, though if setup incorrectly can still lead to damage, defect or do nothing at all.

So I think I'll just goto the wreckers and try get another hose - might even be able to score a heat shield for my exhaust manifold.

Thanks for your input everyone.

did you actually ring Nissan? or just assume it would be dear? $34.50 and in stock at the springwood store. I'd say it's a commonly sold part and $35 isn't something to cringe about

haha nah I was more cringing at the idea of going to a wreckers and did infact call nissan and will be going to that very store this arvo or maybe tomorrow.

edit: getting the exhaust heat shield was the bonus of going to the wreckers

    • What an awesome idea to fit the facelift Lamborghini Diablo headlights. They are a perfect fit!
    • An update regarding the registration with the DVLA I sent off the paperwork the day after I collected the car from the port, two weeks later it was all returned with a letter explaining they have rejected the application. This was because the cheque was £20 short for the road tax (I used a price list I found online). Nevermind it is what it is, it was sent back to them the following day with a new cheque. Fast forward another 2 weeks or so, I called them for an update to be told it had been rejected. Yesterday (16th September) I received the documents back along with another letter, this time it was because I didn't put an X in one box on the V750 (personalised number plate certificate), which declared that I had the rights to the personalised number plate. Why this wasn't mentioned in the first rejection letter, I don't know, but it could have saved this headache. The documents were sent back today, so fingers crossed third times a charm and it'll FINALLY be registered on the road just in time for the bad weather (woohoo!) To cheer myself up I lowered the front 25mm, was sick of seeing it sit like a monster truck. No idea how much clearance I'll have getting on and off the driveway, I'll worry about that when I can actually drive it
    • You're going to miss not worrying about rust in the strut towers like the Skyline shitboxes out there
    • A few little updates that weren't filmed due to not taking long to do or not interesting enough for their own video. My new K&N Air Filter arrived, I went with an RU-4180 which matched the dimensions of the universal cone filter the car originally had.  The battery had gone flat, while that was charging I tidied up the spaghetti wiring at the bulk head and down the sides of the engine Next job was to swap the stereo The Kenwood harness had the female ISO plugs cut off and the male ISO plugs cut off the adaptor loom and joined with bullet connectors. I ordered in a repair loom through work and re-did it all. New Kenwood unit installed (Android Auto, DAB, Bluetooth, Reverse Camera) The bonnet/hood gas struts have been poor since collecting the car. I couldn't find any suitable replacements locally so took a chance on a pair from AliExpress.  The originals don't use a retaining clip to secure the cup onto the ball fixture, would explain why I struggled for 10-15mins trying to pry off the cups. The ball fixtures unscrew using a 12mm spanner, new ones are the same size. Sadly no photo of them fitted, you're not missing much lol The dished Momo steering wheel got replaced with my Momo Tuner, turns out I ordered counter sunk bolts for the horn trim ring (like they normally are for the steering wheel) instead of allen cap (flat seat)  A terrible photo of a Quaife style gear shift knob I've had stashed in my tool box for many years after purchasing the incorrect thread size (I can see a pattern emerging with ordering incorrect parts...) Also threw in a cup holder and a (empty) Boss Coffee can, because why not
    • GT-R clearly the better choice! The 300 is certainly not insaly fast but has a decent amount of poke. Does a nice little drift around the corners with a decent amount of throttle. It's VERY predictable in a slide too.  Feels so progressive! People probably presume there's a 25 year old driving it based on my behaviour this week! 🤣
