Nick - good work for your first time. Did you want some CC?

Thanks dude! And yeah, why not Sidd - some CC would be much appreciated. There's a chance I *might* work with the jeweller again in the future. (Check out MinkyGrant.com)

I didn't have much in the way of lighting, unfortunately. An overhead skylight, on-camera external flash used to trigger an off-camera flash, and some use of down-lights later on as the sun started to fade, IIRC. Would have been nice to have access to continuous lights, but I don't have the money to buy them (and I doubt I could justify buying them even if I did have the money), and wasn't sure where to hire them from either around me or in the area around jeweller's house.

The jewerly itself looks great, but I feel to showcase this you might have to take a full body shot rather than head shots (or take a step back). To me the main focus in these pics are her head. I first see the eyes than the item she is wearing.

Also all three pictures have different white balance. If its for a website you need to keep it consistent.

In regards to lighting, maybe hire a few flashes. You can get cheap softboxes for speedlights easily on ebay.

If you want to make it look natural maybe set up two flashes behind you and point it straight up or angle it backwards instead of direct flash on subject.

Hope this helps.

Sidd.

Thanks Sidd.

Re: the headshots, I asked what the "client" wanted and she said that she wanted to make the shots more personal instead of just the product by itself. If she gives me more work, then I'll definitely consider and suggest the full body shot, and maybe take photos in her backyard. The house she lives in is really nice, so maybe those shots with a shallow DoF would work, especially since the products are all made of rare pieces of timber and jewels.

I've already got two flashes, but might consider some softboxes soon if I can justify the cost by getting some paid work or sell some shots or whatever. And yeah, I did have the flashes pointing up and back to bounce off the ceiling - maybe I shouldn't have moved them between shots...

    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
