You would be best off with the Autech S15, far better power to weight, close ratio 6 speed etc. However all the mods are pretty much done for you, so apart from maybe management/dyno tune, you'll end up with ~ >100kw/tonne (120-125rwkW in 1200kg car).

Above option will also be a fair bit better option legally as far as attention from the popo goes.

That said there is an R34 for sale on here with similar CR and 128kW at the wheels, you lose the gearing and weight advantage, but it still wont be too slow, will sound better and is the cheaper option + better for passenger.

I'd definitely go the S15 though (better resale if you don’t ruin it, less 'skyline hate', faster, better handling).

If you want to mod either of them then dont buy one imo

I'll assume you are a P-plater, If you want to buy one than go the S15.

BUT leave it stock and buy a Turbo 34 or S15 later to play with.

Neither car in NA form is a rocket and they do not give good gains per $ spent on mods

Also, if you wanted to get a little serious and had some disposable cash you could 2.2L stroke it, plus if you look in the US there are ~160thou oversize sleeves and pistons... so you could square it at 90mm stroke and 90mm bore @ 2.3L, or I think you can get longer strokes, either way thats a 15% capacity boost and if that could net you ~10% more power you'd be in business.

edit: though I do agree with zebra, but the smartest option isn't always the most fun, I’ve been off my p's for years (not that we had/have those laws in Tas anyway) and if I was in your situation, I know I would still do it, 3 years is a long time. I had a high performance car after 6 months of being licensed, and by first year I think I was a better driver than I am now (though yes did take more risks).

*shrugs*

It all comes down to what you want out of it...

P Plater legal N/A's arent quick stock, and the diference of having 1, 2 or full car of passengers can change its performance noticably. (Who cruises alone these days?)

S15 are quicker cos of the power to weight ratio!

But for the price of an N/A S15 you can probably have a R34 and have a couple mods added to it which will even it out.

But beware, Modded N/A's is the same thing to driving a turbo when it comes to P plater law! I mean you can still get charged with 3 demirit points because it is considered a mod to increase vehicle's performance.. But I havnt heard of anyone yet being done for having exhausts/pod filters/ECU's, etc in this field, only the standard defect notices/EPA's, etc...

Edit: I know its hard and is the best option to save up and just buy a turbo car later on, but if youre like me with still 3 years of P's to go and cant resist imports, just buy one and slowly do up everything less performance mods, so that when it comes to getting off youre p's you can just do an engine swap since you wont be able to sell it for a decent price anymore plus the risk of selling it and buying something dodgy will be always present.

Agree, and that's why the S15 is the best option imo, as all the usual mods are standard so you can’t get pinged for them. If you were to only change ecu with say a Type 4 nistune, they would never know, ditto for internal mods such as capacity overbore/stroke.

You'll probably struggle to get a better power output from the RB25 than the S15 with only basic mods anyway (unless you want to up the CR, fit cams, etc), so even with passengers, a lighter starting weight is more ideal.

Plus better economy .

+1 serg and zebra

much as I love the r34 the s15 would b a more sensible option if your planning to sell it later on...but personally I'd buy the r34 anyway cos its what I like and the sound the autech sr20 with an exhaust makes is horrible.......to me lol, I wonder why nissan bothered to add the rear seats in an s15 it is pointless....LOL or maybe cos the ppl in japan are smaller? ahahah

Eg Civic..... :D hehe

Seriously though, absolutely spanked my mates autech S15 and stock Aus Delivered S14 (highway).

Or a Pulsar VZ-R N1... This kept up with the civic until the pulsar hit the limiter at 180. Stock, carrying me and my other friend. Much more weight than the civic.

Not sure what was done to the civic, but all that was known was that it had some sort of B16 and was completely stripped inside.

Edit, on another note, my mate with the N1 pulsar, also has an Autech S15, that has Tomei 272 cams, springs, valves the works, gears, headers, full titanium exhaust, LUMPY AS F*CK, not sure what was done to the bottom end, but that thing is ridiculous. P-platers dream. Currently getting complied, else i'd get a video

Have you guys ever seen a drag race between an s15 and an r34? or are you just going off the whole power to weight ration idea??

I don't mean to flame but I have raced an s15 and holy shit guess what, its slow, i won.

- Pod filter + exhaust, no hardcore mods done to both cars.

now that may not mean I'm right but hey it happened.

That power to weight ratio that you are talking about, now yes the s15 is about 200 ish KGs lighter (depending on drivers weight and sound system etc) but its a 2L, 4 cylinder engine... less torque less response...

On paper the HP is similar and the weight difference certainly makes the S15 seem like the winner but the power in an s15 doesn't come out until your twisting its nuts at high RPM. (one car i drove didn't even seem to have power to be honest)

Pod filter + exhaust, no hard core mods done to both cars

Edited by R34 -_-

Its highly dependent on the driver, without an aggressive launch of course it’s going to bog down and lose the traffic light grand prix to 80/100kmph. Also remember we're talking about the Autech not a standard S15 (there is a big difference if you combine power and gearing).

By all means, get whatever. I'm not a big fan of SR20's, they rev slow and feel unresponsive compared to the RB25, plus sound like balls (and sound is a big thing for me - I think I'd varex it) but I'd still have the S15 over the R34 if it had to be N/A.

I'm talking from experience from driving SR20DE and SR20DET (SSS/S13&S14), but I've never driven the Autech S15.

i've beaten a natro 33 in the missus SSS pulsar, so it's all relative. the power isn't as high in the rev range as you would think. pull well from 3000rpm, pull really well from 4500rpm. i would assume tha autech sr20 would pull even better.

I haven't driven an "Autech" version either but even with a close ratio gearbox I could imagine it still not reving out as good as an Rb25.

1st gear my car pulls hard, unless you fark the launch up its feels a lot better off the mark than an S15

Then if its rolling start from 2nd i would smoke an s15 for sure, to me na s15's are only suited to windy road driving where your not slowing down too much for corners or having to blast it on long straights so your keeping the revs/speed up becuase as soon as you drop down into low rpm its like trying to get a fat kid to run uphill.

Oh and if we are comparing a special version of silvia to a skyline we might as well use the special version of skyline, the "GT V"

(LSD, Turbo suspension, Turbo size brakes, better re sale value as its pretty rare)

I owned an Autech S15 for 1.5 years when i was on my Ps. it was excellent car for a non turbo. unique and clean. can and will keep with alot of bigger cars. in terms of reliability, it depends on the condition of the car you get. i got mine for a premium price. genuine mileage backed up with books etc. the time that i owned it everything was smooth. abit of advice if you do decide to buy one. make sure the engine itself is in top condition. because if it fails. your screwed. autech sr's are hard to come by.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just in case anyone is interested.. I have a N/A R34 and my brother has an Autech S15..

We both agree my car is more powerful, the lack of torque from the 4 cyl engine is very noticeable and I can't even stand to drive it. It just feels like another 4 cyl car. Not saying my Skyline is a supercar, but the difference is definitely there.

    • Actually everyone on the roads was really well behaved. The only person that did any minor tailgating was a local hoon in a Turbo Focus. Unfortunately we weren't going the same way so there was no grand initial D touge battle. Lots of people pulled over and let me through. The amount of "Hey man nice car, omg skyline, nice 34 man woo" was suprising. Like really suprising. Like almost annoying. My partner was obviously surprised, she'd never seen anyone in the real world point out the car/like the car/want to chat about the car before, so to have like 3 people per day mention it was notable, I could finally say SEE? SOMEONE THINKS THEY'RE COOL. Everyone was also pretty suprised about the weather. Every day was dry and about ~13-14C. Mount Wellington had a sign that said they close the gates at 9pm and I was heading up there at about ~7:30. It was VERY apparent that conditions were getting significantly worse by the minute on the way up and down. The road on the mountain was terrible though, it's no driving road. I have various suspension related questions now. Luckily it was only about 20 minutes from where we were staying to the top of the mountain as said Google maps. We only had the 2 nights in Hobart. We went to the Farm Gate Market though which was really good - And went down to the Hastings Thermal springs/caves down there during the day. I'd definitely be up for going back again, so luckily there's a few more sights yet to see. Didn't get to do the west coast/queenstown/cradle mountain so this was supposed to be a 'scouting' trip anyway of sorts if I were to one day do/take part in/organize a more car-focused trip. As for the boat, it wasn't bad. Well it was bad, but not in the way you're thinking. We did the night trip which leaves at 6:45 (though you have to be there ~2 hours earlier) and arrives the next morning at about 6am. There is nothing to do on the ship. If you plan accordingly and bring a book/tablet/show to watch/charger you can just chill out, take some Travacalm and just sleep through it. The food there is an extremely basic buffet that costs $32 a plate, or $14 for a $3 pizza. The way back we had a travel kettle and a few different types of cup noodles and made our own tea/coffee in the room. This was a far superior way to do it. At the very least book one of the rooms with beds. I guess as we were in the off season we didn't have room mates. You get an option for rooms with 4 beds (2x bunks) or a room with just the two bottom beds. There's also some option for a deluxe queen bed but it's much pricer. We've been on sleeper trains in Asia before so we figured this is similar (and it was)
    • You just gotta be really, really, really clear and decisive with what you want your end product to be. 99% of people who want this conversion aren't "I want to run a 295 front tyre!" so they don't really need the widebody. They just want the OEM body to look a little less dumpy, so bonnet, bar, skirts job done with some camber, stretch, slam. It's when you want that, but then decide to pivot later you get big problems. See also if you're willing to get an all in one fibreglass bar, and you're willing to accept fibreglass problems like cracking the entire item on a driveway, instead of just a piece attached to the bottom, etc etc etc. Decide this all before buyin'.
    • After @Kinkstaah debacle, I'd never want to try and get it right 😛
    • The hood lines up with the fenders. The front bar doesn't perfectly line up with the fenders where the wheel arch is. You have to 'squeeze' the front bar 'in' as it wants to naturally flare out and be longer on the sides. There's a few threads where people notice this when they only swap a GTR style bumper and front bar. Unless you have genuine OEM items - you may be better served getting conversion kits. There are GTT bumpers to fit GTR hoods. There are GTR hoods (non genuine) to fit the GTT bracketry. MAY
