hi guys,

i have an r32gtr which is insured with shannons for 20k & the payment is $1600p/yr which is fair.

i am looking at upgrading to a nicer r32gtr & my quote came back @ $3300p/yr which is an absolute joke (for the same value as well, 20k)

who else is out there that insure import cars such as the gtr?

i live in sydney if that makes a difference...help ;)

thanks,

marko

* Shannons (my R34 GT-R is insured with them for $70K via premium of $1,529 pa incl. gst)

* Guild (my son's R33 GT-R is insured with them for $25K via premium of $940 pa incl. gst)(self or parent needs to be in pharmacy/medicine etc)

* Just Car (haven't used them for a while now)

* NRMA (a recent inclusion I think)

* Famous (is this one in - or is it out now?)

shannons explain that due to the recent natural disasters such as the hail storm that apparently occurred in WA etc has pushed all premium up - but more more double??? this is unreasonable...

this is why i ask who else insures import cars?

im over 30 as well!

Well, my quote above for my renewal, begins on Nov 27th.

Last year, (ie 27/11/09 - 26/11/10), I was paying $1800 pa for the same car with sum insured of $75K

I can't see how a hail storm could have impacted on my premium at all.

Sometimes the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. But then, premiums can go up markedly if there's even been 1 extra speeding violation.

Or then again, perhaps you've down the street but into a 'riskier' postcode.

I'd ring them up again under a Nom de Plum and see if they give you the same magnified/extravagant quote. And if that quote is lower, grab it.

I'm getting a slightly upgraded R34 GT-R from Japan next month, so I'll be having to upgrade my policy like yourself.

At least I have the legacy of hedging Shannons' quote against Pharmacy Guild Insurance (who's quote 6 months ago is still valid at $1650 pa I think it was).

I agree with many people here that more competition is needed for us to get a better deal.

I'm now with Shannons for my 33R, initial quote was 35k ageed/2700 premium.

under 30 and postcode mainly. no fines etc.

friend of a friend knew someone and suddenly the quote turned into 40k agreed/1700

So try and find someone that works there is all i have to say.

the fact i had 1k difference just by talking to someone was rather ridiculous and shows they rip the average punter.

i know an assessor so i'll have a chat with him about it

just did a online quote with just cars & it was $1900 - much better!

what is 'nom de plum'?

btw - nothing has changed as the postcode is the same BUT the premium is double with shannons

I just took up cover with them last month;

$576 per annum lay up cover until car is registered then

$1300 once car is registered (they say quote valid until September 2011)

Insured value $30K for ADM 32GTR.

Its pretty unreasonable what they are quoting you Marko given over 30 etc??

it is unfair & i will be moving to just cars after being with shannons for over 6yrs.

i lost my licence in 06 which all of u sudden affects my insurance as shannons look at 5yrs history, whereas just cars go back 3yrs

1 claim this year for an accident - just cars dont care about this accident as it didnt affect the online quote (i tried with and without the claim & the premium didnt change)

anyway - not to worry

was it an at fault claim?

if so - that has affected your premium

yes my fault which dropped my no claim bonus from 65% to 55%

more than double premium though, am i missing something here?

they obviously dont want my business & im ok with it - f**k them!

what is 'nom de plum'?

It's simply a 'Pen-Name' equivalent to an 'alter ego' or an alias

Hmm, yes, I guess we all have to understand the consequences of

* speeding fines

* at fault accidents

* living in a risky postcode

* accidents which aren't even your fault, but you can't identify the jerk who dented your panel or scratched your paint

* act of God like a hailstorm...

driving up the premiums.

Damn those actuaries > policymakers. No respect for loyalty I guess...

100% the accident is what has changed your premium. people often go on about the fact of no claim bonus protection etc but what they forget is any claim with change how they calculate your premium so sure the NCB only drops one tier (or none at all if you have full NCB protection) but that means little when your base premium will get massively increased.

that's what's happened to you. you've had an at fault claim and they've re-assessed your premium. it's a bit rough but quite normal. if you can however get a better deal elsewhere then go for it. but most places will factor in an at fault claim in the last 12 months if you tell them about it (which you 100% should do).

Also try Lumley Special Vehicles underwritten by Westfarmers, i switched to them from Shannons.

LSV do not insure Imports anymore - i called them a couple weeks ago as my GTS-R was insured with them as a classic (as it was virtually 25yrs old they allowed it).

But R33 GTR, no go from the outset

yes - they only insure classics

ive had insurance with just car for over 6 years and i just upgraded from a 180sx ($12000) with a premium of about $900

and now i have a R34 4 door which owes around 35k but they will only insure for 19k and a premium of only 1100

and they wont do an agreed value, its crap. im worried that shannons is going to want over 1500 a year too =\

thieves!

    • Hi GTSBoy, Excuse my ignorance but what does a "Bad" Knee point mean ?
    • HFM BM57 has a "bad" knee point, IIRC. It's not the same thing as the later R chassis MC.
    • The ATTESSA is functionally identical to R34; there were a bunch of JDM models that continued ATTESSA including Fuga/Q70, Skyline/Q50, Cima etc as an option. All with Auto only and I think mostly for snow regions. AFAIK there were no AWD VR30DDTT sold in Australia - it is on my to do list to check regs for racing a LHD car in Targa/ATR/AASA/CAMS events because if I can get the auto to work it would be interesting to run a 4wd car The Ecuteck TCM tuning is the same model as their ECU tuning, they already have it for R35 and Dose's favourite, BMW. You buy "points" to allow your computer to be tuned, buy either a bluetooth (phone app) or bluetooth+USB+Key (phone and PC) dongle, and pay for a tune that will be locked to your tuner ( ). You can also access the tuning software yourself but 1. it is mega expensive and 2. these computers have a billion parameters that intersect, so how could you ever spend enough time on it to get a decent result.
    • Or, is it a case of what it is like owning an R series Skyline? NFI what the previous owner has done or fiddled with... Ha ha ha After reading through this thread, I went on a bit of a research about the Q50/Q60. Now I'm quite intrigued by them! Is the AWD in them more like a WRX where it's always AWD, or is it more like the ATTESSA in the GTRs? By the sound of this TCU tuning, this sounds like a case of someone has made some real software for it, and you just need the right piece of hardware, and then you license that specific vehicle/TCU. Or is this a case of the software will be really expensive so only a few tuners have it, and you still have to pay a license per vehicle?
    • By popular demand.. it was a coil. Got my hands on 1 new OEM coil, replaced with the one that made the less noise difference when I unplugged it while the car was running and started the car up. No stutter and the engine light was gone. I guess I’ll buy the other 5 they have lol
